In recent years, remarkable discoveries have been made concerning the underlying mechanisms of aging. In Life-Span Extension: Single-Cell Organisms to Man, the editors bring together a range of illuminating perspectives from researchers investigating the aging process in a variety of species. This novel work addresses the aging process in species ranging from yeast to man and, among other subjects, features detailed discussions of the naked mole-rat, an exceptionally long-lived rodent; the relationship between dietary factors/food restriction and aging; and an evolutionary view of the human aging process. Single mutations that extend life span have been identified in yeast, worms, flies, and mice, whereas studies in humans have identified potentially important markers for successful aging. At the same time, it has been discovered that the genes and pathways identified in these studies involve a surprisingly small set of conserved functions, most of which have been the focus of aging research for some time. For example, the mTOR pathway, a regulator of translation and protein synthesis, has been identified as a common longevity pathway in yeast and Caenorhabditis elegans. In mammals, this pathway intersects with neuroendocrine pathways and with the insulin/insulin-like growth factor pathways, which have been identified as major modulators of life span and aging in both invertebrates and mice. Novel, emerging technologies and the increasingly wide variety of systems that are now used to study aging and the mechanisms of aging provide enormous opportunities for the identification of common pathways that modulate longevity. It is these common pathways that are the focus of this important volume.

What Is Life Extension The idea of life extension refers to the process of prolonging the human lifetime, either subtly via advancements in medical technology or drastically by raising the maximum lifespan beyond the usually accepted limit of 125 years. Life extension may be achieved in any of these two ways: How You Will Benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Life extension Chapter 2: Senescence Chapter 3: Longevity Chapter 4: Maximum life span Chapter 5: Low-protein diet Chapter 6: Free-radical theory of aging Chapter 7: Caloric restriction mimetic Chapter 8: Daf-2 Chapter 9: Biological immortality Chapter 10: Calorie restriction Chapter 11: CRON-diet Chapter 12: Evolution of ageing Chapter 13: Index of topics related to life extension Chapter 14: Outline of life extension Chapter 15: Ageing Chapter 16: Clive McCay Chapter 17: Anti-aging movement Chapter 18: Genetics of aging Chapter 19: Disposable soma theory of aging Chapter 20: Hallmarks of aging Chapter 21: Timeline of senescence research (II) Answering the public top questions about life extension. (III) Real world examples for the usage of life extension in many fields. (IV) 17 appendices to explain, briefly, 266 emerging technologies in each industry to have 360-degree full understanding of life extension' technologies. Who This Book Is For Professionals, undergraduate and graduate students, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and those who want to go beyond basic knowledge or information for any kind of life extension.

Aging is a treatable condition! For more than a century aging and a particular lifespan have been widely thought to be an inescapable and fundamental aspect of human existence. Indeed, Darwin's evolution theory tells us that the force of evolution is toward defeating aging, leading to the idea that aging is the result of unalterable laws of physics or chemistry. We can find different treatments for different age-related diseases like cancer and heart disease but aging is itself an untreatable fact of life. Today it is increasingly clear that aging is actually the result of complex biological programs that purposely limit lifespan in humans and most animals because this created an evolutionary advantage for populations of wild animals including our prehistoric ancestors. Programmed aging and supporting evolutionary concepts are a logical consequence of relatively recent discoveries in genetics as well as observations regarding the aging and lifespan characteristics of many different organisms. As a consequence, we can increase healthy human lifespan by interfering with the aging program. Interfering with a biological process is a familiar problem in medicine, and research toward developing treatments based on this idea are underway. Goldsmith describes the 160-year history of still-unresolved scientific arguments over the evolutionary nature of aging, the increasing empirical evidence of aging programs, and the exciting prospects for lifespan extension and healthy living. More practically, the book describes: Key observations about the nature of aging. Orally administered substances known to increase longevity in mice. Why exercise increases longevity. Anti-aging medicine issues with existing health care systems. Social, educational, ethical, and economic issues with extending lifespan. How lifespan extension concepts add to our ability to devise treatments for age-related diseases. Contents 1. Introduction 2. Nature of Aging and Lifespan 3. Evolution Theory and Aging 4. Longevity written by James R. Carey and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-03-02 with Family & Relationships categories.

Despite our deep interest in mortality, little is known about why some individuals live to middle age and others to extreme old age. Life span, mortality, and aging present some of the most profound mysteries in biology. In Longevity, James Carey draws on unprecedented data to develop a biological and demographic framework for identifying the key factors that govern aging, life span, and mortality in humans and other animals. Carey presents the results of a monumental, twelve-year, National Institute on Aging-funded research project on the determinants of longevity using data from the life tables of five million Mediterranean fruit flies, the most comprehensive set of life table studies ever on the mortality dynamics of a single species. He interprets the fruit fly data within the context of human aging and the aging process in general to identify the determinants of mortality. Three key themes emerge: the absence of species-specific life span limits, the context-specific nature of the mortality rate, and biodemographic linkages between longevity and reproduction. A powerful foundation for the emerging field of biodemography and a rich framework for considering the future of human life span, Longevity will be an indispensable resource for readers from a range of fields including population biology, demography, gerontology, ecology, evolutionary biology, and medical research.

You may think that aging is an unstoppable force - but there are brakes to slow its progress. Since 1900, average life expectancy around the globe has more than doubled, thanks to better public health, sanitation, and food supplies. But a new study of long-lived Italians and Japanese indicates that we have yet to reach the upper bound of human longevity.Human life expectancy is on the rise. Whereas the average person born in 1960 could expect to live to 55 years of age, someone born today has an average life expectancy between 79 and 83 years of age. The question many of us ask is: how far can we push the boundaries of our human lifespan? Scientists are still studying this question...
