Linguistic Variation in Research Articles investigates the linguistic characteristics of academic research articles, going beyond a traditional analysis of the generically-defined research article to take into account varied realizations of research articles within and across disciplines. It combines corpus-based analyses of 70+ linguistic features with analyses of the situational, or non-linguistic, characteristics of the Academic Journal Registers Corpus: 270 research articles from 6 diverse disciplines (philosophy, history, political science, applied linguistics, biology, physics) and representing three sub-registers (theoretical, quantitative, and qualitative research). Comprehensive analyses include a lexical/grammatical survey, an exploration of structural complexity, and a Multi-Dimensional analysis, all interpreted relative to the situational analysis of the corpus. The finding that linguistic variation in research articles does not occur along a single parameter like discipline is discussed relative to our understanding of disciplinary practices, the multidimensional nature of variation in research articles, and resulting methodological considerations for corpus studies of disciplinary writing.

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate patterns of linguistic variation in research articles. As a sub-register of academic writing, research articles have been extensively discussed with an acknowledgment that language variation exists due to disciplinary differences. Hypothesizing that there are situational variables beyond disciplines that could also explain linguistic variation within research writing, I explore writers' linguistic choices in research articles that follow different methodological paradigms. The research is based on a corpus of 120 published research articles in their full-length with three methodologies (theoretical, qualitative, and quantitative) in multiple disciplines. With frequency data of 81 grammatical features, I conducted a factor analysis using Principal Axis Factoring in SPSS to identify clusters of linguistic variables that are correlated with one another and find trends in the data. The analysis discovers that linguistic variation in research writing occurs along three parameters (Dimension A, Dimension B, and Dimension C) with co-occurring sets of linguistic features, which explain 37% of shared variance in the corpus of research articles. Results from statistical tests show that the extent of the frequency pattern each methodological paradigm displays can account for two parameters of variation. I demonstrate that in research articles, linguistic resources cluster in distinctive patterns that are reflective of their research methodology. The findings can inform both writing instructors and students of the importance of cultivating methodology-specific writing competence. While there exist patterns, this dissertation also reveals that research writing is not as formulaic, suggesting that there is diversity and creativity in producing various writing styles whether or not the variation is accounted for by patterns of linguistic features.

The study of language variation in social context continues to hold the attention of a large number of linguists. This research is promoted by the annual colloquia on New Ways of Analyzing Variation in English' (NWAVE). This volume is a selection of revised papers from the NWAVE XI, held at Georgetown University. It deals with a number of items, some of which have often been discussed, others that have been less emphasized. The first group of articles in the volume center on a frequent theme: speech communities as the essential setting for understanding variation in language. The topic of variation in language has received considerable attention in the field of general linguistics in recent years. This includes research on linguistic micro-variation that is dependent on fine distinctions in syntax and information structure. However, relatively little work has been done on how this variation is acquired. This book focuses on how different types of variation are expressed in the input and how this is acquired by young children. The collection of papers includes studies of the acquisition of variation in a number of different languages, including English, German, Greek, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Swiss German, Ukrainian, and American Sign Language. Different kinds of linguistic variation are considered, ranging from pure word order variation to optionally doubly filled COMPs and the resolution of scopal ambiguities. In this book John A. Hawkins argues that major patterns of variation across languages are structured by general principles of efficiency in language use and communication. Evidence for these comes from languages permitting structural options from which selections are made in performance, e.g. between competing word orders and between relative clauses with a resumptive pronoun versus a gap. The preferences and patterns of performance within languages are reflected, he shows, in the fixed conventions and variation patterns across grammars, leading to a 'Performance-Grammar Correspondence Hypothesis'. Hawkins extends and updates the general theory that he laid out in Efficiency and Complexity in Grammars (OUP 2004): new areas of grammar and performance are discussed, new research findings are incorporated that test his earlier predictions, and new advances in the contributing fields of language processing, linguistic theory, historical linguistics, and typology are addressed. This efficiency approach to variation has far-reaching theoretical consequences relevant to many current issues in the language sciences. These include the notion of ease of processing and how to measure it, the role of processing in language change, the nature of language universals and their explanation, the theory of complexity, the relative strength of competing and cooperating principles, and the proper definition of fundamental grammatical notions such as 'dependency'. The book also offers a new typology of VO and OV languages and their correlating properties seen from this perspective, and a new typology of the noun phrase and of argument structure.
