Il rilievo montuoso dei Colli Albani, a sud est di Roma, è stato capillarmente indagato sia nel passato sia durante la supervisione scientifica svolta dalle Soprintendenze territoriali in occasione delle moderne attività edilizie. Unendo i dati già noti con i risultati delle recenti campagne archeologiche, è stata sviluppata una ricerca focalizzata sullo specifico aspetto delle vie di comunicazione e sulle dinamiche insediative lungo le pendici occidentali del cratere Albano. La geomorfologia è stata utilizzata come chiave di lettura per comprendere meglio quali fossero le caratteristiche fisiche che più hanno condizionato le varie forme di sfruttamento del territorio. A tal fine, sovrapponendo le evidenze archeologiche così individuate alla carta geomorfologica, le aree intorno alle linee di crinale del cratere sono risultate essere le più ricettive allo sfruttamento e quindi alla modificazione da parte delle comunità. In particolare, i punti di intersezione tra crinali radiali e concentrici al cratere si sono rivelati di maggiore impatto, come descritto nei casi studio individuati in località Marcandreola (Ciampino, Roma). In questi sono emerse successive fasi di sfruttamento della rotta più importante dell'area, su cui si sviluppa la cosiddetta via Castrimeniense, testimonianze di attività vulcanica in età storica e un'intensa attività di culto. L'analisi dei dati ha portato a ridisegnare il graduale sfruttamento di questo territorio prima della sua conquista da parte di Roma. The Colli Albani is a region close to Rome that has been extensively investigated both in the past and during the scientific supervision of the Superintendency, often preceding modern building activities. Combining data from recent excavation campaigns and legacy data, this research focuses on the specific topics of the communication routes and settlement dynamics on the western slopes of the Alban crater. Geomorphology has been used as a key to better understand the morphological features that most influenced the use of the territory by the human communities. To this end, known archaeological remains were superimposed onto the geomorphological map revealing how human activity is most intense near and on the volcanic ridges. Moreover, the intersections between radial and concentric ridges appear of major importance, as is clear from two cases study sites in the Marcandreola area (Ciampino, Rome). Here, several use-phases of the most important route in the area, as the so-called via Castrimeniense, traces of volcanic activity in historical times, and intensive cult activity, were identified. From this it has been possible to redraw the gradual exploitation of this territory before it was conquered by Rome.

Dieci anni fa si celebrava il Quarantennale della Rivista con un numero speciale, un’occasione di riflessione su quanto si era fatto e su come la disciplina si era sviluppata, il tutto visto attraverso la storia di un periodico che ne aveva accompagnato il percorso fin dai primi passi. Il volume affrontava criticamente alcuni tematismi che, in un approccio essenzialmente di tipo storico-culturale, avevano attratto l’interesse dei ricercatori nel nostro Paese e, nel contempo, tentava possibili collegamenti con gli sviluppi dell’archeologia italiana ed europea, cogliendone criticità e punti di forza. Un volume che dunque era un bilancio sul passato, ma anche un possibile ponte verso il futuro. Dopo un decennio, in occasione dei Cinquanta anni della Rivista (gli anniversari restano numeri se non si coglie l’opportunità, che offrono, di un avanzamento critico), la Rivista pubblica un monografico dedicato al rapporto tra l’archeologia medievale e le “scienze dure”, dunque lo fa inserendosi in uno spazio che, forse più di altri, ha segnato in forme innovative la base epistemologica delle nostre ricerche. Ma non si tratta di un’eccezione, perché la Rivista, negli ultimi dieci anni, ha spesso promosso e pubblicato numeri monografici che hanno variamente intercettato e sviluppato temi di attualità: da quelli molto settoriali ma che affrontavano le potenzialità di nuove fonti (ad esempio il numero sulle anfore altomedievali); ad altri più vicini al mainstream storico ma letto attraverso una nuova lente archeologica (il numero sulla congiuntura del Trecento); ad altri, ancora, che tentavano un ripensamento del rapporto tra le archeologie post-antiche e il passato nelle loro più diverse declinazioni, inserendosi peraltro in un filone, oggi forse un po’ troppo alla moda, come quello dell’“archeologia pubblica” (pensiamo al numero su archeologia medievale ed identità). In sostanza, crediamo che la Rivista, oltre ad accogliere quanto di meglio le veniva offerto dalla ricerca nazionale, abbia saputo individuare e sviluppare percorsi autonomi e per certi versi originali, di cogliere quanto di innovativo maturava nell’ambito delle archeologie internazionali e cercare di tradurlo in proposte che guardassero ad un’archeologia del futuro svincolata dalle pastoie in cui è ancora confinata buona parte della nostra tradizione nazionale. Archeologia Medievale, in tutti questi anni, ha mantenuto il suo titolo “tipicamente accademico” ma anche il sottotitolo (Cultura materiale. Insediamenti. Territorio) che, fin dagli inizi, marcava un chiaro spazio autonomo ed originale di ricerca in ambito archeologico. La temperie culturale in cui era nata, la prima metà degli anni ’70, spiega molto di quel titolo e di quegli orientamenti, ma se la rigidità di certe posizioni ideologiche si è nel tempo mitigata e l’archeologia sembra giustamente andare oltre i confini cronologici nei quali è ancora accademicamente inserita, quel sottotitolo, nell’indicare un metodo e uno specifico spazio d’azione, resta ancora pienamente d’attualità […]

The last half century has seen an explosion in the study of late antiquity, which has characterised the period between the third and seventh centuries not as one of catastrophic collapse and ‘decline and fall’, but rather as one of dynamic and positive transformation. Yet research on cities in this period has provoked challenges to this positive picture of late antiquity. This study surveys the nature of this debate, examining problems associated with the sources historians use to examine late antique urbanism, and the discourses and methodological approaches they have constructed from them.
