Using monuments and ruins by way of illustration, this fascinating book examines the symbolic, ideological, geographical and aesthetic importance of Greek classical iconography for the Western world. It examines how classical Greek monuments are simultaneously perceived as sublime national symbols and as a mythological and archetypal reference against which Western modernism is measured. The book investigates the dialogue this double identity leads to, as well as frequent clashes between ancient (but also later) monuments and their modern urban or regional environment. Living Ruins, Value Conflicts examines the complex historical process of monument restoration and enhancement, and analyses the nexus of changing perceptions, aesthetic visions and formal principles over the past two centuries. The book shows the ways in which archaeology and monumentality affect modern life, the modern aesthetic, our notions of nationhood, of place, of self - and the limits to and possibilities for national development imposed by the need to ensure ruins are kept 'alive'.

Funeral monuments are fascinating and diverse cultural relics that continue to captivate visitors to English churches, yet we still know relatively little about the messages they attempt to convey across the centuries. This book is a study of the material culture of memory in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England. By interpreting the images and inscriptions on monuments to the dead, it explores how early modern people wanted to be remembered - their social vision, cultural ideals, religious beliefs and political values. Arguing that early modern English monuments were not simply formulaic statements about death and memory, Dr Sherlock instead reveals them to be deliberately crafted messages to future generations. Through careful reading of monuments he shows that much can be learned about how men and women conceived of the world around them and shifting concepts of gender, social order and the place of humans within the universe. In post-Reformation England, the dead became superior to the living, as monuments trumpeted their fame and their confidence in the resurrection. This study aims to stimulate historians to attempt to reconstruct and engage with the world view of past generations through the unique and under-utilised medium of funeral monuments. In so doing it is hoped that more light may be shed on how memory was created, controlled and contested in pre-modern society, and encourage the on-going debate about the ways in which understandings of the past shape the present and future.

"Living ShUM Monuments" is a pictorial edition documenting the most prominent remaining and newly constructed memorials of the region's present day Jewish heritage in central Germany. The text is written in both English and French languages.Originating from the tenth century, the middle Rhine River cities of Mainz, Worms and Speyer would establish some of the earliest Jewish colonies documented in Central and Eastern Europe. The three communities created a unique cultural cluster that influenced the religion, architecture, scholarship and administrative justice of the era, the Ashkenazi Diaspora.The ShUM community name was coined from the initial letters of Speyer, Worms and Mainz in Hebrew. During an ancient assembly in 1223, the legal status was affirmed.Globally Jewish communities and particularly the ShUM have historically endured persecution, dispersal and unfounded blame for historical calamities including the pestilence that decimated Europe during the Middle Ages. They have survived the ravages of mob violence, religious intolerance and grinding ignorance that has pervaded civilization despite eras of educational and artistic enlightenment.Throughout all, notable ShUM monuments have endured. Most have undergone massive renovations and even recreations for the present living. The historical resilience of the ShUM has been coupled by contemporary innovation.
