Remembering Heraclitus written by Richard G. Geldard and has been published by Richard Geldard this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Philosophy categories.

Fragments of Heraclitus: "To be wise is one thing: to know the thought that directs all things through all things." "We should not act like the children of our parents." This bright, deep, meditative jewel-like study brings Heraclitus to life in a new way, and shows him to be one of the principal sources of Western mystical thinking. From Geldard's point of view, the study of Heraclitus is not just an academic matter but, on the contrary, presents us with very real existential and phenomenological challenges. The book includes new translations of all the essential fragments. Geldard, through his exploration of Heraclitus, shows us, "The more that human beings openly and humbly seek higher knowledge, the more they develop the power to perceive it, until finally they penetrate to the hidden universal order. The result of this penetration is knowledge of the Logos, that 'which directs all things through all things.' The acquisition of this knowledge is not an event; it is a stance in the world. It is Being in its fullness."

Apologetic Discourse And The Scribal Tradition written by Wayne Campbell Kannaday and has been published by Society of Biblical Lit this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Religion categories.

Annotation It is commonly acknowledged that the "original" manuscripts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John did not survive the exigencies of history. What modern readers refer to as the canonical Gospels are in fact compositions reconstructed from copies transmitted by usually anonymous scribes. Apologetic Discourse and the Scribal Tradition examines an important facet of the fascinating but seldom-reported story of the interests that shaped the formation of the text of the New Testament. With an informed awareness of the dynamic discourse between pagan critics and early defenders of early Christianity, and careful scrutiny of more than one hundred variant readings located in the literary tradition of the New Testament text, the author drafts a compelling case that some scribes occasionally modified the text of the Gospels under the influence of apologetic interests.

Postmodern Anarchism written by Lewis Call and has been published by Lexington Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with History categories.

Delving into the anarchist writings of Nietzsche, Foucault, and Baudrillard, and exploring the cyberpunk fiction of William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, theorist Lewis Call examines the new philosophical current where anarchism meets postmodernism. This theoretical stream moves beyond anarchism's conventional attacks on capital and the state to criticize those forms of rationality, consciousness, and language that implicitly underwrite all economic and political power. Call argues that postmodernism's timely influence updates anarchism, making it relevant to the political culture of the new millennium.

Pagan Rome And The Early Christians written by Stephen Benko and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986-07-22 with History categories.

"In the early Roman empire, Christians were seen by pagans as overthrowers of ancient gods and destroyers of the prevailing social order. Allegations that Christians recognized each other by secret marks, met at night and made love to one another indiscriminately, worshipped the head of an ass and the genitals of their high priests, and ate children were widely believed. In examining these charges and the Christian response to them, Benko has provided a persuasively argued and refreshing, if controversial, perspective on the confrontation of the pagan and early Christian worlds."[book cover].

The Letter And The Spirit written by Robert M. Grant and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-30 with Religion categories.

Many aspects of the thought of the Fathers are strange to us, and as a result we tend to value their writings for their spiritual rather than their intellectual content. In particular, we find it difficult to follow them in their use of allegorical methods of biblical interpretation. Dr. Grant is concerned with understanding these methods, with special reference to those employed by Origen. For this purpose, he first traces the development of Greek theories of the interpretation of poetry and then examines the treatment of the Old Testament found in Hellenistic and other Jewish writers and in the New Testament. This is followed by an account of Patristic methods of exegesis, culminating in what he describes as the climax of allegorization in the writings of Clement of Alexandria and, even more significantly, of Origen. In conclusion, Dr. Grant suggests some parallels between these ancient methods of interpretation and certain modern developments. The result is a fascinating study of the exegesis of sacred writings, ranging from Xenophanes to Bultmann and from Pythagoras to Dibelius. Though it is not specifically a theological treatise, the book is dealing all the time with a basically theological question, the meaning of inspiration, and Dr. Grant's erudition over a wide field of scholarship will throw new light on his subject and will help toward a truer evaluation of the work of the Fathers.

Edwin Hatch provided a colourful portrait of the religious world to which Justin Martyr belonged: The main subject-matter of ... literary education [amongst the pagans] was the poets. ... They were read as we read the Bible. They were committed to memory. The minds of men were saturated with them. A quotation from Homer or from a tragic poet was apposite on all occasions and in every kind of society (The Influence of Greek Ideas on Christianity, 1957). So when some of these pagans converted to Christianity in Justin's day, is it reasonable to assume that they simply
