Excerpt from Life Sketches of Lutheran Ministers: North Carolina and Tennessee Synods, 1773-1965 Arriving in America in 1773, when events were moving toward war with England, Nussmann found himself entirely on his own. He could get no further help from his London friends. Moreover, Since the dynasty of George III had come to England from Hanover, he was cut off from the German support that he had expected. Dur ing his first fourteen years in the new world, he sought and found priestly fellow ship With the Rev. Frederick Daser Of Charlestown. Nussmann started his work in North Carolina more than a year before the First Continental Congress met and three years before Independence was declared. The fact that he had already learned to do his own thinking is evident by his giving up Catholicism for the Lutheran faith. Because he actively supported the American Patriots, he suffered physical torture from savage Tories. There were times when he had to hide to save his life. When conditions worsened in the southern states, hefeared that he would have to give up his North Carolina mission. He maintained correspondence with Henry Melchior Muhlenberg of Pennsylvania, the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. Muhlenberg recorded in his diary that a letter from Pastor Adolph Nussmann revealed that he was eager to serve the Lord - but does - not know where - even if it were the end of the world. Muhlenberg further recorded that the Whigs in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia were in a terrible manner being tortured and killed by the Britons, Tories, and Indians. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1922 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX. As the self-sacrificing labors performed and the marked distinction won by the several ministers who served Rader's Lutheran Church so interlap in its History, the incorporation of sketches of their lives in its pages is deemed appropriate. Few country congregations have enrolled so many ministers who have attained such eminent reputations. The biographies were prepared by the writers whose names are attached to the sketches except those transferred from the History of the Tennessee Synod, and in the main the photographs are striking likenesses of the pastors whose biographies are illustrated. PAUL HENKEL. 1754--1825. Paul Henkel was born December 15, 1754, near Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina. His parents were Jacob Henkel and Barbara Dieter, whose parents had come from Wurttemberg, Germany. Molested by the Indians, Paul Henkel's parents and other relatives in 1760 traveled under great hardship northward, and settled first in Loudoun County, Virginia, then crossed the Potomac into Maryland, thence traveled westward for safety, and recrossed the Potomac River into Hampshire County, and a year later, continued their journey southward into Hardy County. Life in these stockades was like living in a prison, yet Paul Henkel owes his early knowledge of German and English to the fortunate presence of teachers found in them. Other Lutherans had come from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, to these two counties. In course of a few years the faithful pastor of Hebron Church in Madison County, Rev. John Schwarbach, visited the neighborhood, gathered the Lutherans into congregations, and built...
