Excerpt from Literatura Militar Española Modesto, y que no es otra cosa que lo que su titulo indica, un vo cabulario militar, redactado con bastante claridad ysuf1ciente á dar idea de la organización militar romana de la época. Después de este autor, la serie delos romanos se cierra y corona con Vegecio, perteneciente á la mitad del siglo IV y época de Valentiniano II. Vegecio, de quien sólo se sabe la época en que vivió y el detalle de haber sido funcionario del imperio, ha conseguido suma celebridad por su Re militaris instituta, ó sea las Instituciones militares, que dedicó al antes citado emperador. Lo poco que nos resta de los escritos de los antiguos relativos al arte militar, da á la obra de Vegecio grandísimo valor, y así no es de extrañar que ningún autor que se ocupe de la milicia antigua deje de citarle. Hemos perdido los libros de Cátón el Anciano sobre la disciplina militar, los de Polibio, relativos á la táctica, así como los de otros escritores ilustres que se ocuparon de las distintas partes en que el arte de la guerra se divide. Frontino y Polieno sólo se ocupan de estratage mas y ardides de guerra; Eliano únicamente de la táctica de los griegos; Hígtn10 se ha limitado á la castramentación; Eneas á la poliorcetica, y por lo mismo, la compilación de Vegecio, que este es el nombre que merece la obra de este autor y el que él mismo le da, es la sola obra antigua que puede considerarse como un curso general de arte militar. No es preciso hacer aquí mención de las obras del emperador griego León, ni del emperador Mauri cio, simples c0pias de Julio el Africano, de Onosander y de otros autores, en que se da muy pequeña idea del poderío y de la milicia romana. La de Vegecio se divide en cinco libros, y en el I trata de la recluta, de los países en que debe verificarse, de los ejercicios a' que deben consagrarse los soldados jóvenes, delas armas y de la fortificación de los campos; en el II dela organización dela legión, tal como existía en los antiguos ejércitos romanos; en el III de las operaciones en campaña, del servicio sanitario, de las maniobras sobre el campo de batalla; en el IV del ataque y defensa de las pla zas fuertes: el V está consagrado á la táctica naval.
