With the help of a line item budget from a feasibility study, local economic impacts of construction and annual airport operations were quantified. As is the case with any major infrastructure development, the regional economy is positively impacted as construction activities are conducted. Analysis also shows that positive economic effects could be the result of the annual airport operations. To substantiate the sustainability of airport operations, a cluster analysis was conducted to identify possibilities for industry clusters in the area. Results showed that clustering will only serve to increase the local economic impact of airport operations; further justifying the large public investment.

Today airports are increasingly becoming full transport junctions. The location of their networks provides strategic benefits, which makes them possible to attract a wide range of economic activities, therefore to operate as new development poles. Nowadays it is widely accepted that the airports of Europe have considerable economic and social impacts on the surrounding regions. These impacts reach much deeper than the direct impacts an airport has on the environment of its operation, since the availability of air services are advantageous both for the regional business interests and for the consumers. Air transport means a fundamental infrastructural background, which facilitates the economic growth of the regions; furthermore, the global accessibility is one of the key factors of being successful in terms of the settlement of business activities and for every region in Europe. The primary aim of the study is the theoretical review of the impacts of airports on economy. In addition, the study makes an attempt to review and analyse the international benchmark examples developed for the analysis of the economic impacts of airports. Based on the international literature, the methods and procedures are identified which are theoretically suitable for the economic impact study of airports. Afterwards, the procedures are selected of which the methodological clarity is suitable to found the empirical study of the impacts of an optional airport on the local economy.

Regional Catalytic Economic Impacts And Noise Damage Costs Of Aviation Growth written by Ryan Aung Min Tam and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with categories.

There is growing recognition that transportation or infrastructure improvements can have longer-term catalytic impacts economic productivity, which are in addition to the direct, indirect, or induced household spending impacts. These economic catalytic effects are fundamentally different from traditional measures of the impacts from spending in the air transport sector. In contrast to the generally positive regional economic benefits of aviation, however, aircraft noise has emerged as a major negative externality of the air transportation system and continues to be a controversial issue in communities around airports. In this analysis, I develop a methodology to highlight interrelationships between airport flight operations and noise impacts on surrounding communities, and between air transport industry and regional economic growth. I calculate the noise-damage costs under different airport growth scenarios at London Heathrow and the East Midlands airport, and then apply an econometric input-output model to estimate the regional catalytic economic impacts associated with the growth of the air transport industry under these same scenarios. I find that the local airport noise damages are very small compared to the regional economic impacts from aviation. Furthermore, I find that the wider catalytic economic impacts due to increased productivity and accessibility are greater than the economic impacts from aviation sector itself at the regional level.

Airport economic impact studies may accurately measure the activity that occurs on airport properties or is tied directly to airport operations (such as off-site parking and hotels that accommodate airline crew who overnight in a location), but they do not capture how air service supports business and employment throughout the region. The TRB Airport Cooperative Research Program's ACRP Web-Only Document 53: Measuring and Understanding the Relationship Between Air Service and Regional Economic Development provides airports and major regional stakeholders concerned with economic development with the information and tools necessary to understand and communicate the nexus between air service and regional employment. The Web-Only Document is supplemental to ACRP WebResource 12: Air Service Development and Regional Economic Activity. Supplemental to the Web-Only Document is a Case Study Compilation with the full versions of the 14 case studies performed as part of the project.
