This book analyses local politics in Limerick from 1898 to 1918, reaching back to the Parnellite split and forward to the post-independence era. It explores at local level the relevance of the commemoration of 1798, the reunification of the Irish Parliamentary Party, and the emergence of multiple cultural political movements as well as the demise of Unionism. The question posed is twofold: whether nationalist constitutional politics changed over this time period on the one hand, and whether they were driven by local or national concerns on the other. The conclusion is that the spirit of politics was intensely local, that political patronage was largely locally controlled, and that there were greater continuities than ruptures in the composition and behaviour of political elites. In fact, long-term continuities of personnel, social class and political allegiance existed side-by side with the ability of existing structures to absorb change and to adapt in the light of wider political developments and internal manoeuvres.

Southern Irish Loyalism 1912 1949 written by Brian Hughes and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-22 with History categories.

This book brings together new research on loyalism in the 26 counties that would become the Irish Free State. It covers a range of topics and experiences, including the Third Home Rule crisis in 1912, the revolutionary period, partition, independence and Irish participation in the British armed and colonial service up to the declaration of the Republic in 1949. The essays gathered here examine who southern Irish loyalists were, what loyalism meant to them, how they expressed their loyalism, their responses to Irish independence and their experiences afterwards. The collection offers fresh insights and new perspectives on the Irish Revolution and the early years of southern independence, based on original archival research. It addresses issues of particular historiographical and political interest during the ongoing 'Decade of Centenaries', including revolutionary violence, sectarianism, political allegiance and identity and the Irish border, but, rather than ceasing its coverage in 1922 or 1923, this book - like the lives with which it is concerned - continues into the first decades of southern Irish independence. Ireland And The Great War written by Niamh Gallagher and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-28 with History categories.

On 4 August 1914 following the outbreak of European hostilities, large sections of Irish Protestants and Catholics rallied to support the British and Allied war efforts. Yet less than two years later, the Easter Rising of 1916 allegedly put a stop to the Catholic commitment in exchange for a re-emphasis on the national question. In Ireland and the Great War Niamh Gallagher draws upon a formidable array of original research to offer a radical new reading of Irish involvement in the world's first total war. Exploring the 'home front' and Irish diasporic communities in Canada, Australia, and Britain, Gallagher reveals that substantial support for the Allied war effort continued largely unabated not only until November 1918, but afterwards as well. Rich in social texture and with fascinating new case studies of Irish participation in the conflict, this book has the makings of a major rethinking of Ireland's twentieth century.

Revolutionary Limerick written by John O'Callaghan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with History categories.

O'Callaghan adds another explanatory regional variation to an already complex history. Limerick was consistently one of the most violent theatres of the revolution and the author engages with a number of debates which have been conducted in the public eye. He investigates in detail controversial issues around the subtext of the frequently gratuitous use of violence during the War of Independence. It is important to identify who inflicted and suffered violence, and to understand why perpetrators killed and how victims died. --

The League Of Ireland written by Conor Curran and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-12-30 with Sports & Recreation categories.

2021 saw the centenary of the formation of the League of Ireland, the Republic of Ireland’s primary professional association football league. This new collection draws on the work of a number of leading historians of Irish soccer and seeks to examine a number of previously under-researched aspects relating to the league. The book examines the initial growth of clubs in Dublin and the Free State League’s early turbulent history, while the impact of Irish players and administrators on the development of soccer clubs at home and abroad is also assessed. Following the partition of Ireland in 1921, players continued to move from Dublin clubs to those in Northern Ireland and this is also discussed, particularly in light of the Troubles of 1968–1998. Despite the migration of many Irish-born players to Britain, the League of Ireland has also attracted internationally based players and the impact of this is also examined. The role of the league in the provision of players for the Irish Olympic team is also explored, as is the work of SARI in its attempts to eradicate racism from Irish sport. This publication aims to commemorate some of those who have strived to maintain the League of Ireland’s presence against the backdrop of what has become the world’s most attractive football league, located in Ireland’s neighbour, England. It will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of Sports, History, Sociology and Politics. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal, Soccer & Society.
