How Much Do You Believe That What Happens to You Is the Result of Your Own Actions—or Do Circumstances Beyond Your Control Largely Determine Your Fate? Locus of Control (LOC) is a phrase used by psychologists to describe a widely effective way of assessing an individual’s potential for success—personal, social, and financial. LOC measures how much you believe what happens to you is the result of your own actions or, conversely, of forces and circumstances beyond your control. People who accept that they are largely in control of their lives tend to do better than those who feel that fate or external factors rule what they do, especially in novel and difficult situations. This book explains LOC research, until now mainly confined to academic circles, in terms easily understandable to the average person. The author, a clinical psychologist who has spent nearly five decades investigating and writing about LOC, helps the reader to explore his or her own locus of control and what those orientations might mean for how life is lived. He discusses the extensively documented relationship between LOC and academic achievement, personal and social adjustment, health, and financial success. Dr. Nowicki notes that there has been an increasing tendency among Americans to feel as though their lives are slipping out of their control, and he identifies ways to reverse this negative trend. He describes how the Locus of Control is learned and demonstrates ways in which it can be changed to yield higher levels of achievement, success, personal satisfaction, and better interactions with others.

Teaching INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL means teaching learners to become "Internals" to control their own lives more fully and successfully. When individuals become Internals they believe they have the will and the wherewithal to set achievable goals and accomplish them. In other words, they are empowered. INTERNALS are known to: (1) experience higher levels of well-being and engage in healthier behaviors; (2) be healthier and happier and live longer lives; and (3) exhibit superior cognitive functioning and display more motivation to complete tasks, perform well, and innovate. INTERNALS, who believe they control their lives, are also more successful in learning and academic achievement, at work, and in economic endeavors as a whole. They are typically more active, more effective in social and sociological situations, willingly take responsibility, and more likely to resist outside influences that can undermine personal moral behavior. That's why, for all these reasons and more, it pays to TEACH INTERNAL LOCUS OF CONTROL. Because the instruction techniques in this book have been validated in an extensive field evaluation, you can be sure that learning to teach the six-step behavioral strategy will be satisfying and rewarding. As you watch the lives of your learners undergo transformation and enhancement each and every time, you will be amazed at just how successful you and they will be when you. . . . . . Research with the Locus of Control Construct, Volume 3: Extensions and Limitations presents the extensions of use of the locus of control construct into areas far removed from the purview of the construct's originators and limitations of that usage. This book is divided into two parts. Part I describes the large number of investigations that have been conducted in each of three psychological domains—industrial psychology, psychophysiology, and cross-cultural psychology. Part II examines the question of the circumstances under which locus of control is a useful construct. This volume is recommended for psychologists and medical practitioners concerned with the locus of control contract.

In the roughly two decades since Aaron T. Beck published the now classic "Cognitive Therapy of Depression," and Michael J. Mahoney declared the "Cognitive Revolution," much has happened. What was proposed as the "cognitive revolution" has now become the zeitgeist, and Cognitive Therapy (CT) has grown exponentially with each passing year. A treatment model that was once seen as diffe rent, strange, or even alien, is now commonplace. In fact, many people have allied themselves with CT claiming that they have always done CT. Even my psychoanalytic colleagues have claimed that they often use CT. "After all," they say, "Psychoanalysis is a cognitive therapy." Cognitive Therapy (or Cognitive Psychotherapy) has become a kaleidoscope model of treatment, with influences coming from many sources. Some of these contributory streams have been information pro cessing, behavior therapy, Constructivist psychology, and dynamic psychotherapy. Each of these sources have added color, shading, and depth to the CT model. What was originally uni dimensional in terms of the CT focus on depression has become multidimensional as the CT model has been applied to virtually every patient population, treatment setting, and therapy context. CT must now be seen as a general model of psychotherapy that, with modifications, can be applied to the broad range of clinical problems and syndromes. What has tied these various applications of CT together is the emphasis on a strong grounding in cogni tive theory, a commitment to empirical support, and a dedication to broadening the model.
