Computing and information management technologies touch our lives in the environments where we live, play and, work. High tech is becoming the standard. Those of use who work in a laboratory environment are faced with an obvious challenge. How do we best apply these technol ogies to make money for our companies? The first level of deliverable benefits is achieved through task automation. The second level is ob tained by integrating the individual islands of automation. The third, or top level, of benefits is related to applying intelligence to computing applications. The use of computing technology, at level one, to automate lab pro cedures, methods, and instruments has been profitable for many years. We can easily find yearly returns in the range of 10-50% for investments at this level. For level two, the integration of some applications has evolved and has led to data management systems and local area net working in the lab environment. Investment paybacks at level two are substantially higher, in the range of 200-400%. Examples of applications at the top level, that of intelligent systems and applications, are few and far between. And what about the payback for investments at this level? With such limited experience at level three, we can only estimate the benefits. But again, they appear to be much higher, in the range of 2000- 4000%.

Government In Business Leading Or Lagging written by Hwee Hua Lim and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-09 with Political Science categories.

The evergreen debate over government's involvement in business continues in earnest. Participants straddle all stakeholder groups, from the state itself to the private sector to the public at large. Add to that debate increasing globalisation, and now de-globalisation, and the advent of technological advances. Criticism is often levelled at a government that is slow to act or one that belatedly introduces damning regulations. Many governments are already saddled with demands spanning mega infrastructural development to bulging fiscal deficits to evening out growth across the population. The politics of the day are however synonymous with short-termism. The Covid-19 pandemic has increased the bailout burden even more. The author attempts to provide a fair assessment of the potentially complementary roles that the public and private sectors can play in a fast-changing global economy, amidst the shifting expectations of society.Related Link(s)

Can Singapore Fall written by Lim Siong Guan and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-03 with Social Science categories.

Lim Siong Guan, Singapore's former Head of Civil Service (1999-2005) was the Institute of Policy Studies' 4th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore. This book contains edited versions of the three IPS-Nathan Lectures he gave between September and November 2017, and highlights of his dialogue with the audience. Lim addresses the question, 'Can Singapore Fall?', by examining the state of Singapore today and proposing what Singapore and Singaporeans must do in order to prevent economic and social decline. Taking inspiration from Sir John Glubb's essay, The Fate of Empires and Search for Survival, Lim urges Singaporeans to counter decline by observing the 'three legs of honour': Trust, Diversity, and Excellence. These include becoming a gracious society and building up a culture of innovation, excellence and outwardness. Lim also reminds us that cultural change takes a generational effort to effect; for change to happen, Singaporeans must thus act with urgency and act now for the well-being of future generations. The IPS-Nathan Lectures series was launched in 2014 as part of the S R Nathan Fellowship for the Study of Singapore. The S R Nathan Fellow delivers a series of lectures during their term to advance public understanding and discussion of issues of critical national interest.

A Singapore journalist is in Wuhan, the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak, to do on-the-ground stories of the pandemic. Having to resort to cat-and-mouse tactics to evade censorship curbs, he goes about searching for true-to-life stories. He comes upon first-hand personal accounts of fear and fearlessness, selfishness and self-sacrifice, hope and heartbreak as told to him by the people he interviewed—many reliving experiences that reveal the best and worst of humanity in a crisis. But what intrigues him most is the do-or-die decisions that some were forced to make when extreme circumstances called for extreme actions. He also runs into unscrupulous scam operators, including those from the media, who try to profit from the tragedy—which he then tries to expose. Then, mysterious circumstances behind a man’s death leave him with a puzzle to solve even as he heads back to Singapore. And he has to solve it quickly to save a life.
