This vital text for oncologists and radiotherapists provides an in-depth account of all aspects of radioembolization, a relatively novel technique based on the efficacy of radiotherapy for the treatment of liver tumors. Radioembolization combines embolization (intravascular deployment of particles – microspheres loaded with yttrium-90) and brachytherapy (local administration of radiotherapy), thereby allowing delivery of high doses of beta-radiation specifically to the tumoral area.

This is the second edition of a very well received book devoted specifically to the treatment of liver tumors by radioembolization with 90Y microspheres. The success of the first edition was based on the provision of all the fundamental information required for successful use of this therapeutic modality in clinical practice. The new edition has been fully updated to cover the most recent advances and includes additional chapters on regulations and emerging trends. Detailed information is provided on the full range of relevant topics, including hepatic vascular anatomy (including variants), dosimetry, assessment of tumor response, and the results achieved using radioembolization alone and in combination with other treatments in patients with primary or metastatic disease. Complications and side-effects are also fully discussed. This book will prove immensely valuable for both beginners and practitioners.

A 2015 CADTH Rapid Response report identified systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and economic evaluations on the clinical and cost-effectiveness of yttrium-90 microsphere radioembolization for the treatment of primary or secondary liver cancer, but no evidence on uveal melanoma liver metastasis was found. With increasing interest in comparing the impact of selective internal radiotherapy with radioisotopes (SIRT) to other treatment therapies such as transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), this Rapid Response report aims to review the comparative clinical and cost-effectiveness of radioembolization with yttrium-90 microspheres versus other options for the treatment of adult patients with uveal melanoma liver metastasis.

This book offers a practical and modern update on radioisotope therapy. Clinically oriented, it provides a thorough guide to patient management, with the latest indications and procedures for the current radioisotopic treatments. It addresses the clinical problems associated with each respective pathology, discussing the management of patients (diagnosis and non-radioisotope therapy), the radiopharmaceuticals available today, and the current radioisotopic procedures. Wherever possible, information on dosimetry is included at the end of each topic, together with a list of and comments on the most recent guidelines with their recommendations for radiometabolic therapy. The book is divided into six main sections: thyroid diseases, hepatic tumors (HCC and hepatic metastases), bone metastases from prostate cancer, lymphomas, and neuroendocrine tumors. The last section is dedicated to new perspectives of radioisotope treatment. Based on contributions from of a multidisciplinary team of specialists: oncologists, surgeons, endocrinologists, hematologists, urologists, radiopharmacists and nuclear medicine physicians, it provides a comprehensive analysis of the position of radioisotope treatments among the various therapeutic options. Readers interested in targeted therapy, radiometabolic therapy, radioimmunotherapy and radiometabolic imaging will find this book both informative and insightful.

Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases written by Mauro Monteiro Correia and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-28 with Medical categories.

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed condition in oncology, affecting around 1.23 million individuals per year, according to recent statistics. Of these patients, about 50% will develop liver metastases and approximately 20% will present a stage IV disease at diagnosis. These statistics make colorectal liver metastases (CLM) an issue of major importance in current oncology. The area of CLM is subject to great and continuous advances, as its pathophysiologic mechanisms are better understood and more therapeutic and surgical options are developed. Consequently, all professionals involved with the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of CLM should be kept up to date with the latest advances on the field, to provide high standard medical care to their patients. This book is designed to present the state-of-the-art in CLM management and, in doing so, to review the current evidence on CLM, discussing all important topics in the field. Coverage is broad and comprehensive, encompassing introductory topics (history, definitions, epidemiology, etc.), basic science subjects (molecular biology, genetics, dissemination process, etc.) and practical clinical topics (tumor behavior, diagnosis, drug therapy, radiation therapy, surgery, ablation, multidisciplinary teams, etc.). Although comprehensive on the coverage and selection of topics, each chapter is concise and objective, dissecting topics in a practical and direct format. Evidences and recommendations are included. Chapters display a brief introduction of the common knowledge, go straight to the detailed revision of the most recent years of the literature, and end with practical closing observations. This book is a tool for professionals (general and cancer surgeons, HPB surgeons, clinical oncologists, gastroenterologists and medical residents) and interns who search for a qualified and reader friendly revision on topics concerning Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases.

Radioembolization of yttrium-90 (Y-90) microspheres is used to treat primary and secondary cancers in the liver. Though this therapy has existed for decades, the treatment is not well optimized from treatment planning to post-procedural assessment. Recently, there has been a surge to utilize the small positron yield from the radioactive decay of Y-90 for post-radioembolization positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of the microsphere activity distribution. These images provide promise for dosimetry assessment, identifying extrahepatic uptake and possible under-dosed lesions that may benefit from subsequent therapy. However, due to the low positron statistics and high flux of Bremsstrahlung radiation, PET imaging of Y-90 presents with its own unique set of challenges. In this work, we optimized the PET imaging acquisition and reconstruction parameters when imaging with a hybrid PET/MRI scanner to offer the most accurate images for quantitative dosimetric applications. We then tested the variability of imaging Y-90 with PET across multiple institutions in a world-wide phantom study in preparation for a multi-institutional phase I/II clinical trial. Lastly, we determined the clinical utility of using Y-90 PET-based dosimetry to predict clinical outcomes and assess how well it correlates with pre-treatment imaging.

Image Guided Interventions In Oncology written by Christos Georgiades and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-28 with Medical categories.

This book provides an up-to-date and comprehensive primer on image-guided interventions for cancer. Image-guided interventional oncology is gaining popularity as it is a minimally invasive and more precisely targeted approach that both proves more effective and results in fewer side effects. This book’s aim is to provide a clinical guide to interventional oncology for the entire oncology team. Chapters are approached with the same interdisciplinary perspective that is used in the care itself, with each chapter written by an interventional radiologist with contributions from medical, surgical and/or radiation oncologists. Chapters cover the major cancers that can benefit from interventional oncology treatment (including lung, liver, kidney, and bone), as well as some of the physics and physiology behind these interventional modalities. This is an ideal guide for interventional radiologists, medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, as well as relevant trainees.
