These papers, in the main, deal with Medieval Judaeo-Arabic, the linguistic tool of Jewish culture in Arab lands, one of the apogees of Jewish culture in general. It reflects a variety of Middle Arabic, in which Classical Arabic, post-Classical Arabic, [ancient] Neo-Arabic and pseudo-correct features alternate. This ancient Neo-Arabic constitutes the missing link between Classical Arabic and the modern Arabic dialects. Some of the early Judaeo-Arabic documents are spelt in a hebraicized spelling, rather than in standard Judaeo-Arabic orthography. Prof. Joshua Blau, Emeritus, Max Schloessinger Professor of Arabic Languages and Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is President of the Academy of Hebrew Language.

This volume presents a selection of papers from the third congress of the Society for Judaeo-Arabic Studies: after introductory material by the editors, it ranges over a wide area of Judaeo-Arabic language and literature, giving the reader a clear impression of recent research in the field. Beginning in 1172, Judah ibn Tibbon, who was called the father of Hebrew translators, wrote a letter to his son that was full of personal and professional guidance. The detailed letter, described as an ethical will, was revised through the years and offered a vivid picture of intellectual life among Andalusi elites exiled in the south of France after 1148. S. J. Pearce sets this letter into broader context and reads it as a document of literary practice and intellectual values. She reveals how ibn Tibbon, as a translator of philosophical and religious texts, explains how his son should make his way in the family business and how to operate, textually, within Arabic literary models even when writing for a non-Arabic audience. While the letter is also full of personal criticism and admonitions, Pearce shows ibn Tibbon making a powerful argument in favor of the continuation of Arabic as a prestige language for Andalusi Jewish readers and writers, even in exile outside of the Islamic world.

This volume contains a study of multiglossia in Judeo-Arabic in addition to a critical edition, annotated translation, and a cultural and a grammatical study of The Purim Scroll of the Cairene Jewish Community, written in 1524 to commemorate the deliverance of the Jews of Cairo from Ahmad Pasha, the governor of Egypt. 'Multiglossia' is a linguistic state in which different varieties of a language exist side by side in a language community and are used under different circumstances or with various functions. 'Judeo-Arabic' has been written and spoken in various forms by Jews throughout the Arabic-speaking world. Part One places the language of the Judeo-Arabic text of the Scroll within the multiglossic history of Judeo-Arabic.
