A presente obra examina a integração entre a ação política e a linguagem, demonstrando como a linguagem é vista de forma pragmática pelos atores políticos e que há uma relevante interação entre o discurso e a ação, abordando especialmente o mito político, a ideologia e o slogan. A ação política é avaliada pela sociedade de acordo com seus resultados. No entanto, tal ação não ocorre apenas em relação aos fatos em si, mas é determinada também pela linguagem, pelas ideologias e pelos mitos políticos. Sendo assim, este livro integra aspectos teóricos da ação política e da linguagem e recorre a exemplos da história da política, demonstrando que a linguagem, de recurso natural dos seres humanos, passou a ser interpretada de forma pragmática pelos atores políticos, sendo instrumentalizada de acordo com os interesses de quem enuncia o discurso, pois na Política se cumpre aquilo que Hobbes afirma sobre uma das principais características do ser humano: o desejo de poder e mais poder, o qual só cessa com a morte. Os atores políticos, nessa busca incessante pelo poder, bem como na luta pela sua preservação, adotam uma linguagem que dissimula a realidade, procurando dominar a sociedade não só do ponto de vista da ação real, mas também pelo uso da linguagem, influenciando sobre as suas crenças políticas e procurando manter as massas tranquilas e as elites seguras. Desse modo, de uma característica comum da cultura, a linguagem passou historicamente a ser utilizada como um instrumento de alienação e de dominação, sendo vista de forma instrumental, onde a verdade do discurso é secundária e o que tem maior valor é o seu resultado. A obra trata, portanto, do discurso político, de sua capacidade de persuasão e de alienação, alertando a sociedade sobre os discursos que nos parecem ser verdadeiros, porém são mitos construídos por artesãos hábeis e matreiros, como afirmou Ernst Cassirer.

Natural languages all contain constructions the interpretation of which depends upon the situation in which they are used. In Language and Context, Jason Stanley presents a series of essays which develop a theory of how the situation in which we speak interacts with the words we use to help produce what we say. The reason we can so smoothly operate with sentences that can be used to express very different items of information, Stanley argues, is that there are linguistically mandated constraints on the effects of the situation on what we say. These linguistically mandated constraints are most evident in the cases of sentences containing explicit pronouns, such as 'She is a mathematician', where interpretation of the information expressed is guided by the use of the pronoun 'she'. But even when such explicit pronouns are lacking, our sentences provide similar cues to allow our interlocutors to determine the information expressed. We are, in the main, confident that our interlocutors will smoothly grasp what we say, because the grammar and meaning of our sentences encodes these constraints. In defending this theory, Stanley pays close attention to specific cases of context-sensitive constructions, such as quantified noun phrases, comparative adjectives, and conditionals. Philosophers and cognitive scientist have appealed to the dependence of what is intuitively said by a sentence on the situation in which it is uttered to argue against the possibility of a systematic theory of meaning for natural language. The theory developed in this book is a vigorous defence of the possibility of a systematic theory of meaning for natural language against these influential tendencies.
