In computing science design plays an eminently important role. By now, it is quite clear that the issue of proper design of programs within a formal calculus is one of the most interesting and most difficult parts of computing science. Many demanding problems have to be envisaged here such as notations, rules and calculi, and the study of semantic models. We are 'far away from comprehensive and widely accepted solutions in these areas. Discussions at the summer school have clearly shown that people have quite different perspectives and priorities with respect to these three main areas. There is a general agreement that notation is very important. Here, notation is not so much used in the sense of "syntactic sugar", but rather in the sense of abstract syntax, in the sense of language constructs. Proper notation can significantly improve our understanding of the nature of the objects that we are dealing with and simplify the formal manipulation of these objects. However, influenced by educational background, habits, and schools of thought there are quite different tastes with respect to notation. The papers in these proceedings show very clearly how different those notations can be even when talking about quite similar objects.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the second International Workshop on the Semantics, Applications, and Implementation of Program Generation (SAIG 2001)held on 6 September, 2001, in Florence, Italy. SAIG 2001 was held as an ACM SIGPLAN workshop co-located with the International Conference on Principles, Logics, and Implementations of High-level Programming Languages (PLI). As the commercial production of software systems moves toward being a traditional industry, automation will necessarily play a more substantial role in this industry, just as it plays a key role in the production of traditional commodities. SAIG aims at promoting the development and the application of foundational techniques for supporting automatic program generation. A key goal of SAIG is to provide a unique forum for both theoreticians and practitioners to present their results and ideas to an audience from a diverse background. The papers cover a broad spectrum of subjects, from foundational and theoretical topics to programs and systems issues and to applications, comprising formal methods, software and systems modeling, semantics, laws of programming, specification and verification, as well as logics. He Jifeng is known for his seminal work in the theories of programming and formal methods for software engineering. He is particularly associated with Unifying Theories of Programming (UTP) , the theory of data refinement and the laws of programming, and the rCOS formal method for object and component system construction. His book on UTP with Tony Hoare has been widely read and followed by a large number of researchers, and it has been used in many postgraduate courses. He was a senior researcher at Oxford during 1984-1998, and then a senior research fellow at the United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) in Macau during 1998-2005. He has been a professor and currently the Dean of the Institute of Software Engineering at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China. In 2005, He Jifeng was elected as an academician to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of York. He won a number of prestigious science and technology awards, including a 2nd prize of Natural Science Award from the State Council of China, a 1st prize of Natural Science Award from the Ministry of Education of China, a 1st prize of Technology Innovation from the Ministry of Electronic Industry, and a number awards from Shanghai government.
