Originally published in 1967. The common aim of all logical enquiry is to discover and analyse correctly the forms of valid argument. In this book concise expositions of traditional, Aristotelian logic and of modern systems of propositional and predicative logic show how far that aim has been achieved.

This monograph is a defence of the Fregean take on logic. The author argues that Frege ́s projects, in logic and philosophy of language, are essentially connected and that the formalist shift produced by the work of Peano, Boole and Schroeder and continued by Hilbert and Tarski is completely alien to Frege's approach in the Begriffsschrift. A central thesis of the book is that judgeable contents, i.e. propositions, are the primary bearers of logical properties, which makes logic embedded in our conceptual system. This approach allows coherent and correct definitions of logical constants, logical consequence, and truth and connects their use to the practices of rational agents in science and everyday life.

Propositions written by Robert Stalnaker and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Proposition (Logic) categories.

"A defense of an ontology of propositions and of some logical resources for representing them. It begins with an austere formulation of a theory of propositions in a first-order extensional logic, but then uses the commitments of this theory to justify an enrichment to modal logic - the logic of necessity and possibility - as an appropriate framework for regimented languages that are constructed to represent any of our scientific and philosophical commitments. Both the proof-theory and the model theory of a first-order quantified modal logic are developed in detail, and it is argued that these formal resources help to sharpen questions about ontology and predication. The clarification of predication helps to provide a motivation for extending our ontological commitment to properties and relations that are expressed by predicates, and for extending the logic to a higher-order modal logic that provides a conception of metaphysical modality that allows for the contingent existence, not only of persons and physical objects, but also of properties, relations and propositions. Even though both the specific ontological commitments defended (to propositions, properties and relations) and the logical resources that are used to defend them (modal and higher-order logic) were famously rejected by W. V. Quine, the book adopts a self-consciously neo-Quinean methodology, and argues that the theory that is developed helps to motivate and clarify Quine's naturalistic metaphysical picture"--

Originally published in 1988. This text gives a lucid account of the most distinctive and influential responses by twentieth century philosophers to the problem of the unity of the proposition. The problem first became central to twentieth-century philosophy as a result of the depsychoiogising of logic brought about by Bradley and Frege who, responding to the ’Psychologism’ of Mill and Hume, drew a sharp distinction between the province of psychology and the province of logic. This author argues that while Russell, Ryle and Davidson, each in different ways, attempted a theoretical solution, Frege and Wittgenstein (both in the Tractatus and the Investigations) rightly maintained that no theoretical solution is possible. It is this which explains the importance Wittgenstein attached in his later work to the idea of agreement in judgments. The two final chapters illustrate the way in which a response to the problem affects the way in which we think about the nature of the mind. They contain a discussion of Strawson’s concept of a person and provide a striking critique of the philosophical claims made by devotees of artificial intelligence, in particular those made by Daniel Dennett.

From the PREFACE. THE following pages have grown out of an attempt to reach, point by point, some solution of various questions in Logic, which, both in learning and in teaching, I have felt to be special sources of difficulty. The continued use of Jevons's Elementary Lessons in Logic with beginners, has particularly contributed to keep these problems before my mind; for Jevons's little book, though full of interest and suggestion, is not free from inconsistencies and confusions in connection with the questions referred to. Having reached apparent solutions of some difficulties, and finding that these solutions are, as it seems to me, consistent among themselves, and in harmony with a certain general view of Logic which I take, I am desirous to submit what I have written to the test of publication. I at first intended to call this collection of chapters "Notes"; but as objections to this name, which I could not gainsay, were put before me, I have adopted the present title; meaning to convey by it, not that the following pages are intended for beginners, but that they present what is necessary for indicating the outlines of the Science of Logic as I conceive it. What I most strongly feel the need of, and what I should have preferred to attempt to write, is an elementary handbook, corresponding in some respects to Jevons's; but I think that certain divergences of my view from current views require an amount of explanation and justification which would be out of place in a book intended for beginners. The very large number of references introduced is due to two causes. First, to the wish to confirm my opinion by that of accepted authorities when the two seem to accord; and secondly, to the desire to indicate as precisely as possible, in cases of difference, the doctrines which I am combating....
