Excerpt from Lineage Book, 1899, Vol. 29: 28001-29000 He members whose records appear in this volume bear the Na 1 Numbers 28001 to 29000. They were admitted during 1899, e Miss Susan Rev1ere Hetzel was Registrar General. Mong them are the names of twenty-two Real Daughters, se records should be interesting to students of longevity tables, these ladies were alive one hundred and sixteen years after the of the war in which their fathers fought. He many references scattered through this volume show that the es of some of the same Revolutionary ancestors have appeared revious volumes, a sure evidence that these sturdy patriots have e than one representative still living to carry on the work they 1n. Most of the names are new, however, and more than another ment is thus saved from oblivion. Again they seem to stand ne, to remind the forgetful present of what it owes to the past. He same faithful compiler, Sarah Hall Johnston, whose care has ked the preceding volumes, has given to this one whatever of i it contains, and I can not let it go to press without this public. Excerpt from Lineage Book, Vol. 30: 29001 30000, 1899 Several preceding volumes of this series have lacked the records of a number of members and this volume is no exception. Up to the date of going to press, no answers have been received to letters sent months ago, asking for information which might have com pleted some of these records. In such cases it has seemed better to print nothing than to print something with the risk that it might prove to be erroneous. To do this would destroy the value of the book, which must be authentic if it is to serve the purpose for which it was designed. By the time that a second edition is printed it may be possible to insert what is necessarily omitted now. This is the twenty-ninth volume prepared by the present compiler. As it also completes the thirtieth thousand of the society's member ship, it has seemed fitting to mark the occasion by adding to the title-page the name of one whose patient care has made all these volumes what they are. Excerpt from The Genealogy of the Prince Family: From 1660 to 1899 In compiling a work of this kind, gathering genealogical data from so many different sources, no one only those who have had some experience in this line of work, has any ad equate idea of the amount of time, labor, and expense that is consumed in investigation and research, which is requi site for a full and complete record. Many embarrassments are encountered which give the compiler no little anxiety, especially so in some of the correspondence and records that have been received from many friends and interested parties, which were better than the average, yet some have been so illegible that great care and due diligence have been exercised to avoid as many errors as possible in the compilation of this work, but undoubtedly some will be found. It is impossible to get every date correct, there be ing so many discrepancies in records of dates and names. To many unacquainted with genealogical information, many of the items or records contained herein, though very valuable and interesting, may seem too trivial or too much beneath what is called the dignity of history to be in setted, yet it may be observed, that we are not entirely com petent judges of what may be valuable or interesting to those who shall come after us. Instead of polished sen tences, or well turned periods, [rut/z in its simplicity should be the aim of the genealogist and historian. A person can write a book in a very short time, but there is not a person that will ever live long enough to gather all the records and important data which might be found concerning the Prince family since their emigration to this country to the present time. Excerpt from The Historic Genealogy of the Lowells of America From 1639 to 1899 We call special attention to this chapter as a most valuable part of this work. We have put fifteen years of time and labor in this work, and Abner Lowell before us about ten years. Besides my wife has contributed several years of most intelligent labor. At first we had no thought of writing the Lowell Genealogy. We began with the purpose of straightening out some ancestral snarls for our children. Little by little it grew upon us until it was impossible to stop. We have not attempted a full history. One has said To do justice to the name of Lowell would require more than a moderate sized volume; a name not only distinguished in litera ture, theology and jurisprudence, but in all the relations of life. The family is justly honored, having derived its high position by works for the public good. The name is fixed upon monuments which can only perish in the wreck of all things.
