La potenza della bellezza è qualcosa di grande luminoso, ma anche tenebroso, oscuro in un continuo rapporto tra Apollo e Dioniso, elevazione ed ottundimento della mente. In questo rapporto ambiguo che ferisce ma al contempo consola ed eleva verso il cielo e lo spirituale, vi è la forza ultima della bellezza. Vi sono tuttavia epoche come l'attuale dove la bellezza viene talvolta appiattita sulla banalità, se non sulla volgarità, un incolore che la riduce alla superficiale percezione esterna, in una perdita di senso del soggetto. Nell'involgarimento vi è il suo svuotamento, ossia la riduzione al puro aspetto materiale del consumo, dove si perde la sua capacità di elevare l'anima al mistero della divinità, all'intuizione dell'assoluto, la parola perde la sua forza creativa. This volume discusses infirmitas (’infirmity’ or ’weakness’) in ancient and medieval societies. It concentrates on the cultural, social and domestic aspects of physical and mental illness, impairment and health, and also examines frailty as a more abstract, cultural construct. Un-Roman Sex explores how gender and sex were perceived and represented outside the Mediterranean core of the Roman Empire. The volume critically explores the gender constructs and sexual behaviours in the provinces and frontiers in light of recent studies of Roman erotic experience and flux gender identities. At its core, it challenges the unproblematised extension of the traditional Romano-Hellenistic model to the provinces and frontiers. Did sexual relations and gender identities undergo processes of "provincialisation" or "barbarisation" similar to other well-known aspects of cultural negotiation and syncretism in provincial and border regions, for example in art and religion? The 11 chapters that make up the volume explore these issues from a variety of angles, providing a balanced and rounded view through use of literary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence.
