Though literature and censorship have been conceived as long-time adversaries, this collection seeks to understand the degree to which they have been dialectical terms, each producing the other, coeval and mutually constitutive. On the one hand, literary censorship has been posited as not only inescapable but definitive, even foundational to speech itself. One the other, especially after the opening of the USSR's spekstrahn, those enormous collections of literature forbidden under the Soviets, the push to redefine censorship expansively has encountered cogent criticism. Scholars describing the centralised control of East German print publication, for example, have wanted to insist on the difference of pre-publication state censorship from more mundane forms of speech regulation in democracies. Work on South African apartheid censorship and book banning in colonial countries also demonstrates censorship's formative role in the institutional structures of literature beyond the metropole. Censorship and the Limits of the Literary examines these and other developments across twelve countries, from the Enlightenment to the present day, offering case studies from the French revolution to Internet China. Is literature ever without censorship? Does censorship need the literary? In a globalizing era for culture, does censorship represent the final, failed version of national control?

Die Literaturwissenschaftlerin Anke Jaspers erprobt dabei die Möglichkeiten einer praxeologisch ausgerichteten Literaturgeschichte, bei der Verlage als zentrale Akteure konzeptionell mit einbezogen werden. Empirisch fundiert führt sie vor, inwiefern sich die ‚Ausgabe‘ als Kategorie zwischen Text und Werk in die Theorie des literarischen Werks integrieren lässt. Am hier entwickelten Genre der ‚Ausgabeninterpretation‘ und unter Berücksichtigung der Rolle von Verlagen in der Literaturproduktion zeigt Jaspers zudem, wie sich intentionalistische Gedankenfiguren der Hermeneutik differenzierter darstellen lassen. Mit dem Blick auf die Mitarbeit von Autor:innen an der Produktion ihrer Bücher wird zudem eine Materialästhetik literarischer Autorschaft entfaltet.

We live in a world that is saturated with color, but how should we make sense of color's force and capacities? This book develops a theory of color as fundamental medium of the social. Constructed as a montage of scenes from the past two hundred years, Organizing Color demonstrates how the interests of capital, management, governance, science, and the arts have wrestled with colour's allure and flux. Beyes takes readers from Goethe's chocolate experiments in search of chromatic transformation to nineteenth-century Scottish cotton mills designed to modulate workers' moods and productivity, from the colonial production of Indigo in India to globalized categories of skin colorism and their disavowal. Tracing the consumption, control and excess of industrial and digital color, other chapters stage encounters with the literary chromatics of Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow processing the machinery of the chemical industries, the red of political revolt in Godard's films, and the blur of education and critique in Steyerl's Adorno's Grey.
