Five years ago, I wrote a collection of short stories based in and around Liverpool. To commemorate the launch of the book I decided to revisit it and just tidy a few bits and bobs up and so on. To say that this was an optimistic undertaking would be an understatement. What is left is a completely different book with lots of new material, twists and changes to some of the stories that meant that once I stood back and looked at it, then "Liverpool Revisited" is a completely different book to "Liverpool". Without any further to-do, here then is the original description of the book, which stands just as much as it did for the new book as it most definitely did for the old one."The Sound of Guitars..."Liverpool. A city of poets, musicians, comedians and several banana shaped lamb statues. Oh, and a yellow submarine - and a cathedral (or two), and now a collection of fifteen short stories, tall tales and mysterious occurrences celebrating the city as well.Wrapped around Liverpool in the same way that the river Mersey wraps around the city itself, intertwining with its people and places, "Liverpool" showcases the love of life, laughter and music that the city embodies, and makes its own. Come with me now to see the mist rolling off that wonderful, beautiful river, and if you were to let your mind wander and imagine that the river is a song then that song would be a shanty, sad and melancholic, yet lifting as well. It would make you laugh, it would make you cry. It may even make you think, but for sure it would most definitely break your heart.Welcome to Liverpool, the gateway to absolutely everywhere else.

In 1944, World War II was still raging, especially for English children. My father had been left with five children that he could not handle, and then we found ourselves in a strange place, an Orphanage in the Lake District of Great Britain. Many times, our nieces and nephews have asked my sisters and me about our time in the Orphanage, and I have promised them a book for years. I finally felt I could dredge up what I had pushed down for so long. These are stories about our lives, as well as some of the girls, in the home from 1944 to 1952, my memories of events that happened, good and bad, in those eight years. In many ways, that time gave me determination and fortitude to press on regardless, and I hope the remembering, even though a bit painful, helps in your understanding.

Outside of the capital London, no other British city has attracted more film-makers than Liverpool. Sometimes standing in for London, New York, Chicago, Paris, Rome or Moscow, and sometimes playing itself – or a version of its own past in Beatles biopics – Liverpool is an adaptable filmic backdrop that has attracted film-makers to its ports for decades. A place of passion, humour and pride, Liverpool evokes caverns and cathedrals, ferries and football grounds; it is a city so vivid we see it clearly even if we’ve never been there. From the earliest makers of moving images – among them the Mitchell & Kenyon film company, the Lumière brothers and pioneering early cinematographer Claude Friese-Greene – who preserved the city, the river, the docks, the streets and the people, Liverpool has endured as a cinematic destination. This collection celebrates that survival instinct and will be welcomed by enthusiasts of British cities, films and culture.

Art In A City Revisited written by Bryan Biggs and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Art categories.

This classic text, reissued to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the City of Liverpool, was originally published in 1967. It is a milestone in the examination of urban arts movements and also provides the starting point for looking at art in Liverpool from the 1960s to the present day and beyond. Based on a survey commissioned by the Bluecoat Society of Arts, the author did something that had never before been done for a single city, and arguably has never been done since. He surveyed the history of the visual arts in the city, looked at the cultural and institutional environment in which they developed, and asked the people of Liverpool how they viewed the visual arts in Liverpool - both in terms of public art and art in enclosed spaces. Willett saw a place with strong traditions in the visual arts, with new developments associated with the city's emergence in the 1960s as a centre for music and poetry. Willett concluded with an agenda for the development of art in Liverpool, and the spirit of this imbued much of the Bluecoat's work in the decades following publication. Revised with a new introduction Art in a City is a marker for the history of the visual arts in Liverpool.

This is not only the story of one of history's most popular songs, "Yesterday"... this is unique insight into one of the world's most accomplished recording artists, Paul McCartney. Recorded over half-a-century ago at the peak of the Beatles' triumphs, "Yesterday" remains at the top of the most recorded songs ever, with over 2,500 cover versions. As a Beatle, Paul McCartney was a brilliant songwriter and performer. Today, he is a shrewd businessman, musician, composer, and philanthropist. Focusing on "Yesterday" and the era in which it was created, author Ray Coleman, who was close to the Beatles' story from the start, draws a fresh portrait of McCartney, then and now. Coleman relates candid interviews with McCartney on a wide rage of subjects, including his rich and often mercurial relationship with John Lennon.

On turning fifty, Marion Dunn had a sudden desire to try out boxing. Despite the immense effort this required – the relentless, bone-sapping exhaustion of training with endless circuits and repeats – her whim quickly became a love affair with this most precise, disciplined of sports. Her account of a quest to master its essential techniques is a story of obsession, determination and sheer graft. It is also a story of the small-town amateur boxing gym – its unique camaraderie, triumphs and setbacks – and a routine of punishing fitness training, a laser focus on balance, intense willpower. From the sweat and toil in shabby youth clubs and chilly old drill halls, Marion takes us through the three years’ preparation before she is ready to step into the ring and spar for real against opponents. Every movement, each micro-improvement, every emotion, is revelatory and inspirational.
