Linear Integral Equations: Theory and Technique is an 11-chapter text that covers the theoretical and methodological aspects of linear integral equations. After a brief overview of the fundamentals of the equations, this book goes on dealing with specific integral equations with separable kernels and a method of successive approximations. The next chapters explore the properties of classical Fredholm theory and the applications of linear integral equations to ordinary and partial differential equations. These topics are followed by discussions of the symmetric kernels, singular integral equations, and the integral transform methods. The final chapters consider the applications of linear integral equations to mixed boundary value problems. These chapters also look into the integral equation perturbation methods. This book will be of value to undergraduate and graduate students in applied mathematics, theoretical mechanics, and mathematical physics.

Readable and systematic, this volume offers coherent presentations of not only the general theory of linear equations with a single integration, but also of applications to differential equations, the calculus of variations, and special areas in mathematical physics. Topics include the solution of Fredholm’s equation expressed as a ratio of two integral series in lambda, free and constrained vibrations of an elastic string, and auxiliary theorems on harmonic functions. Discussion of the Hilbert-Schmidt theory covers boundary problems for ordinary linear differential equations, vibration problems, and flow of heat in a bar. 1924 edition.

This book combines theory, applications, and numerical methods, and covers each of these fields with the same weight. In order to make the book accessible to mathematicians, physicists, and engineers alike, the author has made it as self-contained as possible, requiring only a solid foundation in differential and integral calculus. The functional analysis which is necessary for an adequate treatment of the theory and the numerical solution of integral equations is developed within the book itself. Problems are included at the end of each chapter. For this third edition in order to make the introduction to the basic functional analytic tools more complete the Hahn–Banach extension theorem and the Banach open mapping theorem are now included in the text. The treatment of boundary value problems in potential theory has been extended by a more complete discussion of integral equations of the first kind in the classical Holder space setting and of both integral equations of the first and second kind in the contemporary Sobolev space setting. In the numerical solution part of the book, the author included a new collocation method for two-dimensional hypersingular boundary integral equations and a collocation method for the three-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger equation. The final chapter of the book on inverse boundary value problems for the Laplace equation has been largely rewritten with special attention to the trilogy of decomposition, iterative and sampling methods Reviews of earlier editions: "This book is an excellent introductory text for students, scientists, and engineers who want to learn the basic theory of linear integral equations and their numerical solution." (Math. Reviews, 2000) "This is a good introductory text book on linear integral equations. It contains almost all the topics necessary for a student. The presentation of the subject matter is lucid, clear and in the proper modern framework without being too abstract." (ZbMath, 1999)

This book presents numerical methods and computational aspects for linear integral equations. Such equations occur in various areas of applied mathematics, physics, and engineering. The material covered in this book, though not exhaustive, offers useful techniques for solving a variety of problems. Historical information cover ing the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is available in fragments in Kantorovich and Krylov (1958), Anselone (1964), Mikhlin (1967), Lonseth (1977), Atkinson (1976), Baker (1978), Kondo (1991), and Brunner (1997). Integral equations are encountered in a variety of applications in many fields including continuum mechanics, potential theory, geophysics, electricity and mag netism, kinetic theory of gases, hereditary phenomena in physics and biology, renewal theory, quantum mechanics, radiation, optimization, optimal control sys tems, communication theory, mathematical economics, population genetics, queue ing theory, and medicine. Most of the boundary value problems involving differ ential equations can be converted into problems in integral equations, but there are certain problems which can be formulated only in terms of integral equations. A computational approach to the solution of integral equations is, therefore, an essential branch of scientific inquiry.

Many physical problems that are usually solved by differential equation methods can be solved more effectively by integral equation methods. Such problems abound in applied mathematics, theoretical mechanics, and mathematical physics. This uncorrected soft cover reprint of the second edition places the emphasis on applications and presents a variety of techniques with extensive examples.Originally published in 1971, Linear Integral Equations is ideal as a text for a beginning graduate level course. Its treatment of boundary value problems also makes the book useful to researchers in many applied fields.

Linear and Nonlinear Integral Equations: Methods and Applications is a self-contained book divided into two parts. Part I offers a comprehensive and systematic treatment of linear integral equations of the first and second kinds. The text brings together newly developed methods to reinforce and complement the existing procedures for solving linear integral equations. The Volterra integral and integro-differential equations, the Fredholm integral and integro-differential equations, the Volterra-Fredholm integral equations, singular and weakly singular integral equations, and systems of these equations, are handled in this part by using many different computational schemes. Selected worked-through examples and exercises will guide readers through the text. Part II provides an extensive exposition on the nonlinear integral equations and their varied applications, presenting in an accessible manner a systematic treatment of ill-posed Fredholm problems, bifurcation points, and singular points. Selected applications are also investigated by using the powerful Padé approximants. This book is intended for scholars and researchers in the fields of physics, applied mathematics and engineering. It can also be used as a text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in applied mathematics, science and engineering, and related fields. Dr. Abdul-Majid Wazwaz is a Professor of Mathematics at Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

I fell in love with integral equations about twenty years ago when I was working on my thesis, and I am still attracted by their mathematical beauty. This book will try to stimulate the reader to share this love with me. Having taught integral equations a number of times I felt a lack of a text which adequately combines theory, applications and numerical methods. Therefore, in this book I intend to cover each of these fields with the same weight. The first part provides the basic Riesz-Fredholm theory for equa tions of the second kind with compact opertors in dual systems including all functional analytic concepts necessary for developing this theory. The second part then illustrates the classical applications of integral equation methods to boundary value problems for the Laplace and the heat equation as one of the main historical sources for the development of integral equations, and also in troduces Cauchy type singular integral equations. The third part is devoted to describing the fundamental ideas for the numerical solution of integral equa tions. Finally, in a fourth part, ill-posed integral equations of the first kind and their regularization are studied in a Hilbert space setting. In order to make the book accessible not only to mathematicans but also to physicists and engineers I have planned it as self-contained as possible by requiring only a solid foundation in differential and integral calculus and, for parts of the book, in complex function theory.
