Keen to start a fresh expression of church? Before leaping into action, this booklet will help you to 'listen for mission.' This involves developing an attitude where you learn to 'multi-listen' - to God, to society, to your community, to your church - so that you can find out what God is doing and know how best to join in. This short, accessible guide draws together some of the lessons learned so far and enables church councils, deanery synods, circuit meetings and house groups to think through and discuss the various issues involved. It can be used on its own or with the companion DVD - Expressions: the DVD 1: Stories of Church for a Changing Culture.

Listening skills, and the perspective gained through careful listening, are more important in congregations than ever. Many factors make attentive listening a significant contributor to healthy congregations. As we enter into a post-Christendom culture, the people coming into congregations, as well as the people in the wider community, are less likely to be operating from a shared set of assumptions. With world-wide migration reshaping our communities and congregations, diverse perspectives coming from varied cultural backgrounds are also more common. The breakdown of many support structures in society has created profound pastoral care needs, making listening increasingly significant for both ministers and lay leaders. Polarization over so many issues and the increasing emphasis on story-telling in the journey of faith are two additional reasons why listening matters today. Careful and loving listening nurtures care, connection and depth, which contribute to congregational life and health. Listening to God is another aspect of listening which is gaining increased attention today. Many congregational leaders have become weary of church as a business and are looking for authentic experiences of God’s guidance. Congregations are increasingly engaging in communal discernment. Many listening skills used in human interactions are also building blocks for listening to God.

This is a landmark book that will renew our understanding of what the gospel - literally 'the good news about Jesus' - is for today's cultures. It begins with a key challenge - do we believe God speaks in the cultural context, or only in the Christian tradition? Part One - Listening to God in the cultural context explores the radically changing culture in which the church exists today, the rise of new spiritualities, the secularisation of society and religion's increasingly dubious public image. Part Two - Listening to God in the Christian tradition looks at key periods in Christian history as responses to cultural changes, from the ancient pagan world to modernist faith. What can we learn from the lessons of the past? Part Three moves from theory to practice and tells great stories where innovative evangelism is taking place - from supermarkets to festivals to the internet.

Tim Fischer AC, in his Foreword to this book writes: "As you study the papers that follow, as each of us tries to take up the cudgels for a better and Christian-oriented society, we do so helped by both the work of Catholic Social Services Victoria and the bold leadership of the 266th occupant of the Throne of St Peter as the first Southern Hemisphere, first Argentinian, first Jesuit Holy Father, resident downstairs at the hotel Santa Marta in Vatican City - namely Pope Francis." Many of the chapters in this book are based on papers presented at a conference organised by Catholic Social Services Victoria in 2013. The topic of that conference, the impact of Catholic identity and mission on what we do and how we do it, is relevant to the many parts of the Church working in a culturally diverse Australia. The aim of the conference was to enhance the contribution of the Church to the building of a more just and compassionate society - to enhance our work in building the Kingdom. This book extends that work.

Listening To The Neighbor written by Byungohk Lee and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-12 with Religion categories.

The Trinity can be understood as a social community with members speaking and listening to one another in love, or, as Luther understood the Trinity, as conversation, then God's mission essentially involves in mission-in-dialogue. Byungohk Lee contends the church has to embrace the dialogical dimension in missional terms because the triune God is the subject of mission. The missional church conversation has taken it for granted that local churches should speak and listen to their neighbors. In contrast, for many churches in Asia, including Korea, mission has generally tended to be practiced in a monological, rather than dialogical, manner. The neighbor has not been regarded as a conversational partner of the church, but only as the object for its mission. In Listening to the Neighbor Lee shows that some local churches have participated in God's mission by listening to their neighbors. He argues that listening is not a technique, but a multifaceted learning process in missional terms. The church must nurture its hearts, eyes, and ears in order to listen to the sigh of its neighbors.

In this astonishing book, the author's purpose is to help transform individuals by fostering a spirit of holy listening that enriches faith and opens seekers to the fullness of God's presence and of the neighbor's need. The intent is to help the reader develop a faith that seeks understanding and makes real meaning in a world of chatter. In each chapter, a prominent work of art is interpreted, which serves as a focal point for demonstrating how the eyes and heart are integrally involved in hearing the Spirit of God. The book explores why holy listening is so difficult by examining key hermeneutical issues within the biblical text and by considering the nature of God, the journey of faith, and human limits. This illuminating book also examines the spiritual need for holy listening and analyzes critical questions of faith that lead to a greater awareness of self and the church in the mutual calling to be the incarnation of Jesus Christ in a postmodern world. Essential in the task of holy listening is an awareness of the importance of spiritual rest and the role of the Sabbath plays in providing an opportunity to participate in the redeeming work of God. In this regard, the book underscores the need for faith this is both a linear journey toward wholeness and an ability to make home and community along life's way. The need for holy listening is made even more acute by the reality of suffering that accompanies life's pilgrimage, and the book ponders the meaning of suffering and how it can open one to the presence of the divine. More than a theological analysis of suffering, the book addresses the author's effort to listen for redemptive meaning in light of his own daughter's struggle with juvenile diabetes. The book concludes with a discussion of the spiritual value of silence as the way to experience anew the story of Jesus who beckon those who listen to follow through a life of service and love.

Hope To Hear Soon written by Janice Woodrum and has been published by Destiny Image Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-18 with Religion categories.

Jesus said, I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly. John 10:10b The abundant life that He desires for us thankfully includes an awareness of His presence, and the opportunity to communicate with Him freely. But in our walk with Christ, we sometimes experience interruptions in that precious sense of unbroken fellowship with Him. He seems far away and we have trouble hearing His voice clearly. We are unsure what we can do to restore that communion. The acrostic of this poem spells out some of the basic points of this book that we can ponder prayerfully in evaluating our communication and communion with God. H Have I been HONEST with you, Lord, bringing my hearts truth? O Am I OBEDIENT to what you tell me to do? P Am I PERSUADED youre always near? E Am I always EXPECTING from you to hear? T Am I TRUSTING in your faithfulness too? O Do I OFFER all I can, thanking you again and again? H Do I HUNGER for your presence and thirst for your Word? E Do I have EMPATHY for others? Do I ENJOY your Spirit in them? Am I ENCOURAGING to others whenever I can? A Could I ABANDON myself more fully? Am I surrendered to you? R Do I rest in your SOVEREIGNTY too? S Would I SEEK you in the midst of a storm? O Or am I OBSTINATE and so stubborn? O Am I OVERCONFIDENT to a fault? N NEEDING you, because I dont want to be without? Hope to Hear Soon; I Hope to Hear Soon I Will Always Look to Hear What I Can Hear From You.
