Questo libro, pubblicato grazie al sostegno del World Monuments Fund, presenta il metodo di studio messo a punto tra il 2009 e il 2011 grazie ad una ricerca congiunta tra la Facoltà di Architettura dell'Università ‘Sapienza' di Roma e la FAUA - Facultad de Arquitectura, Urbanismo y Artes - della Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería di Lima, Perù, per il riconoscimento del patrimonio architettonico a rischio propedeutico agli interventi di recupero. La prima parte introduce alla storia della città e alla sua fondazione ad opera degli Spagnoli, non tralasciando di evidenziare, grazie al supporto di documenti inediti, percorsi e tracce più antichi, degni di tutela per essere trasmessi alle future generazioni. La seconda parte affronta le tematiche della conservazione del centro storico di Lima e, più in generale, le fondamenta teoriche e metodologiche per il restauro dei centri storici, seguite da una panoramica sui restauri realizzati a Lima negli ultimi novant'anni e dall'analisi del patrimonio in pericolo. La terza parte analizza le più diffuse tecniche costruttive locali e metodi di restauro ad esse compatibili, e si conclude con l'intervento di recupero operato sulla Casa de las Columnas e promosso dal World Monuments Fund. The center of Lima is a heritage of great historical and artistic value, currently in an advanced state of decay, threatened by speculative pressures and not protected by appropriate laws and regulations. This book, published with the support of World Monuments Fund, presents the approach developed in the joint research carried out in the year 2009-2011 by the Faculty of Architecture of Sapienza University of Rome, Italy and FAUA - Facultad de Arquitectura, Urbanismo y Artes - of National University of Engineering of Lima, Peru: the research focused on identifying and evaluating the endangered heritage preliminary to the rehabilitation process. Part one introduces the historic city since its foundation by the Spaniards, also identifying tracks and remains dating before the Spanish period, well worthy of protection for future generations, through the use of hitherto unpublished maps. The second part presents the conservation issues facing the historic center of Lima and, more generally, the theoretical and methodological tenets for the restoration of historic urban areas; followed by an overview of endangered heritage and significant rehabilitation works carried out in the city in the last ninety years. The third part analyzes the typical local construction techniques and some of the related methods of preservation, finally centering on the rehabilitation works of the Casa de las Columnas, supported by the World Monuments Fund. El casco antiguo de Lima es patrimonio histórico artístico de gran interés, y sin embargo se encuentra en precarias condiciones de conservación, amenazado por las presiones económicas y, por lo tanto, necesitado de una adecuada y firme acción de protección. Este libro, publicado gracias al apoyo del World Monuments Fund, presenta el método de estudio llevado a cabo entre 2009 y 2011 gracias a un estudio conjunto entre la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Università ‘Sapienza' di Roma y la FAUA - Facultad de Arquitectura, Urbanismo y Artes - de la Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería de Lima, Perú, cuyo objetivo es el reconocimiento del patrimonio arquitectónico en peligro previo a las intervenciones de recuperación. La primera parte presenta la historia de la ciudad y su fundación por parte de los españoles, resaltando, gracias a la ayuda de documentos inéditos, huellas y vestigios más antiguos, dignos de ser protegidos para que puedan transmitirse a las generaciones futuras. La segunda parte trata el tema de la conservación del centro histórico de Lima y, de manera más general, los fundamentos teóricos y metodológicos para la restauración de centros históricos, seguidos de un análisis de las restauraciones realizadas en Lima en los últimos noventa años así como del análisis del patrimonio en peligro. La tercera parte analiza las técnicas de construcción locales más difusas y los métodos de restauración compatibles, y se concluye con la intervención de recuperación realizada en la Casa de las Columnas, promovida por el World Monuments Fund.

Since 1970, based in an isolated building situated on the peninsula of Posillipo, Pica Ciamarra Associati (www.pcaint.eu) has acted as a laboratory of architectural and urban design which has gradually incorporated new members and new energies over the time: using a multidisciplinary approach, the roots of the architectural practice lie in the intensive theoretical and practical work begun in the early 1960s by Massimo Pica Ciamarra. Since then the practice has been marked by a continuous relationship with Le Carré Bleu Feuille internationale darchitecture and leading members of the cultural milieu of Team 10: this has led to constant attention to everything that lies beyond form, to the relation ship with contexts that also include non-spatial contexts, and to high levels of integration and dialectical discussion. According to Pica Ciamarra Associati, a design transcends the approaches of a single sector, providing simultaneous solutions to contradictory requirements, combining utopia and practicality. The poetics of the fragment: it mediates between architecture and the urban dimension; some designs also have the aim of becoming absorbed within a context as 'informed fragments'. This monograph is the result of an intensive period of work and consists of two interacting parts. It stems from research into the archive of the studio Pica Ciamarra and conversation with the members of the architectural practice. Organised diachronically, the book tells the long story, unfolding over a period of over fifty years of a team of Neapolitan architects and designers, who have maintained the lively spirit of the practice which is still geared towards the future. The textual and iconographic account tells a story and offers an interpretation that highlight the vibrant atmosphere of the studio, based on a consistency of thought and action, and fuelled by an interest in many different forms of knowledge. The contextualisation of the events related to the studio, as they unfolded over time, is wide-ranging, coherent and connotative. Antonietta Iolanda Lima, professor of history of architecture at the University of Palermo, has always tried, through theory, teaching and design, to disseminate the importance of history which can embracing innovation and tradition to an equal degree, forming a new architectural language. According to her view of architecture, history and design are closely connected, a 'single entity' as is reflected by her career. Since the 1980s, her academic work has gained increasing importance, a way of avoiding narrow sectoral approaches in the training of future architects, offering a holistic stance of the history of architecture and an architecture that contributes to shaping critical thought and a thriving cultural life.

This book describes tests performed on model adobe buildings to evaluate seismic damage mitigation techniques applicable to the retrofitting of historic and culturally significant adobe structures. Part of the Getty Seismic Adobe Project (GSAP), the three-year program outlined in this volume was designed to develop and test minimally invasive, inexpensive, and easily implemented methods of protecting such structures from severe earthquake damage. Small- and large-scale models were tested on computer-controlled shaking tables at Stanford University and at the IIZIS Earthquake Engineering Laboratory in the Republic of Macedonia, respectively. The authors identify typical failure modes of adobe structures and describe specific retrofit techniques to help minimize such failures. Extensive photographic documentation is included.
