Taking as a point of departure the legendary courtship of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett, a courtship conceived on the printed page, Wilson explores how easily, how seductively, literary desire becomes sexual desire and vice versa. "Literary seductions," she writes, are "violent, extreme, and irreversible." Not all reading seduces, not all writing inflames. But when they do, what is written ceases to be merely an arrangement of symbols on a page. The word has been made flesh. Lady Caroline Lamb and Lord Byron, Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller, Laura Riding and Robert Graves, Osip and Nadzheda Mandelstam, W. B. and Georgie Yeats were all in the grip of a compulsion for writing and reading, enmeshed in words. Miller called his relationship with Nin, a "literary fuck-fest"; for Riding and Graves, it took on the self-destructive (and self-conscious) melodrama of a Russian novel; for the Mandelstams, it was a life-giving (if self-sacrificing) bond in a precarious world; for George and W. B. Yeats, it offered sexual stimulus. The couplings of verbs and nouns do more than precede coupling; they comprise it. Literary Seductions is itself a seductive book. "One of the deadliest of seductions for feminists is their seduction by theorists, by theories". With this boldly polemical stroke, Jane Miller begins her exploration stealthily, cumulatively, and with a deft and compelling intelligence. In looking at the complex relation of women to culture and literature, and to theory and politics, and in recalling her own coming to feminism, she asks how women experience themselves within ideas and traditions which simultaneously include and exclude them, take their presence for granted, and deny it. Seduction as a category binds together the ambivalence--the pleasure and the invisible coercions--of male/female relations, while at the same time transgressing the implicit imperative in patriarchal societies to confine eroticism and its politics to the closet. Seductions consists of five loosely connected, almost autonomous chapters, which nevertheless trace a historical progression from the eighteenth century to the present. Miller borrows Antonio Gramsci's idea of "hegemony", using it to contextualize her readings of two famous literary seductions, as told through Richardson's Clarissa and Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. The second chapter focuses on Raymond Williams' novels and criticism, using them to chart the larger exclusions of feminism by Marxism. The author enlists Carolyn Steedman's Landscape for a Good Woman in an attempt to survey Williams' telling silences. The third chapter reconstructs and analyzes the life and career of Clara Collet, Miller's great-aunt, close friend of George Gissing, civil servant, and expert on women's education and work. Through Collet, Miller bestows individual color on the pressures inflicted onprofessional women to assume male perspectives and procedures. The fourth chapter is superb. Bracketed by discussions of Charlotte Bronte's Villette and Toni Morrison's Beloved, it questions influential treatments of colonialism and orientalism which use women as a metaphor without listening for the testimony of real women. It is a moving plea to set the category of "women" alongside more privileged categories of class and race. The final chapter counterpoints the internal contradictions in the "polyphonic" theories of Bakhtin and Volosinov with an account of women's distrust of other women in Margaret Atwood's Cat's Eye. By ending with an evocation of women's self-dislike, Miller emphasizes the chilling ways in which cultural exclusions and degradations of women are internalized and replicated by complicitous victims.

Eighteenth-century literature displays a fascination with the seduction of a virtuous young heroine, most famously illustrated by Samuel Richardson's Clarissa and repeated in 1790s radical women's novels, in the many memoirs by fictional or real penitent prostitutes, and in street print. Across fiction, ballads, essays and miscellanies, stories were told of women's mistaken belief in their lovers' vows. In this book Katherine Binhammer surveys seduction narratives from the late eighteenth century within the context of the new ideal of marriage-for-love and shows how these tales tell varying stories of women's emotional and sexual lives. Drawing on new historicism, feminism, and narrative theory, Binhammer argues that the seduction narrative allowed writers to explore different fates for the heroine than the domesticity that became the dominant form in later literature. This study will appeal to scholars of eighteenth-century literature, social and cultural history, and women's and gender studies.

What is flirtation, and how does it differ from seduction? In historical terms, the particular question of flirtation has tended to be obscured by that of seduction, which has understandably been a major preoccupation for twentieth-century thought and critical theory. Both the discourse and the critique of seduction are unified by their shared obsession with a very determinate end: power. In contrast, flirtation is the game in which no one seems to gain the upper hand and no one seems to surrender. The counter-concept of flirtation has thus stood quietly to the side, never quite achieving the same prominence as that of seduction. It is this elusive (and largely ignored) territory of playing for play’s sake that is the subject of this anthology. The essays in this volume address the under-theorized terrain of flirtation not as a subgenre of seduction but rather as a phenomenon in its own right. Drawing on the interdisciplinary history of scholarship on flirtation even as it re-approaches the question from a distinctly aesthetic and literary-theoretical point of view, the contributors to Flirtations thus give an account of the practice of flirtation and of the figure of the flirt, taking up the act’s relationship to issues of mimesis, poetic ambiguity, and aesthetic pleasure. The art of this poetic playfulness—often read or misread as flirtation’s “empty gesture”—becomes suddenly legible as the wielding of a particular and subtle form of nonteleological power.
