A look back at vintage magazines and an invitation to enter the spellbinding world of luscious pin-up models. IMAGINED BY MALY SIRI, THIS COFFEE TABLE BOOK IS A REMINDER OF VINTAGE MAGAZINES AND AN INVITATION TO ENTER THE SPELLBINDING WORLD OF PIN-UPS Maly Siri’s Pin-up Art Good Girls / Bad Girls raises two themes: - On one side, the “Good Girls”: the damsels with soft skin powdering their faces in front of the mirror, the Tahitian girls with enchanting smiles and the brave soldiers... Their charm is due to their sparkling characters and apparent candour. - And on the other side, the “Bad Girls”: the rouged vamps with sensuous looks, the spies, the melancholic blues singers and other mis ts... The fact that they are aware of their charms makes them even more dangerous... This book is a rich and delicious homage inspired by the iconography of the 1930’s to 50’s, a concentrate of pure glamour, with a preface by Chantal Thomass.

The Natural Musician written by Dina Kirnarskaya and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-11 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

One of the great mysteries of music is how it affects us in multitude of ways. Whether talking about our individual tastes as listeners, or individual differences as performers, what are the psychological qualities that can turn some people into great musicians, but not others? Is it down to genes, sheer hard work, or some other quality in the individual? The Natural Musician is the story of how we become composers, performers, or just discriminating listeners. It searches for those psychological traits essential for turning one into a musician. Unlike many others, Kirnarskaya does believe in the existence of talent, but argues that it is due to multiplicative factors, which she describes, analyses, and shows how to test. She also sheds light on the essence and origins of perfect pitch, examines the triumphs and tortures of musical prodigies, and considers the implications of her theories for the teaching of music. After a foreword from the legendary conductor, Gennady Rodhestvensky, the book looks at our basic musical faculties - how we perceive sounds, distinguish their pitch and structure, and recognise rhythm. It then examines the nature of musical empathy - what it is that allows us to perceive and emotionally connect with music. The second part of the book focuses on the creative processes behind writing music. The third section deals with music education, looking at the role of innate and inherited characteristics in the formation of talent, and considering why many who excel at an early age, burn out later on. The book ends exploring how musical development can shape the human brain, strengthening other cognitive faculties, including those unrelated to music. This is a book that will fascinate anyone with an interest in music and musicians, from the fields of music psychology and education, to musicians themselves, whether amateur and professional.

The Hatred Of Music written by Pascal Quignard and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-28 with Music categories.

Throughout Pascal Quignard’s distinguished literary career, music has been a recurring obsession. As a musician he organized the International Festival of Baroque Opera and Theatre at Versailles in the early 1990s, and thus was instrumental in the rediscovery of much forgotten classical music. Yet in 1994 he abruptly renounced all musical activities. The Hatred of Music is Quignard’s masterful exploration of the power of music and what history reveals about the dangers it poses. From prehistoric chants to challenging contemporary compositions, Quignard reflects on music of all kinds and eras. He draws on vast cultural knowledge—the Bible, Greek mythology, early modern history, modern philosophy, the Holocaust, and more—to develop ten accessible treatises on music. In each of these small masterpieces the author exposes music’s potential to manipulate, to mesmerize, to domesticate. Especially disturbing is his scrutiny of the role music played in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Quignard’s provocative book takes on particular relevance today, as we find ourselves surrounded by music as never before in history.

The Son written by Michel Rostain and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-23 with Fiction categories.

Selected for the Waterstones Eleven list for 2013. We first meet Michel eleven days after the death of his son Lion. Lion was lost, suddenly, to a virulent strain of meningitis and it's left his father and entire family reeling. We join Michel on his personal journey through grief, but the twist that makes the journey truly remarkable, and tips this true story into fiction, is the fact that we see it all through Lion's eyes. In a stunningly original blurring of memoir and fiction, THE SON tackles the very hardest of subjects in the most readable of ways. Michel Rostain resolutely ducks away from sentimentality and pathos, and tells his story instead with wit, wisdom and vitality. For this is not a book about death; it's a book about life.

Join The Dots And Make A Point written by Gabriel Kuri and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Installations (Art) categories.

On the occasion of his first institutional exhibition in Germany, Gabriel Kuri (*1970, Mexico City) has created four new groups of works, which provide an insight into different aspects of his practice. Accordingly, Kuri is showing sculptures and installation; all of them are made out of found materials or industrially manufactured products, including marble slabs, sand, paper, cigarette butts, or body care products. A precise and deliberate positioning and a surprising casualness always characterize the presentation of his objects in the exhibition. With their humor and lightness of touch, his works level criticism as well as political, economic, and social conditions. In the sense of an extended notion of sculpture, he shifts the boundaries of art and the everyday, as the viewers and the everyday become part of the aesthetic form. Gabriel Kuri lives and works in Mexico City and Brussels. He has contributed to numerous international group exhibitions, such as the 5th Berlin Biennale (2008), "Brave New Worlds" at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2007), and "Unmonumental" at the New Museum, New York (2007). In addition to the Kunstverein Freiburg and Bielefelder Kunstverein, Museion - Museum of modern and contemporary art Bolzano and the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston will also display solo exhibitions of Kuri's works in 2010. This catalogue is published on the occasion of Gabriel Kuri's solo exhibition at Bielefelder Kunstverein and Kunstverein Freiburg. It is the first monograph on the artist to appear in Germany.

The Horror Genre written by Paul Wells and has been published by Wallflower Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Literary Criticism categories.

A comprehensive introduction to the history and key themes of the genre. The main issues and debates raised by horror, and the approaches and theories that have been applied to horror texts are all featured. In addressing the evolution of the horror film in social and historical context, Paul Wells explores how it has reflected and commented upon particular historical periods, and asks how it may respond to the new millennium by citing recent innovations in the genre's development, such as the "urban myth" narrative underpinning Candyman and The Blair Witch Project. Over 300 films are treated, all of which are featured in the filmography.
