This book recounts the life stories - stories of loss and hope, of anxieties and aspirations - of generations of exiled Tibetans living in India since the late 1950s after the Chinese takeover of Tibet. Located in the realm of psycho-historical analysis, this work has a dual focus in interpreting and analyzing these life stories. First, a consistent effort is made to unravel the psychologically devastating consequences following refugeehood and torture. A simultaneous focus searches for symbols of human resilience - the opening up of creative possibilities and a return to renewed meanings in the lives of these exiles. Two central symbols of continuity among this community which are discussed are the Dalai Lama and the philosophy of Buddhism. This is a unique book that looks at issues of contemporary interest and relevance to the Tibetan community today, providing a different view of their 'place' in the wider political sphere. Lives in Exile - Exploring the World of Tibetan Refugees will be of interest to scholars in the fields of psychology, history, and refugee studies and to the general reader.

"In this moving memoir, Dekow Diriye Sagar shares his story of growing up in a rural village in Southern Somalia, his terrifying escape of the civil war in the 1990s, and his life in the United States after being resettled. Sagar's story begins in his home village near Bardere, in 1991, at the age of seven years old. In one horrific day, the family lost their home and many loved ones, and began the arduous 15-year journey that ultimately brought him to the United States as a refugee. The war in Somalia claimed hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, forced millions of citizens to seek safety and security in refugee camps and to flee into exile. Along the excruciating path to safety and freedom, shelter was a hot cloth tent with no electricity or running water. Life in Exile is a must-read for professionals in areas of healthcare, human services, education, and research. The book is ideal for those pursuing careers in political science, social work, health, education, leadership, and management, as well as for service providers in refugee and immigrant programs. Sagar's journey will deepen your understanding of a refugee's challenges and equip professionals to better serve this population."--Taken from back cover.

Refugees In Extended Exile written by Jennifer Hyndman and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-04 with Political Science categories.

This book argues that the international refugee regime and its ‘temporary’ humanitarian interventions have failed. Most refugees across the global live in ‘protracted’ conditions that extend from years to decades, without legal status that allows them to work and establish a home. It is contended that they become largely invisible to people based in the global North, and cease to remain fully human subjects with access to their political lives. Shifting the conversation away from the salient discourse of ‘solutions’ and technical fixes within state-centric international relations, the authors recover the subjectivity lost for those stuck in extended exile. The book first argues that humanitarian assistance to refugees remains vital to people’s survival, even after the emergency phase is over. It then connects asylum politics in the global North with the intransigence of extended exile in the global South. By placing the urgent crises of protracted exile within a broader constellation of power relations, both historical and geographical, the authors present research and empirical findings gleaned from refugees in Iran, Kenya and Canada and from humanitarian and government workers. Each chapter reveals patterns of power circulating through the ‘colonial present’, Cold War legacies, and the global ‘war on terror". Seeking to render legible the more quotidian struggles and livelihoods of people who find themselves defined as refugees, this book will be of great interest to international humanitarian agencies, as well as migration and refugee researchers, including scholars in refugee studies and human displacement, human security, globalization, immigration, and human rights.

F. Riordan captures and magnifies the passing beauty of the ordinary and the extraordinary that lingers near the surface of daily life.

A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice A BookPage Best Book of the Year "This exquisitely written book shows how recovery can come generations later through rebuilding connections—to people, the natural world, the past." —Robin Shulman, Washington Post "It’s long been assumed of the region where my grandmother was born…that at some point each year the dead will come home," Inara Verzemnieks writes in this exquisite story of war, exile, and reconnection. Her grandmother’s stories recalled one true home: the family farm left behind in Latvia, where, during WWII, her grandmother Livija and her grandmother’s sister, Ausma, were separated. They would not see each other again for more than 50 years. Raised by her grandparents in Washington State, Inara grew up among expatriates, scattering smuggled Latvian sand over the coffins of the dead, singing folk songs about a land she had never visited. When Inara discovers the scarf Livija wore when she left home, in a box of her grandmother’s belongings, this tangible remnant of the past points the way back to the remote village where her family broke apart. There it is said the suspend their exile once a year for a pilgrimage through forests and fields to the homes they left behind. Coming to know Ausma and the trauma of her exile to Siberia under Stalin, Inara pieces together Livija’s survival through years as a refugee. Weaving these two parts of the family story together in spellbinding, lyrical prose, she gives us a profound and cathartic account of loss, survival, resilience, and love.
