Feeling sad during a funeral and being relaxed while having dinner with friends are atmospheric feelings. However, the notion of “atmosphere”, meaning not only a subjective mood, but a sensorial and affective quality that is widespread in space and determines the way one experiences it, has intensified only recently in scientific debate. The discussion today covers a wide range of theoretical and applied issues, involving all disciplines, paying attention more to qualitative aspects of reality than to objective ones. These disciplines include the psy- approaches, whose focus on an affective experience that is emerging neither inside nor outside the person can contribute to the development of a new paradigm in psychopathology and in clinical work: a field-based clinical practice. This collection of essays is the first book specifically addressing the link between atmospheres and psychopathology. It challenges a reductionist and largely unsatisfactory approach based on a technical, pharmaceutical, symptomatic, individualistic perspective, and thus promotes the exchange of ideas between psy- disciplines, humanistic approaches and new trends in sciences.

The vast majority of mental health clinicians and researchers rely on diagnostic systems based on operational criteria. This book explores the newly founded Empathic Movement. The movement began in 2020, when noted artists were called upon by Menotti Lerro to sign the Empathic Manifesto, bringing their individual expressions of the “arts” together in a less individualistic way. They then started to help create a new cultural pole in southern Italy, giving life to the Contemporary Arts Centre, which founded the Poetry Village, the Village of Aphorisms, and the Cilento Poetry Prize, and shone light on a new cultural territory. The book argues that the decentralization of culture gives voice to the silent masses, especially the peasant voices in the mountains, with a particular emphasis on intense and genuine emotion and feelings shared with others through the arts, rejecting individualism, social exclusion, and excessive competition between artists. The symbolic myth of the movement is called Unus: a semi-unknown god representing the Total Artist who was killed, torn to pieces, and thrown into the Alento river by his brothers, leading to the old separation of the arts.
