In March, 1861, I commenced an expedition to discover the sources of the Nile, with the hope of meeting the East African expedition of Captains Speke and Grant, that had been sent by the English Government from the South via Zanzibar, for the same object. I had not the presumption to publish my intention, as the sources of the Nile had hitherto defied all explorers, but I had inwardly determined to accomplish this difficult task or to die in the attempt. From my youth I had been inured to hardships and endurance in wild sports in tropical climates, and when I gazed upon the map of Africa I had a wild hope, mingled with humility, that, even as the insignificant worm bores through the hardest oak, I might by perseverance reach the heart of Africa. I could not conceive that anything in this world has power to resist a determined will, so long as health and life remain. The failure of every former attempt to reach the Nile source did not astonish me, as the expeditions had consisted of parties, which, when difficulties occur, generally end in difference of opinion and in retreat; I therefore determined to proceed alone, trusting in the guidance of a Divine Providence and the good fortune that sometimes attends a tenacity of purpose. I weighed carefully the chances of the undertaking. Before me, untrodden Africa; against me, the obstacles that had defeated the world since its creation; on my side, a somewhat tough constitution, perfect independence, a long experience in savage life, and both time and means, which I intended to devote to the object without limit. England had never sent an expedition to the Nile sources previous to that under the command of Speke and Grant. Bruce, ninety years before, had succeeded in tracing the source of the Blue or Lesser Nile; thus the honor of that discovery belonged to Great Britain. Speke was on his road from the South, and I felt confident that my gallant friend would leave his bones upon the path rather than submit to failure. I trusted that England would not be beaten, and although I hardly dared to hope that I could succeed where others greater than I had failed, I determined to sacrifice all in the attempt.

The sixteen short stories in this anthology reflect some of the most pressing global issues of concern today. These stories have been carefully chosen to represent as many geographical regions of the world as possible. They address such concerns as: political leadership and politics of integration; terrorism and youth radicalisation; domestic violence, racial relations, sexuality and gender, the environment and environmental sustainability, religion and culture and globalisation. Some of the stories also give a social commentary on such aspects of life as family and social relationships. The stories are drawn from a diverse cadre of writers. There are stories from experienced and celebrated writers, others from upcoming writers and some from a new crop of writers. There are young as well not-so-young contributors. This gives the anthology both wealth in terms of style of writing and diversity of viewpoints and perspectives. A read through this anthology is like a walk across geopolitical borders, a peek into the varied cultures of the world and a dialogue with members of di erent generations, all culminating into one major realisation: we are one and we need each other. It is an enthralling read.

Designed to provide anyone with an interest in heart disease in Africa with an immediate sense of how the area is progressing from a clinical to research perspective in responding to this evolving epidemic Presents salient research uncovering the evolving burden of communicable and non-communicable forms of heart disease, Includes content on maternal heart disease, infant and childhood heart disease, risk and prevention, heart failure and other common forms of heart disease in rural and urban communities in Africa.

Learning to care for a baby monkey and a chameleon, growing giant vegetables, meeting Pygmies in the jungle, finding the source of the Nile that Davidson and Stanley once searched for, sleeping in the open of the Serengeti prairie, and hiking around the rim of a volcano were some of the rare activities that Marilyn Kellum Barr describes that she experienced while living in Burundi, Africa as she attended schools there and in Kenya in the 1960’s. In The Heart of Africa she reports that the native people of this tiny, mountainous agricultural land lived simply, valuing their family, their small plot of land, and their mud hut, while many found Jesus and worshiped Him with enthusiasm in the midst of poverty and government strife. Even though she had to eat foods she found abhorant, she loved the culture and challenges of central Africa as her parents reached out to the people and worked with native leaders to begin a Christian radio station. Through God’s grace and the hard work of many Christians, Radio Cordac opened to air the gospel in five languages, also providing a school where Burundian students could learn electronics, recording techniques, and other relevant skills while working alongside other missionaries. While the station is now closed and missionaries are no longer allowed in the country, she shares reports from family members who have returned more recently on short-term visas that faithful Christians abound in this country and that a Christian radio station still offers the people spiritual hope even though electricity and running water are not available to rural people.
