Residual effectiveness of nine insecticides applied to bark was tested against western, mountain, and Jeffrey pine beetles. Ponderosa and Jeffrey pine trees were treated and logs cut from them 2 to 13 months later, and bioassayed with the three beetles. The insecticides were sprayed at the rate of 1 gal (3.8 l) per 40- or 80-ft2 (3.6 or 7.2 m2) bark surface at varying concentrations. Effectiveness of treatment was based on reduction in length of egg galleries 2 to 3 weeks after initiating bioassay. All chemicals were quite effective for 2 to 13 months, except for malathion and Imidan which were relatively ineffective, depending largely on concentration and application rate. On the basis of equivalent amounts of lindane, the ranking ofeffectiveness ofinsecticides tested was as follows: (a) on western pine beetle: decamethrin> permethrin> lindane> Reldan> Dursban Sumithion> Sevin; (b) on mountain pine beetle: decamethrin> permethrin> lindane> Dursban Reldan> Sevin> Sumithion; (c) on Jeffrey pine beetle: decamethrin> permethrin> lindane> Sevin. The residual effectiveness of lindane was about doubled by adding 2 percent molasses, and high pH of water reduced effectiveness of Sevin. Other application parameters had little effect.

In a 1964-1967 study on the Challenge Experimental Forest, seedfall was evaluated in 2-, 5-, and 10-acre circular clearcuttings. During the 4 years, 10 seed crops, ranging from light to bumper, were produced by ponderosa pine. white fir, Douglas-fir, and incense cedar. Seedfall ranged from 76 to 40,691 sound seed per acre (188 to 100,547/ha) for a single species in a given year. From 89 to 100 percent of each species' seed fell within an area 1 1/2 times the height of the average dominant tree. Overall, seed distribution was highly variable.

In this annotated bibliography, an attempt has been made to summarise the international research experience up to date covering various aspects of environmental degradation, by pesticides and organic chemicals and its control. Broadly, it enlists adsorption-desorption behaviour of soils; microbial activity, degradation and bio-remedition; soil, water and atmospheric pollution; agricultural activity; crop rotation; climate run off and water pollution; disease, pest control and plant protection measures.

The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) is the most destructive insect that attacks lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.), a species valued for multiple uses throughtout North America. The effective residual life of carbaryl, applied as a 2 percent suspension of Sevimol to the bark of lodgepole pine to prevent attack by mountain pine beetle, was evaluated near Dillon, Colorado. Trees (9,568) treated in 1982 under operational conditions were used to assess the efficacy of the treatment for one and two beetle flight periods after insecticide application. Estimated mortality of untreated trees was 0.91 percent compared with 0.074 percent for trees treated 16 months earlier with carbaryl. Residues of carbaryl were estimated at 359 ppm 16 months after application. When exposed to intense beetle pressure, bolts from trees treated 13 months earlier suffered fewer attacks and had shorter mean egg gallery length than did bolts from untreated trees; bolts from trees sprayed 3 months earlier suffered no attacks. Apparently a 2 percent suspension of carbaryl applied to the bole of lodgepole pine was effective in protecting lodgepole pine from mountain pine beetle for the flight period 3 months after application and even provided protection for a second flight period 16 months after treatment. I The results suggest that protection cost and I insecticide use could be reduced by 50 percent during a 4-year outbreak.
