Radio systems capable of localization have emerging applications in homeland security, law enforcement, emergency response, defense command and control, multi-robot coordination and vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian collision avoidance. In fact, high resolution localization is vital for many applications, including: traffic alert, emergency services, e.g., indoor localization for firefighters, and battlefield command and control. These systems promise to dramatically reduce society's vulnerabilities to catastrophic events and improve its quality of of life. While work this important area is progressing, limited resources are available to support graduate students and researchers in this important area. Specifically, a limited number of books has been published in this area covering selected subjects. This comprehensive handbook offers gaps of available localization books presenting in-depth coverage from fundamentals of coordinates to advanced application examples.

Advances in electronic location technology and the coming of age of mobile computing have opened the door for location-aware applications to permeate all aspects of everyday life. Location is at the core of a large number of high-value applications ranging from the life-and-death context of emergency response to serendipitous social meet-ups. For example, the market for GPS products and services alone is expected to grow to US$200 billion by 2015. Unfortunately, there is no single location technology that is good for every situation and exhibits high accuracy, low cost, and universal coverage. In fact, high accuracy and good coverage seldom coexist, and when they do, it comes at an extreme cost. Instead, the modern localization landscape is a kaleidoscope of location systems based on a multitude of different technologies including satellite, mobile telephony, 802.11, ultrasound, and infrared among others. This lecture introduces researchers and developers to the most popular technologies and systems for location estimation and the challenges and opportunities that accompany their use. For each technology, we discuss the history of its development, the various systems that are based on it, and their trade-offs and their effects on cost and performance. We also describe technology-independent algorithms that are commonly used to smooth streams of location estimates and improve the accuracy of object tracking. Finally, we provide an overview of the wide variety of application domains where location plays a key role, and discuss opportunities and new technologies on the horizon. Table of Contents: Introduction / The Global Positioning System / Infrared and Ultrasonic Systems / Location Esimation with 802.11 / Cellular-Based Systems / Other Approaches / Improving Localization Accuracy / Location-Based Applications and Services / Challenges and Opportunities / References

Localization is a fundamental technology embedded -- often unbeknownst to users -- in many devices and services. First, this book reveals how localization systems are driving modern society. The core focus of the book is on the Global Positioning System (GPS), which is constantly rising in importance due to its global availability and low receiver cost. Still, high energy consumption and susceptibility to fake or reflected signals are challenges which GPS receivers face today. The limited endurance of battery-powered GPS receivers is addressed by snapshot receivers which require as little as one millisecond of received satellite signals to determine their position. Using short signals reduces the active time and thus the energy consumption of the GPS receiver drastically. But due to the short signals, the relative strength of the received signal to the noise is reduced, which impairs the localization robustness. The Collective Detection maximum likelihood method performs well with such short signals. Furthermore, a tiny and low power snapshot GPS receiver hardware design is given, which allows position tracking for months or years using a coin cell. Spoofed GPS satellite signals pose a threat to an increasing number of critical systems relying on GPS. Determining multiple most likely positioning solutions instead of only one allows finding the correct receiver location despite the presence of malicious signals. Finally, an experimental localization system is presented that leverages status messages transmitted by aircraft. It aims at combining the ubiquitous availability and low receiver cost of GPS with the high signal strength of local positioning systems like those based on WiFi or LTE signals. As such, it gives the prospect of robust and possibly indoor localization without the high setup costs of short-range positioning systems. This book is suitable for readers with a technical background, but no prior knowledge of localization systems. Readers familiar with GPS can skip the introductory chapters and directly dive into the advanced material.
