Building theories of organizations is challenging: theories are partial and "folk" categories are fuzzy. The commonly used tools--first-order logic and its foundational set theory--are ill-suited for handling these complications. Here, three leading authorities rethink organization theory. Logics of Organization Theory sets forth and applies a new language for theory building based on a nonmonotonic logic and fuzzy set theory. In doing so, not only does it mark a major advance in organizational theory, but it also draws lessons for theory building elsewhere in the social sciences. Organizational research typically analyzes organizations in categories such as "bank," "hospital," or "university." These categories have been treated as crisp analytical constructs designed by researchers. But sociologists increasingly view categories as constructed by audiences. This book builds on cognitive psychology and anthropology to develop an audience-based theory of organizational categories. It applies this framework and the new language of theory building to organizational ecology. It reconstructs and integrates four central theory fragments, and in so doing reveals unexpected connections and new insights.

Innovative and challenging. The Logic of Organizations explores organizational theory by focusing on the genesis of organizations and the conditions for their continued existence. Abrahamsson draws upon the classic theories of Marx, Weber, and Michels, as well as more contemporary developments in organizational theory, to present his unique theory - that organizations are deliberately designed social structures established by individuals, groups, or classes in order to implement specific goals. To effectively support his argument, the author concentrates on three critical areas of organizations: how to make organizations more efficient and more representative of the interests and objectives of their founders, and how to relieve the problems of bureaucracy, namely administrative groups working toward their own goals and objectives rather than those of the organization.

This study explores a missing link in organizational theory--organizational logics. Organizational logics are expected to play an intermediary role between personal logics and institutional logics. Additionally, organizational logics likely generate an organization's structure and functions. A formal conceptual definition of organizational logics is described in conjunction with a conceptual framework for a tripartite pattern of inquiry. The pattern of inquiry uses pragmatism, dialectics, and sensemaking as lenses to explain "what works", "what is needed", and "what is known" regarding organizational logics. The purpose of this study is to explore organizational logics in several ways. First, as a developing theoretical approach, organizational logics theory needs a research agenda beginning with explanatory case studies. Second, I will broaden the scope of the theory by introducing elements of complexity theory, pragmatism, dialectics, and sensemaking. Third, the multilevel linking of logics is familiar territory in other fields such as biology, computer science, and complexity, but a new direction for logics research organization theory. The study uses a qualitative research method with an in-depth case study. The research site is a typical nonprofit organization that employs a soccer-based medium to serve at-risk children. The research methods include interviews with the organization's members, archival research, and naturalistic observation. The tripartite pattern of inquiry is overlaid on these methods to answer my research questions: what are organizational logics? Are they distinguishable from, yet interrelated with personal logics and institutional logics? How are organizational logics interrelated? How do those relationships change over time? The answers to these questions explain how organizations emerge from linkages of organizational logics. The research findings conceptualize organizational logics as distinguishable from, yet interrelated with, personal logics and institutional logics. Second, the findings associated with dynamics between logics explained the dialectic interplay between organizational logics and how that interaction shapes organizations in practice. Third, the findings regarding changes over time illustrated how organizational logics and their interactions with each other enable an organization to change over time in response to varying environmental constraints. However, the transformation by which organization logics change their recognizable, actionable, and normative characteristics in response to the dialectic process remains unexplained. The answers to these three research objectives also answered my research question as the findings demonstrated that organizational logics emerge, interact, and change in organizations over time.

The Poetic Logic of Administration is an investigation of the most important organizational forms of our time, theoretically as well as practically. Central to the presentation are four main trends: the rational bureaucracy, the human network, the harmonious system and the strong culture. The book provides a new and challenging picture of these organizational forms. Difficult to capture in common logical terms, they appear to follow a certain pattern: a 'poetic logic'. They are, for example, enacted as various literary dramas: comedy, tragedy etc. They are also marked by different conceptions of the world - such as the metaphorical and the ironic - and by different explanatory ideals. Kaj Skoldberg's book contains a rhetorical analysis of the styles of modern administration and the changes they have undergone. This is a groundbreaking work, offering new interpretations and critical re-evaluations of the individual approaches to organization, including their 'gurus' and current importance, within the framework of a highly-original, overarching analysis. No previous book has tried to capture the major forms of organizing, and their dynamics, in terms of their rhetorical master tropes, main narrative genres, and explanatory ideals, and also uses this as an interpretive scheme for understanding individual organizational theories and practices within those main approaches. Examples are given from both the private and the public sectors and various forms of efficiency and effectiveness are also discussed.
