U.S. Highway 66 was always different from other roads. During the decades it served American travelers, Route 66 became the subject of a world-famous novel, an Oscar-winning film, a hit song, and a long running television program. The 2,000 mile concrete slab also became a seven-year obsession for Susan Croce Kelly and Quinta Scott. They traveled Route 66, photographing buildings, knocking on doors, and interviewing the people who had built the buildings and run the businesses along the highway. Drawing on the oral tradition of those rural Americans who populated the edge of old Route 66, Scott and Kelly have pieced together the story of a highway that was conceived in Tulsa, Oklahoma; linked Chicago to Los Angeles; and played a role in the great social changes of the early twentieth century. Using the words of the people themselves and documents they left behind, Kelly describes the life changes of Route 66 from the dirt-and-gravel days until the time when new technology and different life-styles decreed that it be abandoned to the small towns it had nurtured over the course of thirty years. Scott's photographic essay shows the faces of those 66 people and gives a feeling of what can be seen along the old highway today, from the seminal highway architecture to the grainfields of the Illinois prairie, the windbent trees of western Oklahoma, the emptiness of New Mexico, and the bustling pier where the highway ends on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Route 66 uses oral history and photography as the basis for a human study of this country's most famous road. Historic times, dates, places, and events are described in the words of men and women who were there: driving the highway, cooking hamburgers, creating pottery, and pumping gas. As much as the concrete, gravel, and tar spread in a sweeping arc from Chicago to Santa Monica, those people are Route 66. Their stories and portraits are the biography of the highway.

Each provides an introduction to a different kind of literature within the Bible and follows with questions for discussion and five days of daily readings. The material is ideal for group use and the plan is to publish both single copies and a discounted pack of five. A separate supporting DVD will be produced by Elevation.

This book is a souvenir photo book, of Route 66, from Seligman to Topock, Arizona. It is one of the longest, continuous stretches of Route 66. There are 42 photos in the book showing some of my favorite places. While I was gathering photos along my favorite highway, I noticed, no one has done a photo book for just our area. I have lived on or near Route 66 most of my life, so I decided to have a little fun and make a souvenir that I hope everyone will enjoy.

Growing up on Route 66 is so connected with people and their lives I felt the need to write about the subject. When we think about the old route I suspect most of us think about a person or persons. Maybe someone along the highway that you met on a road trip, a gas station attendant or maybe someone that helped you after a break down on the old road. Or, in my case, a relative that influenced my life as a young person.

From the rise of the automobile in the United States until the 1960s, Route 66 was the byway of choice for cross-country travel. Connecting Chicago and Los Angeles, the "Mother Road" was not only filled with vacationers and travelers, it was also lined with businesses that offered these pioneering motorists a variety of services. This nostalgic, illustrated guide presents the stories of people who lived along Route 66, traveled it, and made their living there over the course of five decades. Along with stories of Route 66 travels, the book examines the entire range of Route 66 vocations: gas, food, and lodging; museums; souvenir shops; law enforcement; wrecker operators; and more. Fans of this American icon will enjoy the tales of the folks who made the road a legend, as well as the hundreds of period and modern color photographs which illustrate their stories.

The highway was not finished being laid with tarmac until 1938.
