The ways in which humans interact with their location is an important topic within sociological studies of religion. It is integral to the place of religion in secular society. 'The Location of Religion: A Spatial Analysis' offers an overview of the ways in which religion can be located within social, cultural and physical space. It examines contemporary spatial theory - notably the work of the influential sociologist Henri Lefebvre - and the many disciplines that have contributed to the spatial study of religion. This volume will be invaluable to all those interested in the role of religion in spatial analysis.

Tracing the Way is the product of a lifetime of experience. In researching and compiling this book Hans Kung has travelled to every corner of the globe in search of God in his many guises. Kung casts an analytical eye over the major world religions and offers a view of the present and what that means when measured against the past. Kung surveys, as succinctly as possible, the historical stages of each world religion and analyses their major paradigms and paradigm shifts. For the present can be understood only in the light of constellations from the past which have persisted side by side with each other. Tracing the Way attempts to understand the religions, in both text and pictures, as objectively as possible and discusses the social, political and historical contexts of the many forms of belief that exist today.

Rethinking Religion written by Barbara O'Brien and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-20 with Religion categories.

Does religion have something positive to offer the 21st century (and beyond)? Or is it a vestige of the Iron Age that ought to be contained in museums, preferably under bell jars? More critically, is it even possible to be religious and also be a rational and entirely modern participant in 21st-century civilization? Is it possible to live a devotional, religious life today without denying science or otherwise being assimilated by some religious-authoritarian Borg? Rethinking Religion argues that today's clown-shoes religiosity is an infantile caricature of religion that the great theologians, scholars, saints and sages of the past wouldn't recognize as religion at all. Religion may be salvageable, and may even be beneficial, but only if we can rediscover what it is and how to make use of it. Rethinking Religion is a proposal for how we might do that. This book is not written from any one sectarian position. The author was raised Christian in the Bible Belt, but she has been a formal student of Soto Zen Buddhism for many years and is currently the expert on Buddhism for the reference website About.com. The perspectives in Rethinking Religion apply to all the world's religious great religious traditions - Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and the rest of them. The author also is supportive of atheism and does not think everyone has to be religious. Along the way, the author explains why Christian megachurches turn Christ into McJesus; why being "spiritual but not religious" may not be a good idea; why Buddhists in Sri Lanka and Burma (Myanmar) are turning violent; and why people join cults and believe ridiculous things. This book also challenges assumptions - why "faith" is not the same as "belief"; why some atheists aren't nearly skeptical enough; why "reality" may not be what you think it is; why morality doesn't have to be tied to religion; and why there may be a God, but if so, God isn't God - or at least, any God you can imagine. Today, most of the ongoing violent conflicts around the globe have a connection to religion. Recent studies reveal that religion-based violence is on the rise, in fact. In many ways religion has become a millstone around humanity's neck, holding us back from our potential to live in peace and harmony and enjoy the blessings of science. Rethinking Religion will show you that it doesn't have to be this way, and argues that enlightened religion is the most effective weapon against oppressive and stupid religion.

Sacred Stories Spiritual Tribes written by Nancy Tatom Ammerman and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-12 with Social Science categories.

Nancy Tatom Ammerman examines the stories Americans tell of their everyday lives, from dinner table to office and shopping mall to doctor's office, about the things that matter most to them and the routines they take for granted, and the times and places where the everyday and ordinary meet the spiritual. In addition to interviews and observation, Ammerman bases her findings on a photo elicitation exercise and oral diaries, offering a window into the presence and absence of religion and spirituality in ordinary lives and in ordinary physical and social spaces. The stories come from a diverse array of ninety-five Americans -- both conservative and liberal white Protestants, African American Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Wiccans, and people who claim no religious or spiritual proclivities -- across a range that stretches from committed religious believers to the spiritually neutral. Ammerman surveys how these people talk about what spirituality is, how they seek and find experiences they deem spiritual, and whether and how religious traditions and institutions are part of their spiritual lives.

Theology Of Religions written by Eugene F. Gorski and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Religion categories.

What should Catholics and indeed all followers of Jesus think about the other great religions of the world: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Daoism, Sikhism, Shinto? Might it be that the one true God is operative in these other religions, working out the divine plan of salvation? Or are they hindrances to God's plan? What, in fact, is the relationship of Christianity to the other religions? These are some of the questions dealt with in this book. On the basis of an historical and phenomenological study of the world religions, this book examines what the scriptures, tradition, and the teaching of the Catholic Church have to say about the ultimate meaning and value of the non-Christian religions, and how Catholics are to relate to the adherents of the other religions with understanding and appreciation. Locating the historical origins of the world religions, tracing their historical development, observing the experiential phenomena from which they arise, seeking to identify elements that unify them, as well as pondering the questions that become evident as the result of such a study--these procedures of historical and phenomenological analysis deal with issues of great significance and facilitate the author's search for, and interpretation of, the strictly theological data that disclose the ultimate significance of the non-Christian religions. Readers will appreciate this comprehensive work that reflects, from a Christian-Catholic point of view, on the ultimate meaning and value of the non-Christian religions, emphasizing how they may relate to the adherents of the other religions with understanding and appreciation. They will also understand more deeply the reality of Jesus, the Father, and the Spirit as a result of their dialogue with religious pluralism. +
