Locating Values in Literature: Goodness, Beauty, and Truth discusses the relevance of literature in the current educational process, stating that regardless of the level of study, literature provides students with the necessary skills to address real-world situations. Corina-Mihaela Beleaua posits that a curriculum that includes literature has a multitude of benefits for the mental and ethical development of students, defending the relevance of the three ancient values of goodness, beauty, and truth. Beleaua argues that literature is a significant tool for endorsing these transcendentals and actualizing their positive potentials as humanistic and moral values, acting as a symbolic manifestation of moral values that will impact readers outside of the scope of the literature itself. Scholars of literature, philosophy, and education will find this book particularly useful.

Alongside the recent cultural turn in the humanities, there has been a noticeable return to ethical considerations. With regard to literature as well as other media, this has rekindled awareness of a tension, antagonism, or even disparity between ethics and aesthetics. This volume of articles takes a more systematic and cross-disciplinary approach to the widely mooted ethical turn in literature and other media than has been pursued so far. It brings together a wide range of critical perspectives from literary studies, media and cultural memory studies, and philosophy, tracing the complex and sometimes conflicting relationship between ethics and aesthetics in theoretical contexts and individual case studies as diverse as colonial architecture, nineteenth-century literary histories, and postmodern writing and art.

Why we read literature and why we should read literature are age-old questions that have, in recent years, gained unprecedented scope and intensity, against the backdrop of what has been perceived as a world-wide crisis in the humanities. While scholars frequently discuss different types of value separately, in this volume values of literature are approached in the plural: we argue that the ethical, aesthetic, cognitive, affective, social, historical, and existential values of literature should be explored in connection with each other. The three parts of the book explore the relationship between ethics and aesthetics; the cognitive, affective, and social values of literature; and the construction and questioning of literary values in society. Throughout the book, we discuss the different things literature can do - ranging from affirmation of social dogmas to its capacities for self-questioning and challenging of moral certainties - through the dynamic interplay of its ethical and aesthetic, cognitive and affective aspects. Literature not only reflects and draws on the values of the historical world from which it stems; it also actively addresses, challenges, and transforms those values and explores new ways to understand value. Through these complementary processes, literature engages in its own distinctively literary forms of value inquiry.

Excerpt from New Literary Values: Studies in Modern Literature This is not to say that no criticism is good which does not take the form of philosophical investiga tion, but that such investigation must precede any further discussion. Criticism must assume a stable standard of values and constant points of reference, and the discovery of these must be made by each critic for himself. Otherwise there cannot even be an intelligent handling of vocabulary. What can the critic do with such words as aesthetic, form, ideal, significant, unless he has satisfied himself about their meaning by his own investigations? How often do we see quite un defined terms flung about loosely in critical writing which passes for profound! Definition of terms is no simple matter it is not the beginning of a thought-process but the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Friends and colleagues honor the 30-year career of Appalachian-born literature scholar White with 15 essays. Their goal is to call attention to ideas or connections that demand a reappraisal of conventional attitudes or ingrained responses. Spanning from the middle 19th century to the present, they consider such well known authors as Hawthorne, Cather, and Welty but also some less known ones such as Wallace Stegner, Dunstan Thomas, and neglected Civil War poets. Finding My Way written by Duncan Brown and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-01 with Social Science categories.

This book reflects on South African literature from the perspective of 2020. It emerges from Duncan Brown’s experiences of three decades of working in this field of writing and scholarship. It is a personal intellectual exploration and an engagement with the institutional history of literary studies in South Africa and elsewhere. Finding My Way also attempts to find more creative, engaging and intriguing modes of writing about literature and the humanities universally. It seeks to recover a sense of the imaginative, the literary, and the affective, not only as things to value in the literary texts we read but also as ways of understanding and reading texts, as ways of writing criticism—of registering how books make us feel, as well as how they make us think.
