"The Land of Footprints" is the memoir of Stewart Edward White of his African safari adventure. White spent a year in East Africa and shares the tale of his adventures there. He is however careful to avoid a romanticized view of the African continent, instead opting for a more realistic, albeit still interesting record, for as he states, "Probably each of us has his mental picture that passes as a symbol rather than an idea of the different continents. This is usually a single picture-a deep river, with forest, hanging snaky vines, anacondas and monkeys for the east coast of South America, for example. It is built up in youth by chance reading and chance pictures, and does as well as a pink place on the map to stand for a part of the world concerning which we know nothing at all. As time goes on we extend, expand, and modify this picture in the light of what knowledge we may acquire. So the reading of many books modifies and expands our first crude notions of Equatorial Africa. And the result is, if we read enough of the sort I describe above, we build the idea of an exciting, dangerous, extra-human continent, visited by half-real people of the texture of the historical-fiction hero, who have strange and interesting adventures which we could not possibly imagine happening to ourselves..."

Finding a missing nuke in three and half million square miles of the dangerous South China Sea is a job that’s too big for anyone else—except The Team. The South China Sea is a dangerous place. China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei are all building artificial islands in an attempt to claim territorial waters. When the United States discovers that a long missing twenty-megaton nuclear bomb—a “Broken Arrow”—sits at six hundred feet, right next to the construction of a new island, The Team is dispatched to recover it. With Chinese fighter jets buzzing US Navy ships, ISIS fighters in Brunei preparing for an attack on Singapore, and two reporters from New Zealand begging for rescue from ISIS pursuers, it’s a mission that will test The Team. Posing as Canadian oilmen working on an offshore oil platform, The Team is tasked with recovering two nuclear weapons lost almost thirty years ago when a US bomber went down. The problem? Not only is Brunei building an artificial island right next to the wreck-site, they’re also harboring an ISIS training facility. Espionage, black ops, and politics blend for a volatile read in David Salkin’s newest Team thriller!

Engineers Of Happy Land written by Rudolf Mrázek and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with Social Science categories.

Based on close reading of historical documents--poetry as much as statistics--and focused on the conceptualization of technology, this book is an unconventional evocation of late colonial Netherlands East Indies (today Indonesia). In considering technology and the ways that people use and think about things, Rudolf Mrázek invents an original way to talk about freedom, colonialism, nationalism, literature, revolution, and human nature. The central chapters comprise vignettes and take up, in turn, transportation (from shoes to road-building to motorcycle clubs), architecture (from prison construction to home air-conditioning), optical technologies (from photography to fingerprinting), clothing and fashion, and the introduction of radio and radio stations. The text clusters around a group of fascinating recurring characters representing colonialism, nationalism, and the awkward, inevitable presence of the European cultural, intellectual, and political avant-garde: Tillema, the pharmacist-author of Kromoblanda; the explorer/engineer IJzerman; the "Javanese princess" Kartina; the Indonesia nationalist journalist Mas Marco; the Dutch novelist Couperus; the Indonesian novelist Pramoedya Ananta Toer; and Dutch left-wing liberal Wim Wertheim and his wife. In colonial Indies, as elsewhere, people employed what Proust called "remembering" and what Heidegger called "thinging" to sense and make sense of the world. In using this observation to approach Indonesian society, Mrázek captures that society off balance, allowing us to see it in unfamiliar positions. The result is a singular work with surprises for readers throughout the social sciences, not least those interested in Southeast Asia or colonialism more broadly.
