Kosher Chinese written by Michael Levy and has been published by Holt Paperbacks this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-05 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

An irreverent tale of an American Jew serving in the Peace Corps in rural China, which reveals the absurdities, joys, and pathos of a traditional society in flux In September of 2005, the Peace Corps sent Michael Levy to teach English in the heart of China's heartland. His hosts in the city of Guiyang found additional uses for him: resident expert on Judaism, romantic adviser, and provincial basketball star, to name a few. His account of overcoming vast cultural differences to befriend his students and fellow teachers is by turns poignant and laugh-out-loud funny. While reveling in the peculiarities of life in China's interior, the author also discovered that the "other billion" (people living far from the coastal cities covered by the American media) have a complex relationship with both their own traditions and the rapid changes of modernization. Lagging behind in China's economic boom, they experience the darker side of "capitalism with Chinese characteristics," daily facing the schizophrenia of conflicting ideologies. Kosher Chinese is an illuminating account of the lives of the residents of Guiyang, particularly the young people who will soon control the fate of the world.

My China – Living inside the Dragon is a compelling memoir that details the author’s fifteen years of living, working, and travelling in China at a pivotal time in the country’s development. Readers will find this work to be as insightful as it is entertaining. Living in China away from large expatriate communities, both through business activities, in private life and supplemented by travel around much of the country, the author was exposed to the wide-ranging variety of Chinese culture and its differing geographical influences. These included the ways and the lifestyle of the Chinese people, with those personal observations and opinions reflected in this book. This critique is widely varied in content from daily routines to a view on the more sophisticated aspects of society with all its complexities, seen through the eyes of a foreigner. Containing credible personal views including extracts from detailed personal diary notes written during this extraordinary period of China’s truly historic growth and evolution. This transformation period during the early part of this century (2002-2017) laid the foundations for its current wealth, successes, and a platform for its continual drive towards achieving its future ambitions.

Social Media In Industrial China written by Xinyuan Wang and has been published by UCL Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-13 with Social Science categories.

Life outside the mobile phone is unbearable.’ Lily, 19, factory worker. Described as the biggest migration in human history, an estimated 250 million Chinese people have left their villages in recent decades to live and work in urban areas. Xinyuan Wang spent 15 months living among a community of these migrants in a small factory town in southeast China to track their use of social media. It was here she witnessed a second migration taking place: a movement from offline to online. As Wang argues, this is not simply a convenient analogy but represents the convergence of two phenomena as profound and consequential as each other, where the online world now provides a home for the migrant workers who feel otherwise ‘homeless’. Wang’s fascinating study explores the full range of preconceptions commonly held about Chinese people – their relationship with education, with family, with politics, with ‘home’ – and argues why, for this vast population, it is time to reassess what we think we know about contemporary China and the evolving role of social media.

China S Changing Workplace written by Peter Sheldon and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-15 with Business & Economics categories.

This book explores the diversity and dynamism of China’s workplaces and of the wider labour market experiences of its workforce. Drawing on the authors’ extensive recent research, it considers a diverse range of issues and types of workplaces. These changes include: the continuing spread of market-oriented human resource management across public and private sector organisations; greater employment rights for workers; local diversity in regulatory control alongside the governmental priority of a ‘harmonious society’; persistent shortages of skilled labour co-existing with vast underemployment amongst the unskilled; uneven access to education and training across regions; and changes in union behaviour and influence. Unlike other studies - which tend to assume changes to management, work and employment are relatively uniform across modernising parts of the economy - this book conveys the rich variety among contemporary China’s local labour markets by looking at them, and the institutions that influence them, from the bottom-up. It focuses on other under-explored but emerging phenomena such as family-owned firms, the role of private services businesses, and the emergence of employer associations.

Live Working Or Die Fighting written by Paul Mason and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-30 with History categories.

Globalisation has created a whole new working class - and they are reliving stories that were first played out a century ago. In Live Working or Die Fighting, Paul Mason tells the story of this new working class alongside the epic history of the global labour movement, from its formation in the factories of the 1800s through its near destruction by fascism in the 1930s and up to today's anti-globalisation movement. Blending exhilarating historical narrative with reportage from today's front line, he links the lives of 19th-century factory girls with the lives of teenagers in a giant Chinese mobile phone factory; he tells the story of how mass trade unions were born in London's Docklands - and how they're being reinvented by the migrant cleaners in skyscrapers that stand on the very same spot. It is a story of urban slums, self-help co-operatives, choirs and brass bands, free love and self-education by candlelight. And, as the author shows, in the developing industrial economies of the world it is still with us. Live Working or Die Fighting celebrates a common history of defiance, idealism and self-sacrifice, one as alive and active today as it was two hundred years ago. It is a unique and inspirational book.
