This book provides a concise and meticulous introduction to functional analysis. Since the topic draws heavily on the interplay between the algebraic structure of a linear space and the distance structure of a metric space, functional analysis is increasingly gaining the attention of not only mathematicians but also scientists and engineers. The purpose of the text is to present the basic aspects of functional analysis to this varied audience, keeping in mind the considerations of applicability. A novelty of this book is the inclusion of a result by Zabreiko, which states that every countably subadditive seminorm on a Banach space is continuous. Several major theorems in functional analysis are easy consequences of this result. The entire book can be used as a textbook for an introductory course in functional analysis without having to make any specific selection from the topics presented here. Basic notions in the setting of a metric space are defined interms of sequences. These include total boundedness, compactness, continuity and uniform continuity. Offering concise and to-the-point treatment of each topic in the framework of a normed space and of an inner product space, the book represents a valuable resource for advanced undergraduate students in mathematics, and will also appeal to graduate students and faculty in the natural sciences and engineering. The book is accessible to anyone who is familiar with linear algebra and real analysis.

This book is a unique introduction to the theory of linear operators on Hilbert space. The authors' goal is to present the basic facts of functional analysis in a form suitable for engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians. Although the Definition-Theorem-Proof format of mathematics is used, careful attention is given to motivation of the material covered and many illustrative examples are presented. First published in 1971, Linear Operator in Engineering and Sciences has since proved to be a popular and very useful textbook.

This book provides a treatment of analytical methods of applied mathematics. It starts with a review of the basics of vector spaces and brings the reader to an advanced discussion of applied mathematics, including the latest applications to systems and control theory. The text is designed to be accessible to those not familiar with the material and useful to working scientists, engineers, and mathematics students. The author provides the motivations of definitions and the ideas underlying proofs but does not sacrifice mathematical rigor. From Vector Spaces to Function Spaces presents: an easily accessible discussion of analytical methods of applied mathematics from vector spaces to distributions, Fourier analysis, and Hardy spaces with applications to system theory; an introduction to modern functional analytic methods to better familiarize readers with basic methods and mathematical thinking; and an understandable yet penetrating treatment of such modern methods and topics as function spaces and distributions, Fourier and Laplace analyses, and Hardy spaces.

This book evolved from a one-year sequence of courses offered by the authors at Iowa State University. The audience for this book typically included theoreti cally oriented first- or second-year graduate students in various engineering or science disciplines. Subsequently, while serving as Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering, and later, as Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, the first author continued using this book in courses aimed primarily at graduate students in control systems. Since administrative demands precluded the possibility of regularly scheduled classes, the Socratic method was used in guiding students in self study. This method of course deliv ery turned out to be very effective and satisfying to student and teacher alike. Feedback from colleagues and students suggests that this book has been used in a similar manner elsewhere. The original objectives in writing this book were to provide the reader with ap propriate mathematical background for graduate study in engineering or science; to provide the reader with appropriate prerequisites for more advanced subjects in mathematics; to allow the student in engineering or science to become famil iar with a great deal of pertinent mathematics in a rapid and efficient manner without sacrificing rigor; to give the reader a unified overview of applicable mathematics, thus enabling him or her to choose additional courses in math ematics more intelligently; and to make it possible for the student to understand

Convex Functional Analysis written by Andrew J. Kurdila and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-05-23 with Science categories.

This volume is dedicated to the fundamentals of convex functional analysis. It presents those aspects of functional analysis that are extensively used in various applications to mechanics and control theory. The purpose of the text is essentially two-fold. On the one hand, a bare minimum of the theory required to understand the principles of functional, convex and set-valued analysis is presented. Numerous examples and diagrams provide as intuitive an explanation of the principles as possible. On the other hand, the volume is largely self-contained. Those with a background in graduate mathematics will find a concise summary of all main definitions and theorems.

Multidimensional Analysis written by George W. Hart and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-03-17 with Mathematics categories.

This book deals with the mathematical properties of dimensioned quantities, such as length, mass, voltage, and viscosity. Beginning with a careful examination of how one expresses the numerical results of a measurement and uses these results in subsequent manipulations, the author rigorously constructs the notion of dimensioned numbers and discusses their algebraic structure. The result is a unification of linear algebra and traditional dimensional analysis that can be extended from the scalars to which the traditional analysis is perforce restricted to multidimensional vectors of the sort frequently encountered in engineering, systems theory, economics, and other applications.
