In 1944, World War II was still raging, especially for English children. My father had been left with five children that he could not handle, and then we found ourselves in a strange place, an Orphanage in the Lake District of Great Britain. Many times, our nieces and nephews have asked my sisters and me about our time in the Orphanage, and I have promised them a book for years. I finally felt I could dredge up what I had pushed down for so long. These are stories about our lives, as well as some of the girls, in the home from 1944 to 1952, my memories of events that happened, good and bad, in those eight years. In many ways, that time gave me determination and fortitude to press on regardless, and I hope the remembering, even though a bit painful, helps in your understanding.

Many young men and women enlisted in the Forces, while older people joined the Home Guard or became Air Raid Precaution Wardens. The first sign of German interest in the important shipbuilding town of Barrow-in-Furness was in May 1936, when a rigid airship and passenger aircraft flew very low and slowly over the Furness rooftops. Vickers shipyard became a target for enemy bombing and eventually more than 10,000 houses were damaged or destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the Barrow Blitz that took place during April and May 1941. William Wordsworth's Guide to the Lakes gives a first-hand account of his feelings about the unique countryside that was the source of his inspiration. He addresses concerns that are relevant today, such as how the growing number of visitors, and the money they might bring, would affect such a small and vulnerable landscape.
