In "A Reply to Dr. Lightfoot's Essays," Walter Richard Cassels embarks on a rigorous critique of the theological arguments presented by Dr. Joseph Lightfoot, particularly concerning the authorship of the New Testament and the concept of supernaturalism in Christianity. Cassels employs a meticulous and analytical literary style, characterized by clear exposition and logical reasoning, as he challenges prevailing orthodox views. The text is situated within the broader context of the late 19th-century biblical criticism, a period marked by the questioning of traditional beliefs and a push towards a more historical understanding of religious texts. Walter Richard Cassels was a prominent figure in the realm of theological debate during his time, known for his radical views on religion and his commitment to the scholarship of biblical texts. His earlier work, "Supernatural Religion," had already established him as a critical voice against supernatural explanations, and in this reply, he seeks to extend his arguments, engaging directly with the luminary figure of Lightfoot. Cassels'Äô academic background and his immersion in contemporary theological discourse undoubtedly influenced his perspective, allowing him to articulate a compelling response to opposing sentiments. This book is highly recommended for scholars, theologians, and anyone interested in the interplay between faith and reason. Cassels' thoughtful examination not only illuminates the specifics of Lightfoot'Äôs arguments but also invites readers to critically reflect on their own beliefs regarding the foundations of Christianity. It is a vital contribution to understanding the complexities surrounding biblical authorship and the nature of religious belief.

What has by convention been called 'John Lightfoot's journal' is in fact a four-volume series of journals, the first of which has never been published. The journals are presented here in their entirety for the first time. John Lightfoot's journals cover a period in the author's life when he was a member of the famous 'assembly of divines' meeting in Westminster Abbey. The Westminster assembly (1643-1653) was comprised of approximately thirty members of parliament and 120 ministers. By the outbreak of the war in England in 1642, a majority in the Long Parliament had come to see it as its duty to renovate the Church of England, both bringing it into line with a more biblical code and up to date with the best Reformed Churches. Lightfoot's personal diary is of critical importance to assembly history because his meticulous little volumes supply the only account of the assembly's activities for sessions 1-44, and the only fulsome account for sessions 120-154, where the assembly's own minutes are missing. For the sessions where the assembly's minutes are extant, Lightfoot offers another set of eyes, often supplying additional information and a perspective differing from the assembly's own scribe. These sessions record the gathering's opening ceremonies, surprising fractious debates over the Thirty-nine Articles, and predictably heated conflicts between Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and Congregationalists over church governance. Lightfoot describes riots outside parliament, names meeting places for MPs and assembly members in London, and attempts to explain assembly dynamics in a way that The Minutes and Papers of the assembly do not. The four-volume journal ends abruptly after eighteen months, in December 1644. The body of this volume contains the full text of Lightfoot's surviving journals, accompanied by interpretive introductions for each session and editorial notation throughout. The introduction sets in context the author's life prior to and during the Westminster assembly and discusses the careful composition, potential audience, and checkered transmission of the journals.

Catherine Slaney grew into womanhood unaware of her celebrated Black ancestors. An unanticipated meeting was to change her life. Her great-grandfather was Dr. Anderson Abbott, the first Canadian-born Black to graduate from medical school in Toronto in 1861. In Family Secrets Catherine Slaney narrates her journey along the trail of her family tree, back through the era of slavery and the plight of fugitive slaves, the Civil War, the Elgin settlement near Chatham, Ontario, and the Chicago years. Why did some of her family identify with the Black Community while others did not? What role did "passing" play? Personal anecdotes and excerpts from archival Abbott family papers enliven the historical context of this compelling account of a family dealing with an unknown past. A welcome addition to African-Canadian history, this moving and uplifting story demonstrates that understanding one’s identity requires first the embracing of the past. "When Catherine Slaney first consulted me, her intention was to research the life of her distinguished ancestor Anderson R. Abbott. After she told me her story of the discovery of her African heritage and the search for her roots, I urged her to make that the subject of her book. Cathy has served both of these objectives, giving us an intricate and fascinating account of her quest for her own lost identity through the gradual illumination of Dr. Abbott and his legacy for modern Canadians. Family Secrets carries an important message about the issue of ’race’ as a historical artifact and as a factor in the lives of real people." – James W. St. G. Walker, University of Waterloo "This is a welcome addition to the growing collection of African-Canadian materials that connects an unknown past to a promising future. That Slaney was unaware of her Black ancestry, despite that heritage being so rich and powerful, speaks to the dilemma of Black history research – it is there but requires considerable digging to uncover." – Rosemary Sadlier, President, Ontario Black History Society

It is a common view that the Westminster Assembly was dominated by Scots pursuing their nationalistic goals to the disadvantage of a desperate English Parliament. But in Covenanted Uniformity in Religion , Wayne R. Spear reassesses the Assembly from the standpoint of the Scottish commissioners and their influence in the drawing up of the Form of Church Government. Spear begins by placing the Assembly in its historical setting and giving an overview of how it conducted its business. Then, following the order of the Form of Church Government, he traces each significant expression from its origin in a committee, through its debate and modification in the Assembly, to its final placement in the document. Finally, Spear evaluates the significance of this document by considering the responses it received in England and Scotland. Here we see how the Scots failed to achieve some of their most cherished goals in the Assembly debates, which demonstrates that the Assembly operated as a truly deliberative body. This book gives us a more accurate picture of the Westminster Assembly as it debated the proper structure and function of the Christian church.
