A "Foreword" That's Really ... A "Backward"!!! Golf, as virtually anyone who has ever played it knows, is a very difficult game to master...unless the mailbox in front of your home happens to carry the name Palmer, Nicklaus or Woods. But if your mailbox happens to have the name "Spagnolo" on it, well now that's a whole different story altogether, because that name...mine...is now synonymous with and will forever be associated into eternity with bad golf. If you should happen to walk just a little further into my yard, you'll eventually come upon my doorstep. It is here where you will find the responsibility for my name being forever ruined in golf circles heaped up in a huge pile at my front door...yes it was completely my fault. There's no one else to blame in this instance. In fact, it was so bad back in 1985 that it wouldn't be inaccurate to conjecture that on that fateful day, June 19th, 1985, that I took the entire game of golf on my shoulders and literally dragged it backwards 528 years, all the way to back to 1457 when the first 18 hole rounds began being played in Scotland. You see, no one had ever played this game that we all love so badly before or since and probably never will. Today, that count is now up to 555 years! What I am going to endeavor to accomplish with this book is to try to explain how I came to be invited to this "prestigious" event in the first place; to describe my athletic prowess in other sports; the media madness that preceded the event and most importantly, the 28 years' worth of incredible, true events that have subsequently followed. The scores that day were mind-boggling (838 strokes taken by four players during one 18 hole match) so I obviously wasn't the only "world class player" in attendance that day. However, while in many respects my complete golfing inability can be viewed by "score-driven" players as being a "pathetic" thing, regardless of my many failings on the links, I have nevertheless always loved playing this game. So enjoy the ride! But for you golf bluebloods and scratch players out there, do yourself a favor: Be in your favorite chair, clear your head of all superfluous thoughts, have a good glass of scotch...or two...oh what the heck, have the whole bottle there...and have a quality box of cigars out of your humidor. You'll need all of these tools in place and ready before you begin reading because this true story really is a mental hazard that can be as tough as it gets and will truly boggle your mind. As I'm sure you can understand, I cannot be held personally responsible for those who fail to heed these necessary safety precautions!!! Sincerely yours in bad golf, Angelo Spagnolo "66" "America's Worst Avid Golfer"

Marrakech is Southern California's newest premier country club and promises a lifetime of privileged membership for those who have reached the pinnacle of financial and social acceptance. Four golfing friends-Wolfgang Martini, Donald Diedrich, Mark Huntington, and Richard Nelson-decide to join. But they soon discover that the membership also includes con men, lechers, Mafiosi, and at least one murderer. After they become members, all four men suddenly take on roles that threaten their friendship. Martini becomes the leader of the Founding Members who are embroiled in a divisive feud with the Regular members. Nelson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who sarcastically documents Marrakech's hedonism. Diedrich takes on the dual role as the club's Don Juan and proponent for the Juanenos Indian tribe, who claim the club has usurped their land, which they need for casino development. But it's mysterious Mark Huntington who raises suspicions-he's either a government agent or a hit man. When the bodies of members start to pile up, it's anybody's guess who is responsible. Is it a member of the Mafia, someone from the Indian tribe, or one of the friends themselves?

Unplayably lies is a tale of lives, a game, laughter and joy, self-discovery, companionship and connection, vulnerability, half-truths, sadness, deception, and control. A real-life story about real people and the choices they make when love meets fear.

In Unplayable Lies, Dan Jenkins takes us on a tour of the links as only he can do it. Here, Dan delves into the greatest rounds of golf he's ever seen, the funniest things said on a golf course, the rivalries on tour and in the press box, the game's most magical moments--and its most absurd. Filled with well-known characters like Tiger Woods, to others like Titanic Thompson--gambler, golf hustler, accused murderer, legendary storyteller--Unplayable Lies is an ode to the game of golf and the people who play it. But it is Dan Jenkins, so nothing--even the game itself--can escape his wrath, his critical eye, or his acerbic pen. This is Dan Jenkins at his best, writing about the sport he loves the most.

When Eddie Bennett began playing golf as a way to bond with his father, he quickly displayed a rare talent for the game. After a long and at times tragic road to the PGA Tour, all of the hard work appears to have paid off when it seemed as if Eddie would be a sure candidate for Rookie of the Year. Then Eddie sees something he should not have seen on the back nine of the Congressional Country Club. During a practice round for his first U.S. Open, he witnesses a murder. The killer is the man who will probably be the next President of the United States. He quickly understands his golfing career is ruined, but that is not all. The event forces Eddie underground while he tries to prove what he saw in a bid to get his life back. Eddie begins living a life a world apart from the pampered life on tour. He puts his trust in Atlanta attorney, Bryce Ballyntine, who helps him investigate the murder. Through his connection with Ballyntine, Eddie meets Mug, a terribly ugly but brilliant African-American with a criminal past and a talent for creating new identities. Armed with new credentials, Eddie flees to Mexico where he becomes friends with a golf hustler named Al and his gay partner, Manolo. As it turns out, Manolo has a past connection to the man who is now President. After the administration discovers Eddie in Mexico, he is forced to bolt again. In Belize, Eddie hooks up with Becky, a sexy but flighty scuba instructor. In the Dominican Republic, Eddie again risks exposure when he meets Sister Theresa, a nun who knew him in his past life. Unplayable Lie is much more than a novel about golf and the lessons the game can teach us. It is about coming of age, about attaining goals, and about dealing with the tragedies of life. It is about how the invisible hands of parents' guide us through life, long after they are gone. It is about trust and friendship, and love.

One of the most gifted athletes in the world, Babe Didrikson Zaharias dominated track and field, winning two Olympic gold medals in 1932. She went on to compete in baseball, bowling, basketball, tennis, and particularly in golf. The American public was smitten with her wit, frankness, and "unladylike" bravado. She became an American legend. The legend was challenged, however, by members of the press and society who insinuated that her femininity, even her femaleness, were suspect--that there was something different, even wrong, about this preternaturally gifted woman in a male-dominated world. She had ably used her androgyny and her powerful athleticism to promote herself, but she soon felt compelled to craft herself into a more marketable female role model--particularly in connection with the "proper" world of golf. To increase her opportunities for competitive play in this field, she became a co-founder and officer of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). As a major step in her makeover, Babe already had married George Zaharias, a wrestling promoter who was a vital partner in her constant efforts at self-promotion. But by 1950 Babe was deeply involved with a young golfer, Betty Dodd, whose for-the-record discussion of their remarkable love is included in Babe. Stricken with cancer in her prime, Babe went on to courageously and publicly fight the disease. Babe is a comprehensive, in-depth biography of a woman who was a great athlete at a time when it was extremely difficult for a woman to be her own person. Through interviews with members of Babe's family, her golf peers, and medical personnel, Cayleff caringly reveals the life and probes the legend of this unusual American hero. She unflinchingly examines the athletic community, the media, and the society that both loved and judged Babe, whose story embodies the struggle of all women who dare to transcend stereotypes and claim their own definitions and unique identities. Babe allows her to be all the hero--and all the human being--she was meant to be.

The Kid written by Ben Bradlee Jr. and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

From acclaimed journalist Ben Bradlee Jr. comes the epic biography of Boston Red Sox legend Ted Williams that baseball fans have been waiting for. Williams was the best hitter in baseball history. His batting average of .406 in 1941 has not been topped since, and no player who has hit more than 500 home runs has a higher career batting average. Those totals would have been even higher if Williams had not left baseball for nearly five years in the prime of his career to serve as a Marine pilot in WWII and Korea. He hit home runs farther than any player before him -- and traveled a long way himself, as Ben Bradlee, Jr.'s grand biography reveals. Born in 1918 in San Diego, Ted would spend most of his life disguising his Mexican heritage. During his 22 years with the Boston Red Sox, Williams electrified crowds across America -- and shocked them, too: His notorious clashes with the press and fans threatened his reputation. Yet while he was a God in the batter's box, he was profoundly human once he stepped away from the plate. His ferocity came to define his troubled domestic life. While baseball might have been straightforward for Ted Williams, life was not. The Kid is biography of the highest literary order, a thrilling and honest account of a legend in all his glory and human complexity. In his final at-bat, Williams hit a home run. Bradlee's marvelous book clears the fences, too.
