Repräsentationen sozialer Ungleichheiten in Literatur und Film werfen die Frage auf, wer was wie darstellt – eine Problematik, die sich für Narrative, Fiktionen und Figurationen wie für die analytischen Betrachtung von Mediendarstellungen und öffentlichen Diskursen gleichermaßen stellt. Schon die traditionelle Literatur, die immer auch als ein Archiv sozialer Erfahrung aufgefasst werden kann, unterliegt stilistischen, thematischen und genretypischen Bindungen, die epochenweise unterlaufen oder konterkariert wurden. Allerdings verraten die Zugangsbedingungen zu Bildung sowie zu kanonischer Literaturproduktion und -rezeption auch in der Moderne sowie der jüngsten Gegenwart soziale Ungleichheiten. In diesem Kontext erweisen sich einschlägige Beispiele der jüngeren Literatur- und Filmproduktion als äußerst reflektiert. Nicht nur werden Fragen von Kanonisierung oder Populärkultur aufgegriffen, auch werden neue Ausdrucksweisen erprobt und Genregrenzen ausgetestet.
