Demens er ikke ensbetydende med et totalt menneskeligt forfald, og der er derfor behov for et humanistisk syn på lidelsen. "Hverdagen med demens" er Christine E. Swanes ph.d.-afhandling fra 1996. Afhandlingen, som blev udarbejdet i 1992-95, gør op med tidens stereotype og negative blik på demenslidelsen. Den indeholder en række interviews med mennesker med demens, pårørende og en lang række sundhedsprofessionelle samt analyser og metodiske overvejelser, bl.a. om hverdagslivsfilosofi og humanistisk gerontologi. Afhandlingen blev senere omarbejdet til den populære bog "Skyggen af en hverdag. Mennesket og lidelsen ved demens" (1998). Christine E. Swane (f. 1960) er mag.art. i kultursociologi og fik i 1996 ph.d.-graden med afhandlingen "Hverdagen med demens – billeddannelser og hverdagserfaringer i kulturgerontologisk perspektiv". Hun har i knap 40 år beskæftiget sig med forskning og formidling inden for gerontologien – læren om aldring, alderdom og ældre mennesker. I perioden 1998-2004 var hun leder af Gerontologisk Institut, 1998-2000 leder af Videnscenter på Ældreområdet og i 2004-2006 studieleder for Masteruddannelse i Gerontologi og Masteruddannelse i Rehabilitering på Syddansk Universitet. Siden 2006 har hun været direktør og forskningsleder i Fonden Ensomme Gamles Værn. Swane er en anerkendt ekspert inden for området og bidrager jævnligt til den offentlige debat.

Karin Michaëlis (1872–1950) was one of the most important Danish authors of the early 20th century and achieved enormous international success with her Bibi books about the life and adventures of a free-spirited Danish girl named Bibi. The series was not particularly popular in the author’s native country, however. This book unravels the intricate reasons behind the strikingly asymmetrical reception of the Bibi series at home and abroad while at the same time deconstructing this homeabroad dichotomy by showing that the Bibi books are an example of transnational children’s literature. They did not have their “home” in Denmark in that Karin Michaëlis wrote them specifically for foreign publishers, first and foremost the German Herbert Stuffer. The book further argues that the Danish texts are rewritings rather than originals and explores some of the salient textual features of the Danish and German Bibi books. Finally, it examines the series’ reception by young Italian readers in Fascist Italy and Karin Michaëlis’ Italian translator.
