MANY roads across open commons or elevated slopes converge towards the oldworld town of Llantwit Major, built in a sheltered hollow near the wild Glamorganshire coast. Before entering the scattered village the traveller catches a glimpse of a fine ruined mansion, and after descending the hill, through narrow streets, between whitewashed cottages and fragments of old houses, he finds himself in a little square, with a gabled inn, some five hundred years old, on his right, while a plain building with a belfry faces him. This ancient building is now used as a town hall, and the bell bears the inscription 'Sancte Iltute, ora pro nobis.' Not far from this building is the elongated pile of Local authorities believe that the bell now in the belfry is the original bell of the saint, with which are connected many legends. However, the size, form, and inscription at once convince us that this bell was cast at a later period when the name of Illtyd had become reverenced. (See Arch. Cam., 1848, p.236.) the great church. Professor Freeman, in an able paper written for the Archczologia Cambrensis, says: ' The whole series of buildings at Llantwit Major is one of the most striking in the kingdom. Through a succession of civil and domestic structures of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the traveller gradually approaches the grand group composed of the church and the buildings attached to it. Lying as they do in a deep valley below the town, they present a miniature representation of the unequalled assemblage at St. David's?
