Conspiracy has been a political phenomenon throughout history, relevant to any form of power from antiquity to the post-modern era. This means of resistance against power was prevalent during the Renaissance, and the Italian fifteenth century, in particular, can be regarded as an 'age of plots'. This book offers the first full-length investigation of Italian Renaissance literature on the topic of conspiracy. This literature covered a range of different genres and it enjoyed widespread diffusion during the second half of the fifteenth century, when the development of this literary production was connected with the affirmation of centralized political thought and princely ideology in Italian states. The centrality of conspiracies also emerges in the sixteenth century in Machiavelli's work, where the topic is closely interlaced with problems of building political consensus and management of power. This volume presents case studies of the most significant humanist texts (representative of different states, literary genres, and of prominent authors—Alberti, Poliziano, Pontano—and minor, yet important, literati), and it also investigates Machiavelli's political and historical works. Through interdisciplinary analysis, this study traces the evolution of literature on plots in early Renaissance Italy. It points out the key function of the classical tradition and the recurring narrative approaches, the historiographical techniques, and the ideological angles that characterize the literary transfiguration of the topic. This volume also offers a reconsideration of the complex facets of humanist political literature that played a crucial role in the development of a new theory of statecraft.

Nell’Italia del tardo medioevo, la signoria rurale ha avuto un’importanza spesso trascurata dagli studi. Eppure la sua diffusione era tutt’altro che marginale: anzi, nella maggioranza delle regioni italiane si stendeva su porzioni di popolazione e territorio più vaste, superiori a quelle raggiunte nei secoli precedenti. Nel 2017, per colmare questa carenza degli studi è stata intrapresa una ricerca collettiva, il PRIN La signoria rurale nel XIV-XV secolo: per ripensare l’Italia tardomedievale, di cui questo volume costituisce l’ultimo esito : si propone di ricapitolare le principali acquisizioni raggiunte e di fornire nuove riflessioni sulle molte tematiche trattate. Il volume, grazie all'edizione critica di tutte le fonti disponibili, di cui molte inedite, studia sistematicamente i 17 parlamenti generali celebrati a Napoli in età aragonese. L'istituto, reintrodotto nel regno da Alfonso il Magnanimo, fu un una sede importante della negoziazione tra la monarchia, i baroni e le città demaniali, seppur non l'unica. Attraverso i parlamenti e altre riunioni simili (parlamenti regionali, consigli regi allargati) si ripercorre tutta la storia del regno dal 1441 al 1500. Dei parlamenti si analizzano le procedure, le scritture, le motivazionie le conclusioni. Essi, nella pur evidente - ma irregolare - continuità, assolsero a funzioni differenti, in relazione alle contingenze politiche, alle diverse posizioni del re, da un lato, e dei convocati dall'altro. Fisco e giustizia sostanziarono le discussioni, e in generale il confronto politico e simbolico tra il re e i suoi sudditi.

[Italiano]: Il volume ricostruisce per la prima volta la biblioteca che Alfonso d’Aragona e Ippolita Maria Sforza, duchi di Calabria, allestirono in Castel Capuano a Napoli nella seconda metà del secolo XV. Costituita da due collezioni indipendenti, riunite da Alfonso dopo la morte di Ippolita Maria, questa raccolta si caratterizzò come biblioteca principesca. Essa fu, infatti, composta principalmente da manoscritti di lusso, confezionati e miniati in varie città, e risentì fortemente dei valori umanistici e delle ambizioni culturali e politiche dei suoi possessori. Al termine della sua esistenza, segnato dalla caduta della dinastia aragonese e dalla dispersione dei beni a essa appartenuti, questa biblioteca giunse a contare più di centocinquanta unità e a configurarsi, dunque, come una delle principali raccolte private sorte sul suolo della Penisola italica nel Rinascimento. /[English]: This book reconstructs for the first time the library that Alfonso of Aragon and Ippolita Maria Sforza, Dukes of Calabria, assembled in Castel Capuano in Naples in the second half of the 15th century. Consisting of two independent collections, united by Alfonso after the death of Ippolita Maria, this collection was characterised as a princely library. It was, in fact, mainly composed of luxury manuscripts, made and illuminated in various cities, and was strongly permeated with the humanistic values and cultural and political ambitions of its owners. At the end of its existence, marked by the fall of the Aragonese dynasty and the dispersion of its possessions, this library came to number more than one hundred and fifty and was therefore one of the major private collections that existed on the soil of the Italian Peninsula during the Renaissance.

[English]:The specific attention paid to the Florentine «civic humanism» and the success of “republican” paradigm achieved by the Anglo-American historiography are responsible, in various forms, for limiting differently historical interests in the princely and monarchical contexts of the late Middle Ages Italian peninsula. This tendency, joined with the serious documentary loss of the Naples State Archive, put so far the Seggi élites of many Southern mainland cities away on the margins of historical international debate.During the 15th century the reception of the Antiquity transformed the legitimacy languages and the power practices both of the princes and of the whole peninsula urban élites. Which auctores did they inspire to? Which is the relationship between the classicism and the institutional reform proposals? This book tries to answer to these questions, focusing on the Naples context, not deeply investigated, through the study and the critical edition of Pietro Jacopo de Jennaro’s Libro terczo de regimento de l’Opera de le medaglie. It is a book wrote between 1500 and 1504, as free comment in form of medaglie to Livy’s Ab urbe condita libri, in order to legitimize the political prominence of Seggi antiqui lineages and to propose a new mixed government. By studying this work it is possible to identify the debates developed during the Aragonese kingdom fall, concerning the relationships between representation and obedience, consensus and legitimacy, and to offer new ways to rethink the humanistic political classicism and the establishments of oligarchical urban governments between the 15th and 16th centuries.[Italiano]: La particolare attenzione riservata all’«umanesimo civile» fiorentino e l’affermarsi nella storiografia anglo-americana del paradigma “repubblicano” hanno contribuito, in forme diverse, a limitare l’interesse degli storici per i contesti principeschi e monarchici della penisola italiana nel tardo Medioevo. Questa tendenza, unita alle gravi perdite documentarie dell’Archivio di Stato di Napoli, ha relegato finora le élites ascritte ai Seggi di numerose città del Regnum ai margini del dibattito storiografico internazionale. Nel corso del Quattrocento il riuso dell’Antico non trasformò solo i linguaggi di legittimità e l’azione dei principi, ma anche quelli delle élites urbane dell’intera penisola. A quali auctores essi s’ispirarono? Qual è il rapporto tra il classicismo e i progetti di riforme istituzionali? Il volume prova a rispondere a tali quesiti, soffermandosi sul contesto napoletano, finora poco indagato, attraverso l’analisi e l’edizione critica del Libro terczo de regimento de l’Opera de le medaglie di Pietro Jacopo de Jennaro. Si tratta di un’opera composta tra il 1500 e il 1504, come libero commento in medaglie agli Ab urbe condita libri di Livio, per ridefinire la preminenza politica della più antica nobiltà dei Seggi e per proporre un nuovo modello di governo misto. Attraverso l’esame di tale opera si ripercorrono i dibattiti relativi al rapporto tra rappresentanza e obbedienza, tra consenso e legittimità negli ultimi anni del regno dei Trastámara, offrendo nuovi spunti per ripensare il classicismo politico umanistico e i processi di chiusura oligarchica tra Quattro e Cinquecento.

[Italiano]: La storiografia degli ultimi decenni, sulla base dell’edizione di numerose fonti, ha provveduto a revisionare il tema della diffusione della riforma monastica nell’Italia Meridionale. A fronte del marginale influsso di movimenti più largamente affermatisi in Europa, si registra invece la nascita di una pluralità di esperienze alla ricerca di un modello autoctono di stampo eremitico e pastorale. Fra queste, a pieno titolo, va inscritta anche la congregazione di S. Maria del Gualdo. Attraverso l’analisi di un eterogeneo complesso di fonti superstiti questo lavoro si prefigge di ricostruire la genesi del carisma fondazionale e la storia della famiglia religiosa. Muovendo dalle diverse proposte agiografiche prodotte per il fondatore, Giovanni da Tufara, verranno sondate le dinamiche relative al processo di istituzionalizzazione. L’appoggio della Sede Apostolica faciliterà, intanto, l’equilibrio dei rapporti con i vescovi locali per l’organizzazione e l’espansione religiosa, mentre le autorità monarchiche e le aristocrazie locali contribuiranno alla stabilizzazione economica e patrimoniale, fino al tentativo di assurgere a signoria monastica. Il modello religioso proposto, oltre a rispondere alle esigenze di ideali propri della seconda rinascita dell’eremitismo, si struttura in un sensibile coinvolgimento nell’azione pastorale, contribuendo persino alla scomparsa del fenomeno delle chiese private. L’anelito da parte dei laici di partecipare al modello di vita monastica troverà espressione nella forma giuridica della oblazione di sé, nella prassi commemorativa, nella sepoltura presso il monastero, nonché nell’attività di ospizi legati alla rete monastica e disseminati lungo le vie di pellegrinaggio al santuario dell’Arcangelo. Per una serie di concause legate a fenomeni naturali (pestilenze, terremoti), a crisi interne di carattere religioso e infine al radicale mutamento del sistema economico di età aragonese la congregazione non riuscirà a rimodulare la propria organizzazione, avviandosi così verso il completo dissolvimento che sopraggiungerà all’inizio della modernità./[English]: The historiography of recent decades, based on the edition of numerous sources, has revised the issue of the spread of monastic reform in Southern Italy. In the face of the marginal influence of more widely established movements in Europe, there is instead the emergence of a plurality of experiences in search of an indigenous model of a hermitic and pastoral style. Among these, in its own right, should be inscribed the congregation of St. Mary of Gualdo. Through the analysis of a heterogeneous complex of surviving sources this work aims to reconstruct the genesis of the founding charism and the history of the religious family. Starting from the various hagiographic proposals produced for the founder, John of Tufara, the dynamics related to the institutionalization process will be probed. The support of the Apostolic See will facilitate, meanwhile, the balancing of relations with local bishops for religious organization and expansion, while monarchical authorities and local aristocracies will contribute to economic and patrimonial stabilization, up to the attempt to rise to monastic lordship. The proposed religious model, in addition to responding to the demands of ideals proper to the second revival of hermitism, is structured in a sensitive involvement in pastoral action, even contributing to the disappearance of the phenomenon of private churches. The yearning on the part of the laity to participate in the model of monastic life will find expression in the legal form of self-oblation, memorial practice, burial at the monastery, as well as in the activity of hospices linked to the monastic network and scattered along the pilgrimage routes to the shrine of the Archangel. Due to a series of concauses related to natural phenomena (plagues, earthquakes), internal crises of a religious nature, and finally the radical change in the economic system of the Aragonese age, the congregation will not succeed in remodeling its organization, thus heading toward the complete dissolution that will occur at the beginning of modernity.
