This book, whose primary aim is to describe liquefaction processes and their implications for marine structures such as pipelines, sea outfalls, quay walls and caisson breakwaters, discusses the subject of soil liqeufaction in the marine environment. In addition, the physics of liquefaction (including examples illustrating the catastrophic consequences of soil liquefaction with regard to marine structures) are described, and the mathematical modelling of liqeufaction is treated in detail. Also, carefully selected numerical examples support the discussion of assessing liquefaction potential, and benchmark cases such as buried gas pipelines and their floatation, caisson breakwaters, cover stones and their interaction with liquefied soil along with counter measures are investigated.

This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.

Methods and practices for constructing sophisticated prestressedconcrete structures. Construction of Prestressed Concrete Structures, Second Edition, provides the engineer or construction contractor with a completeguide to the design and construction of modern, high-qualityconcrete structures. This highly practicable new edition of Ben C.Gerwick's classic guide is expanded and almost entirely rewrittento reflect the dramatic developments in materials and techniquesthat have occurred over the past two decades. The first of the book's two sections deals with materials andtechniques for prestressed concrete, including the latest recipesfor high-strength and durable concrete mixes, new reinforcingmaterials and their placement patterns, modern prestressingsystems, and special techniques such as lightweight concrete andcomposite construction. The second section covers application tobuildings; bridges; pilings; and marine structures, includingoffshore platforms, floating structures, tanks, and containments.Special subjects such as cracking and corrosion, repair andstrengthening of existing structures, and construction in remoteareas are presented in the final chapters. For engineers and construction contractors involved in any type ofprestressed concrete construction, this book enables the effectiveimplementation of advanced structural concepts and their economicaland reliable translation into practice.

This conference brought together specialists in cyclic soil behaviour in order to discuss important results and new ideas in the field, and to share expertise in design of various problems involving cyclic or dynamic behaviour of soils. This book covers a variety of topics: * Theory and analysis, including constitutive relations of soil under cyclic loading, post-seismic stability analysis of soil/structure, dynamic stability of structures, liquefaction analysis of marine structures due to cyclic loading, and more * Cyclic and dynamic laboratory and model testing, centrifuge testing and in-situ testing. * Numerical analysis, including computer methods * Design of industrial applications and marine structures, installation methods of piles, vibrocompaction, densification of ballast in railway structures, case studies of earthquakes and post-liquefaction observations.

This book treats the subject of porous flow and its applications in three engineering and scientific problems. The first major part of the book is devoted to solute transport in unsaturated porous media. Dynamic hydraulic conductivity and degree of saturation associate with pore pressures are also included in the consolidation-induced solute transport process. The second part of this book focuses on tidal dynamics in coastal aquifers, including shallow water expansion for sloping beaches, two-dimensional problem in estuarine zone and leaky confined aquifers. The final part of the book summarizes the recent development of porous model in the field of liquefaction around marine infrastructures including fundamental mechanisms of momentary and residual seabed liquefaction, two-dimensional and three-dimensional porous models for fluid-seabed interactions around breakwaters, pipelines and piled foundations in marine environments. The authors’ aim is to describe in detail the applications of porous models for several engineering problems. This book will provide academic researchers and industry an overview of recent development in the field of porous models and the applications. Coastal Structures are undergoing renewal and innovation to better serve the needs of our society - from environmental co-existence and habitat enhancement to risk management. The CSt07 conference is the fifth in a series that highlight significant progress in the innovation, design and construction of coastal structures. Proceedings of these CSt conferences have yielded milestone works, frequently cited references in the field. This two-volume proceedings contains the final revised version of 178 papers that have been reviewed, selected and discussed at the CSt07 conference. The volume brings to readers a comprehensive range of contributions, covering all aspects of research, design, construction, and maintenance of coastal structures including new up-to-date interesting topics, such as tsunamis and storm surge defences, climate change, piled coastal structures as well as ecological issues, a new addition to the traditional program.
