The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over seven million people in the US alone suffer from severe vision loss or blindness. In the past, low vision was truly a life-altering condition. Those seemingly everyday tasks that were once so simple instead became difficult--whether one had to work, cook, read, drive, go out to shop, or even turn on a light switch, one's world had been completely turned upside down.. Today, however, things have begun to change. With the revolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) already underway, many of the major barriers caused by diminished or fully lost vision have been lessened or completely eliminated. In Low Vision Matters, authors Laura Stevens and Thomas Blackman provide a comprehensive guide to all the aids and equipment now available--along with important practical advice--to those who are vision-challenged. The book is divided into two parts. Part One focuses on the day-to-day activities that low vision can affect--from safety in your home or traveling outside, to the handling of finances or one's home entertainment system. It discusses the latest technologies that can enable a person with eyesight problems to turn on a light, start a dishwasher, or even answer a phone through the use of oral commands--and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Part Two then provides a breakdown of the various kinds of helpful vision-aid products now available. Because the authors understand the costs involved in purchasing such equipment, they include the names of those organizations and associations in an extensive Resources section along with various other crucial contacts about which those with low vision and their loved ones and caretakers need to know. Times have t changed. Low Vision Matters provides a wealth of information that can vastly improve the daily life of a person living with vision loss or blindness. .

When You Can T Believe Your Eyes written by Hannah Fairbairn and has been published by Charles C Thomas Publisher this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-05 with Education categories.

This book was first projected in 2004, when Author Hannah Fairbairn was teaching interpersonal skills at the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, Massachusetts. The experiences of her adult students—and her own experience of sight lost—convinced her that everyone losing vision needs access to good information about the process of adjustment to losing sight and practical ways to use assertive speech. When You Can’t Believe Your Eyes is intended for anyone going through vision loss, their friends, and families. It will inform readers how to get expert professional help, face the trauma of loss, and navigate the world using speech more than sight. Each of the twelve chapters in the book contain many short sections and bullet-point lists, intended to facilitate access to the right information. It begins where you begin—at the doctor’s office or the hospital. Since vision loss takes many forms, there are suggestions for questions you might ask to get a clear diagnosis and the best treatment. Part One also has a description of legal blindness and possible prevention, advice about your job, and tips for life at home. Part Two is about believing in yourself as you deal with the loss, the anger, and the fear before you come up for air and consider training. Parts Three and Four describe using assertive speech and action in all kinds of settings as your independence and confidence increase. Part Five gives detailed information about everything from dating, and caring for babies to senior living, volunteering, and retaining your job. It is hoped that by reading and trying out the suggestions, the reader will recover full confidence, become a positive, assertive communicator, and lead a satisfying life. Because vision loss happens mostly in older years, the book is written with seniors particularly in mind. Professionals will also find it to be a useful resource for their patients.

"Know thyself," says Socrates. But humankind tends to ignore human nature, choosing instead to politicalize (escape) thyself. But humankind is turning in on himself (ourself), and like it or not, in time we will be forced by necessity (the dynamic pattern of our own behavior) to meet our Lord (innermost Being), and know thyself as Life-Death, a Spirit-Matter Continuum (one Adam)--or perish altogether. The author offers a philosophical companion to his previous book of poetry The Heart Speaks. 86 pages, consisting of an introduction, 4 chapters, 3 poems and 12 articles on living faith.

Living Vision 7 spent two hours engaging with people in Farmington, New Mexico one evening, asking people to share their vision of the world--how does the world they want to live in look, how does it feel to live in that world? Again and again, we heard a yearning for acceptance and belonging, a deep desire for peace and safety, and vivid descriptions of a world of natural abundance. These stories and moments of connection were so powerful, Living Vision 7 expanded this project to extend over 35 days. By directly engaging with the communities where Living Vision 7 group members live, and beyond that to the world at large They asked 17,777 people about their visions of the world. These visions inspired the creation of four art installations in Southwest Colorado and northern New Mexico, as well as the compilation of this book. This book celebrate what's possible with portraits, illustrations, and the words of visionaries. By bringing to light the visions we carry in our hearts, we get to live our dreams.
