What do the classification of algebraic surfaces, Weyl's dimension formula and maximal orders in central simple algebras have in common? All are related to a type of manifold called locally mixed symmetric spaces in this book. The presentation emphasizes geometric concepts and relations and gives each reader the "roter Faden", starting from the basics and proceeding towards quite advanced topics which lie at the intersection of differential and algebraic geometry, algebra and topology. Avoiding technicalities and assuming only a working knowledge of real Lie groups, the text provides a wealth of examples of symmetric spaces. The last two chapters deal with one particular case (Kuga fiber spaces) and a generalization (elliptic surfaces), both of which require some knowledge of algebraic geometry. Of interest to topologists, differential or algebraic geometers working in areas related to arithmetic groups, the book also offers an introduction to the ideas for non-experts.

The Zamolodchikov c-theorem has led to important new insights in the understanding of the Renormalisation Group (RG) and the geometry of the space of QFTs. The present primer introduces and reviews the parallel developments of the search for a higher-dimensional generalisation of the c-theorem and of the Local RG (LRG). The idea of renormalisation with position-dependent couplings, running under local Weyl scaling, is traced from its early realisations to the elegant modern formalism of the LRG. The key rôle of the associated Weyl consistency conditions in establishing RG flow equations for the coefficients of the trace anomaly in curved spacetime, and their relation to the c-theorem and four-dimensional a-theorem, is explained in detail. A number of different derivations of the c-theorem in two dimensions are presented and subsequently generalised to four dimensions. The obstructions to establishing monotonic C-functions related to the trace anomaly coefficients in four dimensions are explained. The possibility of deriving an a-theorem for the coefficient of the Euler-Gauss-Bonnet density is explored, initially by formulating the QFT on maximally symmetric spaces. Then the formulation of the weak a-theorem using a dispersion relation for four-point functions is presented. Finally, the application of the LRG to the issue of limit cycles in theories with a global symmetry is described, shedding new light on the geometry of the space of couplings in QFT.

The second edition has been adapted, expanded, and aptly retitled from Lee’s earlier book, Riemannian Manifolds: An Introduction to Curvature. In geometry, for instance, general theorems and properties will also hold for homogeneous spaces, and will usually be easier to understand and to prove in this setting. For Lie groups, a significant amount of analysis either begins with or reduces to analysis on homogeneous spaces, frequently on symmetric spaces. For many years and for many mathematicians, Sigurdur Helgason's classic Differential Geometry, Lie Groups, and Symmetric Spaces has been—and continues to be—the standard source for this material. Helgason begins with a concise, self-contained introduction to differential geometry. Next is a careful treatment of the foundations of the theory of Lie groups, presented in a manner that since 1962 has served as a model to a number of subsequent authors. This sets the stage for the introduction and study of symmetric spaces, which form the central part of the book. This book outlines a functorial theory of integral models of (mixed) Shimura varieties and of their toroidal compactifications, for odd primes of good reduction. This is the integral version, developed in the author's thesis, of the theory invented by Deligne and Pink in the rational case. In addition, the author develops a theory of arithmetic Chern classes of integral automorphic vector bundles with singular metrics using the work of Burgos, Kramer and Kühn. The main application is calculating arithmetic volumes or "heights" of Shimura varieties of orthogonal type using Borcherds' famous modular forms with their striking product formula--an idea due to Bruinier-Burgos-Kühn and Kudla. This should be seen as an Arakelov analogue of the classical calculation of volumes of orthogonal locally symmetric spaces by Siegel and Weil. In the latter theory, the volumes are related to special values of (normalized) Siegel Eisenstein series. In this book, it is proved that the Arakelov analogues are related to special derivatives of such Eisenstein series. This result gives substantial evidence in the direction of Kudla's conjectures in arbitrary dimensions. The validity of the full set of conjectures of Kudla, in turn, would give a conceptual proof and far-reaching generalizations of the work of Gross and Zagier on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. Titles in this series are co-published with the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques.

The aim of this book is to provide an overview of some of the progress made by the Spanish Network of Geometric Analysis (REAG, by its Spanish acronym) since its born in 2007. REAG was created with the objective of enabling the interchange of ideas and the knowledge transfer between several Spanish groups having Geometric Analysis as a common research line. This includes nine groups at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad de Granada, Universidad Jaume I de Castellón, Universidad de Murcia, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and Universidad de Valencia. The success of REAG has been substantiated with regular meetings and the publication of research papers obtained in collaboration between the members of different nodes. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of REAG this book aims to collect some old and new contributions of this network to Geometric Analysis. The book consists of thirteen independent chapters, all of them authored by current members of REAG. The topics under study cover geometric flows, constant mean curvature surfaces in Riemannian and sub-Riemannian spaces, integral geometry, potential theory and Riemannian geometry, among others. Some of these chapters have been written in collaboration between members of different nodes of the network, and show the fruitfulness of the common research atmosphere provided by REAG. The rest of the chapters survey a research line or present recent progresses within a group of those forming REAG. Surveying several research lines and offering new directions in the field, the volume is addressed to researchers (including postdocs and PhD students) in Geometric Analysis in the large.
