Diabetes mellitus has become epidemic on a global scale, and millions of new cases are diagnosed every year. With an estimated 80% of people with diabetes living in disadvantaged regions, and the key roles of lipoproteins in the pathogenesis of the chronic complications of diabetes, this volume will be relevant to many readers globally. It is our intention that the contents will advance knowledge of the readers who will use it to contribute to the reduction of the burden associated with altered lipoproteins in people with diabetes. The second edition of this book provides an updated and comprehensive review of the field. The book, which includes many tables and figures, is presented in three main sections: (i) Lipoprotein metabolism, qualitative changes and measurements; (ii) Lipoproteins and the complications of diabetes; and (iii) the treatment of lipoproteins in diabetes. Each chapter from the first edition has been updated, and new topics added. New topics include the links between glycemia and lipoproteins, the role of lipoproteins in ischemic stroke, the diagnosis and management of statin intolerance (which is thought to be more common in people with diabetes) and the use of PCSK9 inhibitors and fish oils in the management of lipoproteins in people with diabetes. This book is written by an international group of experts in the clinical, laboratory and research aspects of lipoproteins in diabetes. Lipoproteins in Diabetes Mellitus, 2nd Edition is a comprehensive reference on the clinical and scientific aspects of lipoproteins in diabetes. It is a must-have resource for primary care and specialist clinicians, clinical and basic science researchers and to trainees and students.

Diabetes mellitus has become epidemic on a global scale, and millions of new cases are diagnosed every year. The epidemic of diabetes mellitus is expected to result in one of the steepest rises in human morbidity and mortality ever observed outside of wartime. Insulin resistance is a hallmark of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and is characterized by impaired insulin-signaling transduction. Authoritative and comprehensive, Lipoproteins in Diabetes Mellitus details the many changes wrought by insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. The book begins by summarizing the various techniques to measure lipoproteins and their subclasses. The mechanisms by which insulin resistance and diabetes mellitus increase risk for atherosclerosis, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic nephropathy are then explored in detail. Finally, the effects of lifestyle modification and the results of clinical trials using established and investigational drugs are discussed. An invaluable contribution to the literature, Lipoproteins in Diabetes Mellitus is a comprehensive reference on the clinical and scientific aspects of lipoproteins in diabetes. It will have a long-lasting and significant effect on the medical management of people with diabetes.

The book features clinical and experimental data covering four major topics. General treatment of hyperlipidaemias is reviewed including the efficacy of different drugs. Benefits of treatment by the Lipid Research Clinics Coronary Primary Prevention Trial are shown. The second topic comprises the epidemiological aspects of diabetes. Diabetes and lipoprotein metabolism is the subject of the third are considered. VLDL metabolism and apoprotein metabolism are reviewed and complimented by a general consideration of protein glycosylation and the possible pathophysiological consequences of the glycosylation of LDL and HDL. The final topic reflects the growing interest in the molecural biology of hyperlipidaemias. The genetic determinants of hyperlipidaemias are reviewed as well as links between genetic disorders, diabetes and hyperlipidaemias. [Editeur]

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with a greater risk of developing atherosclerotic macrovascular diseases like myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. There is 2- to 4-fold increased risk of atherosclerotic heart disease and stroke in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic patients. As the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing rapidly, this diabetes related atherosclerotic disease is predicted to be a major public health problem. Atherosclerosis is a complex process and in diabetic patients, it behaves differently with increased lesion progression and severity. This accelerated atherosclerotic process in diabetics is explained on the basis of several risk factors like hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, accelerated formation of advanced glycation end products, increased oxidative stress, and genetic factors. It is difficult to establish precisely the elements responsible for this atherosclerosis in diabetics, but by epidemiological, clinical, and by animal studies, it has been possible to get an idea of this problem in diabetics. Of the several risk factors for atherosclerosis in diabetes, dyslipidemia is the leading one, and an insight into the pathophysiologic relation of isolated triglyceridemia in Indian diabetics with the identification of the targets for control of lipids in diabetes (practical vs. ideal) needs to be well understood by the treating physician. This book is designed to address such issues with supportive typical clinical scenarios, with which the readers will be able to identify. Thus, it provides an excellent opportunity to widen one’s perspective in this area.

In mammalian blood plasma there exist some 6 major lipoprotein classes. Under physiological conditions lipoproteins are certainly beneficial as they transport nutrients and steroids to numerous organs for further metabolism. On the other hand, under pathophysiological conditions most lipoprotein classes promote atherogenesis except of HDL that are considered to be anti-atherogenic. Lipoprotein research is a wide field comprising basic science, analytical methods and clinical investigations. Thus this issue does not raise the claim to give a comprehensive picture of the current knowledge, but rather focuses on specific questions related to animal models in lipoprotein research as well as features of the most atherogenic lipoprotein, Lp(a).
