Native American folklore and mythology is rich with mystery and wisdom, and spiritually sacred stories echo through the centuries in the lives of indigenous North Americans. Many of these stories deal with crossing over between the world of the living to that of the dead-and back. Others feature animals or objects with supernatural powers, or ancestors that help guide or rescue souls lost in their own struggles for survival against the elements: A fearless Brule Sioux warrior encounters four ghosts determined to scare the wits out of him, but he turns the tables on them-and then encounters something even scarier than ghosts, the spirits of a Cherokee woman and her husband taunt the soul of their murderer for decades, Heavy Collar encounters a strange, frightening force that follows him home from a hunting trip and causes havoc in his Blackfoot camp, a young Assiniboine bride-to-be rides a great white stallion to avoid being killed in a Sioux raid; the supernatural spirit horse is seen riding the plains for centuries after, two Cheyenne children are chased across impossible stretches of territory by the rolling head of their murdered mother, Good Son tries to save his Navajo brother, the mischievious Bad Son, from the evil Spider Woman, but fails to fool her, the Phantom Horses of Palo Duro Canyon come to life for a young boy traveling with his Kiowa grandfather, a man and wife help a dead Sioux girl return to life, and she devotes the rest of her days to healing the sick... From cultures stretching back thousands of years to the earliest habitations on the continent, come mysterious, eerie tales that continue to resonate today. Book jacket.

Ghosts and other supernatural phenomena are widely represented throughout modern culture. They can be found in any number of entertainment, commercial, and other contexts, but popular media or commodified representations of ghosts can be quite different from the beliefs people hold about them, based on tradition or direct experience. Personal belief and cultural tradition on the one hand, and popular and commercial representation on the other, nevertheless continually feed each other. They frequently share space in how people think about the supernatural. In Haunting Experiences, three well-known folklorists seek to broaden the discussion of ghost lore by examining it from a variety of angles in various modern contexts. Diane E. Goldstein, Sylvia Ann Grider, and Jeannie Banks Thomas take ghosts seriously, as they draw on contemporary scholarship that emphasizes both the basis of belief in experience (rather than mere fantasy) and the usefulness of ghost stories. They look closely at the narrative role of such lore in matters such as socialization and gender. And they unravel the complex mix of mass media, commodification, and popular culture that today puts old spirits into new contexts.

Many stories involved fearsome creatures with supernatural powers. One of these creatures, now known as Bigfoot, passed beyond the realm of native lore and has become firmly entrenched in modern culture - for we too have seen this mysterious being. For countless ages before Europeans set foot in North America, native people inhabited the vast arctic regions, forests, deserts, and plains. They lived off the bountiful land, and developed unique cultures with stories of their heroes and adventures that have been passed down through successive generations. Many stories involved fearsome creatures with supernatural powers, believed to wander the land in a shadowy existence somewhere between reality and the unknown. One of these creatures, now known as Bigfoot, passed beyond the realm of native lore and has become firmly entrenched in modern culture - for we too have seen this mysterious being. Kathy Moskowitz Strain, a professional archaeologist and anthropologist with the U.S. Forest Service in California, presents in this volume a collection of verbatim stories from 55 native cultures that tell of giants, cannibals, and monsters in North America. We are taken to the campfires where such stories have been repeated for thousands of years by native elders and warriors. The work has been skillfully arranged with native culture profiles and hundreds of photographs of the respective native people in their various walks of life. Above all, this book is an adventure into the inner circles of our aboriginal people. It provides a unique insight into a part of their mythology, values, and spirituality. For those interested in this fascinating branch of human knowledge, this work is invaluable.

Ruskin bond once famously remarked that while he does not believe in ghosts, he sees them all the time - in the woods, in a bar, in a crowd outside a cinema. Not surprising, then, that in his stories ghosts, jinns, witches - and the occasional monster - ae as real as the people he writes about. He makes the supernatural appear entirely natural, and therefore harder to ignore. This collection brings together all of Ruskin Bond's tales of the paranormal written over five decades. It opens with perhaps his best-known story, the unforgettable, Á face in the dark', set in a pine forest outside Simla, and ends with the shockingly macabre 'Night of the Millennium', where the scene of the action is an abondoned cemetery. In between are tales featuring monkeys and a pack of dogs come back from the dead, an elderly lady who is a witch after dark, a schoolboy riding his bicycle up and down the country road where he was killed, and Kipling's ghost in London's Victoria and Albert Museum. comprising twenty-eight classic stories that range from the chilling to the whimsical for the supernatural has its funny side too, a face in the dark and other hauntings is the perfect collection to have by your bedside when the moon is up.
