Life To Those Shadows written by Noël Burch and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-11-21 with Performing Arts categories.

Noel Burch's new book is a critique of the assumptions underlying 'classical' approaches to film history: the assumption that what we call the language of film was a natural, organic development, that it lay latent from the outset in the basic technology of the camera, waiting for the prescient pioneers to bring it into being; and the assumption that this language was a universal, neutral medium, innocent of any social or historical meaning in itself." "His major thesis is that, on the contrary, film language has a social and economic history, that it evolved in the way it did because of when and where it was constructed -- in the capitalist and imperialist west between 1892 and 1929." "The book examines the chronology of the emergence of what it defines as cinema's Institutional Mode of Representation and the socio-historical circumstances in which this took place. It examines the principles of visualisation -- camera placement and movement, lighting, editing, mise-en-scene -- that film-makers and audiences came to internalize over the first three decades. Special emphasis is laid on the allimportant change that occurred in the imaginary placing of the spectator, from a position of exteriority to the film image, implicit in both film-form and viewing conditions during the primitive era (pre-1909), to the imaginary centering of the spectator-subject, completed only with the generalisation of lip-synch sound after 1929. It is the contention of this book that this imaginary centering of a sensorily isolated spectator is the keystone of the cinematic illusion of reality, still achieved today by the same means as it was sixty years ago.

Noel Burch's singularly perceptive view of film and its origins will interest all who care about film theory and history. "Life to Those Shadows" presents a critique of "classical" approaches to film: the assumptions that what we call the language of film was a natural, organic development, and that it lay latent from the outset in the basic technology of the camera, waiting for the prescient pioneers to bring it into being. The view that film language was a universal, neutral medium, innocent of any social or historical meaning in itself, is also challenged here. Burch's major thesis is that, on the contrary, film language has a social and economic history, that it evolved in the way it did because of when and where it was constructed--in the capitalist and imperialist West between 1892 and 1929. From this perspective, the book examines the emergence of what it defines as cinema's Institutional Mode of Representation and the sociohistorical circumstances in which it took place. Central to the Institutional Mode are the principles of visualization--camera placement and movement, lighting, editing, mise-en-scene--that filmmakers and audiences came to internalize over the first three decades. Special emphasis is laid on the all-important change that occurred in the placing of the spectator, from a position of exteriority to the film image--implicit in both film-form and viewing conditions during the primitive era (pre-1909)--to the imaginary centering of the spectator-subject--completed only with the generalization of lip-synch sound after 1929. Burch contends that this imaginary centering of a sensorially isolated spectator is the keystone of the cinematic illusion of reality, still achieved today by the same means as it was sixty years ago.

Out Of The Shadows written by Walt Odets and has been published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-04 with Social Science categories.

A moving exploration of how gay men construct their identities, fight to be themselves, and live authentically It goes without saying that even today, it’s not easy to be gay in America. While young gay men often come out more readily, even those from the most progressive of backgrounds still struggle with the legacy of early-life stigma and a deficit of self-acceptance, which can fuel doubt, regret, and, at worst, self-loathing. And this is to say nothing of the ongoing trauma wrought by AIDS, which is all too often relegated to history. Drawing on his work as a clinical psychologist during and in the aftermath of the epidemic, Walt Odets reflects on what it means to survive and figure out a way to live in a new, uncompromising future, both for the men who endured the upheaval of those years and for the younger men who have come of age since then, at a time when an HIV epidemic is still ravaging the gay community, especially among the most marginalized. Through moving stories—of friends and patients, and his own—Odets considers how experiences early in life launch men on trajectories aimed at futures that are not authentically theirs. He writes to help reconstruct how we think about gay life by considering everything from the misleading idea of “the homosexual,” to the diversity and richness of gay relationships, to the historical role of stigma and shame and the significance of youth and of aging. Crawling out from under the trauma of destructive early-life experience and the two epidemics, and into a century of shifting social values, provides an opportunity to explore possibilities rather than live with limitations imposed by others. Though it is drawn from decades of private practice, activism, and life in the gay community, Odets’s work achieves remarkable universality. At its core, Out of the Shadows is driven by his belief that it is time that we act based on who we are and not who others are or who they would want us to be. We—particularly the young—must construct our own paths through life. Out of the Shadows is a necessary, impassioned argument for how and why we must all take hold of our futures.

The Meaning Is In The Shadows written by Peter McVerry and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Religion categories.

In 1974, as a newly ordained priest, Fr Peter McVerry SJ chose to live and work in the Inner City with a small group of other Jesuits. He began working with young people who had dropped out of school, were involved in crime, living in dysfunctional families and on a straight road to prison. To a young priest from a middle class background, the experience was a complete culture shock. It challenged his attitudes, revealed to himself his prejudices, opened his eyes to what is happening in our very divided society and called into question his understanding of God. A ministry intended to last a few years became a life-long commitment. This book contains his reflections on these experiences. He reflects critically on the structures and systems in our society which push people to the margins and ensure that they remain there. Issues affecting prisoners, school drop-outs, drug users and homeless people are discussed in a way that challenges and provokes. He also questions the structures which affect the lives of those on the margins and makes specific suggestions for change.

In this paranormal trilogy, witness the collision of good and evil between the beings that live just on the other side of the threshold inside the haunted Bradford mansion… EDGE OF SHADOWS (Shadows #1) Orphaned at eight years old, Ellie developed an ability to help her navigate the cold, indifferent world where she found herself. Armed with the knowledge of a person’s true intentions, she learned it was safer to be alone. Then Jake Coulter slipped through her defenses by offering the promise of a normal, happy life. After narrowly escaping a dark truth that Jake hid from her, Ellie retreated from the world in an act of self-preservation. Drawn out of her protective bubble when a friend insists on playing matchmaker, Ellie meets a handsome doctor. With some persistent coaxing, Ellie warms to the idea that she may have found a reason to let her guard down. She rediscovers her hope for an ordinary, yet extraordinary life. Accepting a seemingly innocent favor, Ellie finds herself the caretaker of the Bradford mansion, an impressive home with its own mysterious past. Curious about a life that she could never have, she delves into the mansion’s history. Soon Ellie realizes that danger lurks in its empty rooms. When Jake resurfaces with premonitions of Ellie's death, Ellie's new life is turned upside down as a simple truth is revealed. Ellie’s life can never be normal because something old and evil has been searching for her for a long time. And now it has found her. SHADOWS DEEP (Shadows #2) Ellie Coulter made a deal with the devil to save herself and her new love, and now it's time to pay the price. It doesn't take long for Ellie to realize that the shadows that have swirled around her life since her parents' death were far from a coincidence. As more of her true destiny is revealed, it comes with the knowledge that she is a lynchpin in a much larger and more dangerous game. Mikel, Hell’s emissary to her new “home” in the Afterlife has her trapped and he has no intention of ever letting her go. As Ellie races to find a way to escape, she is sucked further into the darkness and must come face to face with ugly truths about who she really is. She has to decide who she can trust and that includes the man she loves. As facts give way to lies, Ellie begins to question everything. But one thing remains clear: Ellie must find a way to defeat her captor before she loses everything, including her soul. VEILED SHADOWS (Shadows #3) In the stunning conclusion of the Shadows trilogy, Ellie and David risk everything to uncover the truth about their pasts... Ellie Coulter is sick of being the victim of the shadows surrounding her new life. She's ready to find out the secret that her parents kept from her and what that means for her future, even if it means partnering with the one man that she thought she'd never see again. David Mitchell is grappling with the sobering truth that his life has been nothing but a sham since the day he was born. Although he loves Ellie, he knows that being near him puts her life in danger. The day his fate was changed caused horrible consequences that he must find a way to fix. Fates intertwine, and all is revealed as Ellie and David find out if they were truly meant to be together or if the darkness will swallow them whole. In the UK the number of people who came from a minority ethnic group grew by 53 per cent between 1991 and 2001, from 3.0 million in 1991 to 4.6 million in 2001. Whilst much has been written about the impact of these demographic changes in relation to policy issues, black and minority women and children remain under-researched. Recent publications have tended to focus on South Asian women, forced marriage and 'honour' related violence. Moving in the Shadows brings together for the first time in a single volume, an examination of violence against women and children within the diverse communities of the UK. Its strength lies in its gendered focus as well as its understanding of the need for an integrated approach to all forms of violence against women, whilst foregrounding the experiences of minority women, the communities they are part of, and the organizations which have advocated for their rights and given them voice. The chapters contained within this volume explore a set of core themes: the forms and contexts of violence minority women experience; the continuum of violence; the role of culture and faith in the control of women and girls; the types of intervention within multi-cultural and social cohesion policies; the impacts of violence on British-born and migrant women and girls; and the intersection of race, class, gender and sexuality highlighting issues of similarity and difference. Taken together, they provide a valuable resource for scholars, students, activists, social workers and policy-makers working in the field.
